To color in a drawing, you'll generally need something (anything) with layers capability.

That rules out MS Paint almost instantly. The four most well-known alternatives are:

- Adobe Photoshop
- Jasc Paintshop Pro
- GIMP
- (various oekaki)

photoshop. Any photoshop will work. Also you can try gimp. like strata said. Those are the best. Try to get photoshop CS, that's a long journey of money to go.

Nope, I haven't heard of it. As for which is the "best" software... A lot of people actually use both Photoshop and Paintshop Pro, because you can get different effects out of the two. I'd say it's slightly easier to use PSP, but I don't have enough experience with Photoshop to fully evaluate it.

But like Strata said, anything with layers you can use. Smile

Well, if that supports layering, and all you want to do is colouring and not photo manipulation or anything, then you could probably stick with that.

4 mainstream ones...

Photoshop, Adobe, 400-500 bucks, mostly for photo enhancing but can be and most of the time, used to create CG picture, one of the most complicated, most popular program on the market *Supports ingenious system called layers

Painter, Corel, 200-300 bucks, purely for creation, works just like real paintbrush and pencils, most real artists (Picasso clones) use it to pre-outline their real paintings before moving on to the actual canvas, and the colours come in names of "Deep Cadmium yellow" instead of yellow #3860342

Paintshop pro, Corel, 100 bucks, almost exclusive to photo enhancing, but can be used to colour new pictures, most of the times referred to as "poor man's photoshop"

Photoshop Element, Adobe, 100 bucks, Watered-down version of Photoshop, I ain't quite sure what this one does.

Anyway, I recommend getting Painter and Paintshop in a bundle, (as they are from the same company) with that, you can do pretty much anything, and i think it is actually cheaper than buying the full fledged photoshop

*Note, "Educational" versions of these softwares are available to art students at about 40% of the price, but you gotta go a lot of complicated steps.
