Though different colleges and different majors require different things, I think it's generally safe to display as many different things as possible. Use different mediums, different styles, so on and so forth. This shows that you have a general grasp of lots of different things. ^_^ That's what I tried to do, and it seemed to work well!

 Wha-?

As for what to put in a portfolio, yep listen to Tsuki. And look up the specific guidelines, of course, to see if they have a specific number, format, etc. of pieces they want. Oh, and only put in your best. It comes off much better to have fewer really awesome pieces than 20 with half of them being so-so. Unless they ask for 20 pieces n' you have no choice. Everyone has a different opinion on this, but making sure you have a few really great pieces in the beginning to catch the person's attention is good and another one of your best near the end, since people tend to remember the last thing they see. But other people will argue it doesn't matter where you put the awesome pieces. *shrug* You decide. :)

And as far as content goes, it certainly depends on the college and what area you're thinking of going into, but some places really look down on things such as anime. So having at least some life drawing, figure study, still life, etc. to let them know you have the basic skills besides cartoons can make or break you.

My friend plans to go to Ringling in FL, but I'm still not sure because I have no clue what I plan to major in or do for a living. Got junior and senior year to think about it, though.

thats very intresting to want to learn design WildFire. its alittle more than just art though, but it is an excellent choice for a career. my father was a chief industrial engineer and I always considered the designs he made as art. put your mind into alot of math to go with the art though.

as for sleep...I hate to say it....what is sleep? I went through just a local JC here in Jersey but it was at the time the top 2 year school for photography in the nation. I went and worked full time and still pulled a 3.95 gpa for an old head banging leather wearin' northeast city kid. you all can do it. now Im trying to make this comic fly (4hr/day), and manage a companies production (10-12hr/day). along with regular life and kids.....whats sleep? it gets less as you get older.

but youll all do fine....

Ah, very exciting topic. X3

I'm also an art student. I've just been accepted to Fashion Institute of Technology in NY for Graphic/Communication designs. I want to make websites for a living, basically, and start a company that does so.

Let me tell you, I'm lucky as anything to get in. All my applications were late and I did my home tests literally the night before. My number one peice of advice:

DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!

I can't stress this enough. X__x

Also, in making a portfolio, they like variety, mixed mediums, and experimental things as well as progression. I brought in my first painting from my sophmore year of high school along side one I did that week to show the improvment I had made in techinique.

So, yay for art colleges!

What you include really depends on where you want to go and for what. Figure studies are always good, as well as still lifes and landscapes. Feature as many different mediums, subject matter, and styles as you can to showcase the range of things you can do. It depends on the school, but anime can really be looked down upon. So if you include any, be sure to have some good figure studies or landscapes to balance it out. Include only your best work.

Most importantly, schools have specific requirements for what exactly they want included from size to format to a very strict outline of what kinds of things they want included. Check the website of the schools you're interested in.

As for age, as soon as you graduate high school is the usual time. Same as going to college. But to start putting your portfolio together, that depends on when you think you've created your best work. If something you did two years ago is awesome and still reflects your skill or creativity level, include it. Basically as long as you're creating art you're preparing. Actually putting the portfolio together and applying would be in your senior year of high school.
