Power ballads can either be extremely sappy and borderline annoying or they can be as hardcore and rocking as any rock song. So in this thread, name you favorite power ballads. And for a twist, also put down what you think are the sappiest and lamest power ballad lyrics ever.

I'll start. Smile

Best Ballads:

Home Sweet Home-Motley Crue
Love Bites-Def Leppard
18 and Life-Skid Row
Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeplin
When its Love-Van Halen
Every Rose Has its Thorn-Poison
Here I Go Again-Whitesnake
Bringin' on the Heartache-Deff Leppard
November Rain-Guns N' Roses
Mama I'm Coming Home-Ozzy Osbourne
Without You-Motley Crue
Sweet Child 'O Mine-Guns N' Roses

Sappiest lyrics:

She's got eyes of the bluest skies and if they thought of rain, I'd hate to look into those eyes and see an ounce of pain. Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place where as a child I'd hide and pray for the thunder and the rain to quietly pass me by...-Sweet Child O' Mine

Kid Rock: Only God Knows Why
Lynard Skynard: Free Bird
Chili Peppers: Under The Bridge
Aerosmith: Crazy

Sappiest?
"every rose has it's thorns" some song by some band some people call Poison

Laughing I'd argue with that if it weren't true. There's worse, though. By Poison even. Every Rose has some decent verses in it for being a power ballad.

"You heal up my wounds
I tasted your tears
You spilled out your heart
So I let out my fears

But one fear that I kept to myself
Was how I prayed that youd love no one else
Like youre saying you love me

Life goes on, while you're miles away, and I need you" - Life Goes On, Poison

I Won't Forget You is pretty god awful too.

Aaaaanyway, best power ballads:

"Sister Christian" - Night Ranger
"House Of Pain" - Faster Pussycat
"Something To Believe In" - Poison (stfu, this one is good Grr! )
"Love Bites" - Def Leppard
"Angel" - Aerosmith
"Home Sweet Home" - Motley Crue
"Don't Close Your Eyes" - KIX
"If I Close My Eyes Forever" - Ozzy and Lita Ford
"Ballad of Jayne" - LA Guns
"Nobody's Fool" - Cinderella
"Mama I'm Comin' Home" - Ozzy
"Heartbreak Station" - Cinderella
"Don't Cry" - Gn'R
"I Remember You" - Skid Row
"18 And Life" - Skid Row
"The Angel Song" - Great White
"Wild Angels" - Pretty Boy Floyd
"One Step From Paradise" - Danger Danger
"Don't Walk Away" - Danger Danger
"Don't You Ever Leave Me" - Hanoi Rocks
"Million Miles Away" - Hanoi Rocks
"In My Darkest Moment" - Hanoi Rocks
"I Know" - Placebo (it's like a power ballad...kinda...without the epic guitars)
"I Wanna Be With You" - Pretty Boy Floyd
"Wasted Time" - Skid Row
"I Hate Kissing You Goodbye" - TUFF
"Miles Away" - Winger

Cheesiest: Hell, they all win. Anything by Steelheart, though. Beyond cheesy.

Ah, the decade of monster ballads...

Sorry for being a tool, but can you tell me what Ballads are? I sort of have a clue, but not really.

A ballad is basically any slow song (usually tells some kind of story, but that definition has been stretched a bit), and a power ballad is a slow song that's very...epic. Big guitars, lots of drums/bass, big vocals...

You're right! Surprised I can't believe I forgot that one. It plays on the Power Ballad station on YIM all the time too.

On a different note, I decided that Bon Jovi is responsible for some of the cheesiest lyrics to ever come into existance. Come on, do I even need to like put down the lyrics to Bed of Roses? So damn sappy.

Nope. They're right up there with Steelheart. The one thing I hate about power ballads is they promote the image of "they were popular 'cause they sang to the girls". There was a radio commercial a year or two ago about an all hair band weekend on the 80s station, and it went along the lines of "Guys liked them 'cause they rocked! Girls loved them for those great power ballads. Tune in to blah blah blah..." Grr! It's true, one would expect a song like "Don't Cry" to be loved by girls, but there are just as many that dudes like (18 and Life, Home Sweet Home, Don't Close Your Eyes, etc.), and like Tom from Aerosmith said he was really surprised when all these big biker dudes came up to him and said how much they love "Angel". Laughing

But Bon Jovi were popular 'cause they had the girls. Pretty boy Jon and cheesy songs. A handful of decent singles, and the rest of it is filler. Def Leppard is right up there too, but at least their songs were a lot less stupid than Bon Jovi.

"All The Young Dudes" - David Bowie

Saying that hair metal bands were popular only because they sang power ballads to girls promotes like a boyband image on them. There are some ballads that do appeal to guys too. I mean, Home Sweet Home doesn't seem romantic and yet guys and women love it because its just raw and memorable (even Mick Mars claimed that it was the only real hit out of Theater of Pain.)

I remember seeing that interview. Laughing It does come as a surprise that something that really is so sensitive and borderline sappy can also be rockin' and powerful but I guess thats why they're called power ballads.

-Open Arms, Journey (This ended up winning VH1's Top 25 Power Ballads. I'm a little surprised that this won but I suppose it won because it was one of the first power ballads and it was done right. Its been covered too many times for my liking but the original really does kick some level of ass. I'm even more surprised that out of all the songs that Aerosmith put out, one of their only cover songs made it onto that countdown. There are so many better done ballads done by them but I guess its what the public wanted.)

Those are all child's play, when compared to The 'D's Super Smash Ultra Mega Hit: f**k Her Gently. When you want the mood set right, skipping the sappy crap women are known for subjecting us men to, POP this Mega Hit in and watch as she becomes putty in your hands....and with that very putty.....

you can forever f**k her, for always....

.....and a day
