No, really. Why does it seem like no love is lost for this guy in these forums? I don't sway one way or the other, but there has got to be reasons for hating on one of the most accomplished actors of our time... _________________

I don't particularly hate him the way I do others, but I don't like him at all. His personality grates on me, he's an arrogant prick in interviews, and he's not that fabulous to watch. After Risky Business, that's it for me. I was forced to watch Interview With The Vampire, mediocre. If I ever hear about Jerry Maguire again, it'll be too soon. And do I really even need to mention Last Samurai?
There are far worse actors, but for all he's been in, not much of it is that interesting.
Rain Man was good, but not for his performance. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I loved the Last Samurai. You are aware that Tome Cruise was not the last samurai, right? The Last Samurai is plural, referring to the last of a dying breed of warriars, and an end to an ancient way of life, not a white guy who learned karate. _________________

Yes. I'm aware that I was referring to the movie as a whole. You give me too little credit. ;)
I just don't like him. It's only partially due to his acting, the rest is just...x factor unlikeability. Like the people you hate being around because they just annoy you. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Everyone is talking about Tom Cruise lately and apparently there's some kind of controversy around him. What is the big deal? Like what did he say to get so many people pissed at him and talking about him? I know he believes in aliens but a lot of people do so there's no reason to get worked up over that. Is there something about him that I missed? _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

He said there's no such thing as mental imbalances and that all these drugs aren't necessary. Which on some level is true, but to say there's no use for them is absurd, and that's what pissed people off. Especially when he made a big deal of "I'm familiar with the history of psychology, blah blah blah". Basically it led to a lot of old guys on tv saying "You don't know anything about the subject, stfu Mr. Cruise, and go back to acting instead of telling people they don't need medication and that there's nothing wrong with them".
I'm sure he didn't mean for it to sound the way it did, but surprise surprise... _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Well it is a free country so he has the right to say that. Does that mean he's right? Hell no. I think thats a load of bullcrap.
He's just getting too cocky for his own good. Because he is one of the top actors of our time, he is probably believing that he can get away with whatever he wants and get full support from his fans. _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

Oh my gosh you're all being silly Tom Cruise is an amazing actor and a lovely person. I thought he was brilliant in War of the Worlds and so what if he said what he said; it's a free country and people have freedom of speech. There's nothing wrong with what he said because it was HIS opinion. I don't particularly agree with what he said, but then again I don't agree with what a lot of my friends say and I still like them.... |

He's a lovely person? Says who? Do you know him? Your friends are your friends, you know them personally, how well do you know Mr. Cruise? Someone saying he's a bad person is no less valid than you saying he's a good one. A public image is not a personality. No, no one knows what he's truly like, save for a handful of people, but do you have to know someone intimately to like or dislike them? You make a decision based on the information you have, and based on what we have, a lot of us don't like him. That's also our personal opinions, and whether you agree or not, we have just as much right as Mr. Cruise. ;)
Since when do we have to like someone just because they have the freedom to say what they say? If a big celebrity came out and said something racist, should they not be judged for it just because they have the freedom to say it? I think not. Him saying there's no need for medication for mental illness is no different in that regard. It was just as ridiculous and uncalled for as "I don't really like black people" would be.
(note: the same when it comes to not liking someone for what they said even though they have a right to say it, not that racial discrimination is equally as bad as saying there's no such thing as a mental imbalance...just to keep that clear) _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. I was only saying he's a lovely person based on the interviews and stuff I've seen. Of course if I met him he could turn out to be a complete jerkhead. And I didn't say that you have to like someone because they have freedom of speech, what I meant was that its HIS opinion and that everyone has different opinions.
Also, just to keep this clear, I do NOT agree with him and I think that what he said was wrong and rather out of order. |

Sure it was his opinion, it's not his opinion that's the problem. It's the irresponsible way he handled it. He knows very well the influence he has over some people, uses it to promote his movies or whatever he's trying to sell at the moment, and to say such a thing is stupid and preachy. Nevermind the arrogance.
At least these reasons are better than "because he's ugly". _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
