I think doing wallpapers should be ok as long as we give credit to everyoine we used stuff off of. And what if someone dose a cartoon pic of an actual photo? like I did. If u chec out the pic of muldwer and cully tht i did and also the pic of Linkin park that i did they are made off of real pics that people took. Alsdo look ath the pic of hatebreed i did i used all real pictueres for that. I think that we should be allowed to do that |
Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)
I think its completely off topic.
Okay, so..if you draw a picture of somebody elses completely original character (with permission of course ), does it qualify as a piece of fan art, and therefore become less off-topic?
Or is 'fan art' going to be strictly defined as a piece of art based on a commercial creation? (I'm assuming that 'original' characters based around a well-known anime etc. counts as fan art of that anime, even though the fan-characters don't exist in an official capacity.) |

I see no need for it to be commercial, but it should be popular enough to be recognisable by others. There are plenty of web comics for example that are probebly popular enough to be considered a valid source for fanart.
Either way I should note that origional art will likely be permitted here anyway, even tho its off topic due to popular demand.
Or i'll open a seporate site/section for origional stuff. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

Goin' the fanfiction.net route? Actually, that's a very good idea. Just add a separate index with fewer categories for purely original things. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Cosplay... I'm not quite sure what you mean.
Sprite comics/othercomics I love comics I think they should be allowed!
Drawing other peoples characters. I don't really think thats so good.
This is confusing and those are my opinions... Thanks for listening! |

I think that drawing other people's characters is okay, I'm really complimented when people do that to me!
Wallpapers take a lot of work to do! I've spent hours working on wallpapers before!
Computer enhanced images can be cool looking, they have to be seriously different form the original pictures, not like, putting a mustache on Britney Spears.
(That would be kinda funny though! ^o^)
Colored versions of other's work should be okay if they have permission and give credit.
SO SAYETH THE GREAT ANACONDA!!! YAY!! .... ^^; don' ask...... |

Ok, here is a summery of the opinions expressed in this thread.
This will basically become the official site rules.
I would like to note here that ANYTHING can be considered art. Looking in my universities art gallery display recently, apparently road kill is art *shrugs*. What matters is Is it appropriate for this site. That is mostly what this thread was created to decide.
Pictures containing other artwork (usually official) such as most wallpapers
This was one of the most controversial questions.
The majority of people said no to this, however some wallpaper makers were a definite yes.
Somebody suggested a separate category; I may do something like that.
In the mean time, there are better places to post such work like Anime Wallpapers.com or
Aniverse's wallpaper section (Im sure there are good non-anime wallpaper sites, but these are what I know)
Some people argued that these are just thrown together, and Im sure some crap ones are. But the good ones take a lot of time and effort to make.
CGing somebodys line art (with permission & credit) (official? other fanart?)
Most said yes with permission and credit. No permission necessary for official art, but still credit.
Re-drawing an existing picture (official? other fanart?)
Mixed. Many did not like this, tho many also thought ok with credit.
I will rule it is allowed with permission (for other fanart) and credit.
Though you shouldnt really copy the who pic exactly. Copy the idea or pose, but put your own touches on it. A good example of the put your own touches on it is this http://fanart.ctgameinfo.com/pictures.php?...re&picture=3437 Based on this http://fanart.ctgameinfo.com/contest3/ccs3.jpg
Is cosplay fanart (assuming you made it, not bought)
Many people did not comment on this, but I dont recall seeing anybody say no.
The only problems brought up with this were how do you know they made it which is no different from pics posted and inappropriate for this site which I disagree on as long as the amount of it stays small its fine.
Using other peoples fan made characters (This has caused big problems in other communities)
Most said yes with permission and credit. Written permission is suggested to help prevent problems, or more accurately, deal with problems if they come up.
I also suggest getting each picture (and story for fanfiction) approved by the person who owns the character.
Should completely original artwork be allowed here (It is rather off topic for a fanart site)
All but 2 people said yes. Though I think its off topic, I will allow it due to popular demand unless/until it becomes a problem due to limited resources. At that time, I may split original stuff into another site (seems to have worked for ff.net)
I would suggest posting original art somewhere else better, but Im not sure there is any place better. The other sites people have mentioned all have complaints against them.
Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?
Most said no. I agree.
It may be art, but its not really appropriate for this site.
Photographic backgrounds?
Mixed. I will rule yes because in fanart generally the character(s) are the main focus of the picture, so the background means little. As long as it is just a minor part of the pic its fine. Credit should be given, though there is plenty of stock art out there (photographic clipart) which I dont think really needs credit.
sprite Comics?
Many didnt vote, but assuming official sprites, same as first question.
Assuming original sprites, I dont see any reason to disallow it.
Also, penalties for breaking whatever rule set is defined
Not a lot was discussed about this. There were a few interesting ideas, but nothing more practical than the wall of shame and banning.
quality
A discussion of quality came up in this thread. Quality control is something that is hard to implement. With over 200 pics a day and growing, approving pics isnt really practical. I made the High Quality/Quick sketch thing which will be getting used more in the future as the site grows and I need to trim its size down. This isnt a perfect solution, but should help. The other side of this issue brought up was other sites like elfwood which are far too strict. Its a hard balance, but I may set some minimum quality guidelines or something.
Works in progress may be better posted on the message board under art help.
I have also started enforcing the 5 pic a day limit, I may lower that limit in the near future.
Some other comments
Asil (Miko) brought up the point
One thing i think should be controlled is the number of pics being added that are not owned by the artist even though they give credit. "This is pic is not mine. I did not draw it, but i really like it. Isn't it great?" I'm seeing a lot of these comments and pictures lately, and it really degrades the whole point of this site, for artists to make their own artwork...
That already is not allowed, just has not been enforced very strictly.
On a topic I didnt originally bring up, I am disallowing stuff like texture based background, banners & buttons (except for the ones I requested for this site). This is NOT file dump for you to link your website images off of. I will start enforcing an anti-leech system sometime, those who are leeching images from here will get aninteresting surprise .
Dispute resolution policy:
If somebody has used your character or art as a component of theirs without permission you should first attempt to contact that artist and resolve it with that person. For artists who have hidden email, I can forward such things on your behalf.
If resolution of this type fails, Contact the abuse team.
Joint Pics/Comics/Stories/etc.
If you do a lot of join stuff with another person an account should be created for the pair or group. For just occasional stuff, post It in one account and credit the other artist.
Basically for anything not covered here use the following guideline.
If its based on something else, give credit, and if possible get permission.
Wow, that took forever to read through and write.
I will end with a quote from fallen that everybody should read and think about
It's always been my opinion that one should present their best online. Why wouldn't you? Don't you want people to think you're a good artist? Now, a person can post however many pictures they want on their own personal site, but I really think a public site should be a place for your very best. That's a huge thing I don't like about DA. Kids submit every sketch they ever do, including five minute doodles from their math notes, so there's page after page of junk. If you're proud of that stuff and want to share it, great, it doesn't take that long to set up your own site.

