I bought a pack of chalk pastels and they're really getting on my nerves. You have to rub really hard to get them to blend together, and you can see the line where you run the pastel on the paper. Maybe its because I got it from Wal-Mart <_< ... Can anybody suggest a good brand? Not too expensive, ofcourse.
I would also like to know if you prefer chalk or oil pastels? The oil ones are the crayon looking ones, right? I myself prefer the chalk pastel. I tried the oil ones and they didn't agree with me . . . . ... oh well.
Oh, um, this IS the right board for this topic, right? I wasn't sure where to post it....

I can't give you advice on a good brand, where I'm living it's not the same. But in general, me too I prefer chalk. Anyway, much of the time, I put the two on my drawing to put effects. And for your chalk pastels : I had a pack in the past, and I didn't have this problem. You should make confidence to others shop than wal-mart for this one !! lol price don't mean quality... but anyway, my mother is working in a shop with all school things. I got Pentel brand. What do you have ?

The brand is Studio Basics. lol, yeah, that's the last time I get art supplies from Wal-Mart. They were pretty cheap, which is the reason I got them. I didn't have much money at the time, so I just got what was in my 'budget'. Next time, i think i'll just wait till i have more money....

I dunno, I dabble in the art store alot, and the most recommended brand is Rembrandt, but each stick is something like 2.59, and it's a professional brand...

And there is Schminke, which is soft as a puppy and very colorful but each stick is about 4 dollars a stick..... Sad Sad Sad

If you want something harder and cheaper (this one is hard for a reason) you can get Prismacolor Nupastels, aka NooBpastels, this is usually used by professional artists to outline their pastel drawings or make fine adjustment, but some people use it to draw an entire picture, and the price range is 70 cents ~90 cents per stick, this is recommended choice because most art stores sell each sticks indivudally as well as sets, so if you run out of one color, you can restock easily.

it comes in 96 colors.

Anything below that is crap, really.

Thanks! I was at Michaels just yesterday and was lookin' at the Prismacolor stuff, and it WAS pretty expensive. I'm lookin' for a brand that I used in art class last year, but i can't remember the brand name. Those were nice and I liked using them. I was able to do a self portrait in green and it was the bestest in the class!... not that i'm bragging or anything. *cough cough*
Anyway, I like to draw anime but i'm slipping away from that type of art. Its not turning out to be my thing, and i'm changing to catoonist type (the kind you see in newspaper) and realistic things. I like to draw realistic faces. So far, i've drawn a Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, and Anakin/Darth Vader realistic pics. Hopefully, i'll improve in my next art class.

A class at school. lol, yeah, I was pretty surprised at the good art supplies. But alot of the other students (the ones who would rather have been somewhere else) messed them up Grr! They used the patels on their binders or banged the rulers on the table or messed the scissors up and I just stared at them outta the corner of my eyes, saying nothing but I was sooo angry. Hello people, these things cost a lot of money! Use them for the actual assignment, for God's sake.... lol, I got pretty mad when they abused the materials. I think I was one of the few students in my class who were serious about the art. My teahcer was VERY serious about it (but she was fun) and politly corrected me when I pronounced pastels wrong. And she taught us that it is never "purple", but "violet" in art. I hope I get her again this year.

Me too my class was the same... it was 2 years ago.. I had luck this year, I was in a art class. The teacher trust us and we could use everything and the material always stayed ok... when it was only our class that use it.. lol. I finally found sumone else like me who dislike people who don't cares about things that cost money.. anyway. next year, I'll be back in a bad class.. Grr! I hope for you that you will remember the brand you had in your art class!! ;)

-god.. I can't stop to look at your avatar... I love it !! lol..

ProArt is decent for practice until you get good at them. $10 for a pack of 24. Cool Get good paper, too, that'll contribute to your problem with blending and color.

Of course, good materials never hurt. Lord knows I have enough boxes of prismacolor pencils sitting around, but until you get a good grasp of the techniques, you'll just blow through $1 a piece sticks and be wasting money. Same goes for quality paint, markers, etc.

So get the nicest ones you can afford, but lower end ones won't hurt to practice with.

Yeah, i've decided to start off with sorta cheap materials, and when i'm much more better at art and I know i'm making it worthwhile, i'll get the more expensive brands. I also have to get used to the different types of materials, like Woodless color pencils. I have no idea what the difference is... sure, theres no wood, but what difference does it make? Is it better quality or something...?
And yes, my teacher told us never "purple", always "violet". Wierd, I know, but i've gotten so used to it the word purple irritates me....
lol, thanks Vallen. I LOVE my avatar also! Beast Boy is the cutest Teen Titan, my fav character.... um, you WERE talking about my avatar, right? Or someone elses? Sorry, i get confused alot....

I don't remember the other thing I was talking about.. lol but you know for that story about purple or violet : in french too it's the same thing... we have a translation for the two words and in french also we are suppose to say violet, but the language in quebec is not very good according to France, so we always use purple... yeah long story for nothing... I never listen teen titans... at least I know it. I say that cuz normally people get only french chanels and the series are bad in french. I should try to watch it. ^_^