My post is being made rather late into this thread, but I still feel like I should say something about it. I've been a part of each of the topics of discussion here, so I can at least give some form of comment on how to handle them. Although I'm not very active on this website, I've been a fanartist for five years and a cosplayer for four, also a codemonkey (that's techie speak for web developer/coder) for over seven years now (so I know an awful lot about managing space for these sites in an organized manner). And I'm only nineteen. Kya ha ha ^^
Before you read what I have to say, I must agree that only your best work should be displayed in communities like this. I don't even post scribbles online. Sure, I share them, but I wouldn't want possible employers to see my junk work and think that's all I can do. In actuality, I've only posted a meager portion of my work online because of this. For the hundreds and hundreds of pictures I've drawn, you'll find only three on this web site and six of them on my personal portfolio (which I'm updating currently). You shouldn't have to draw well, either, but at least make up for what you lack in originality (I adore Amano, of Final Fantasy fame, for his work, but I personally think he draws out of proportion and abstract).
That being said, here are my comments:
Pictures containing other artwork such as most wallpapers: If you didn't draw it, don't post it. There are servers set up elsewhere for such work (i.e. AnimeWallpapers.com)
CGing somebodys lineart: As for this, I'm kind of neutral. I personally feel that if this person didn't ask you to CG for them, then you should'n have done it in the first place without permission. DEFINITELY not for official artwork because a lot of money goes into licensing series. It's not fair to reuse a picture unless you have express permission to do so.
Re-drawing an existing picture: This is something that p*sses me off. I'm tired of seeing an overwhelming amount of work posted online that, frankly, shows how well (or how poorly) people can copy the work of others. Sure, do it for practice, but if you think you're *that* good at drawing like someone else, then try to use their style in your own, ORIGINAL pictures. Try to be original. All good fans honor the wishes of the people they admire, so don't insult them by copying their work.
Is cosplay fanart?: Most people don't realize just what a huge community Cosplay has created. I think that Cosplay is Cosplay: wearing a costume. Whether it's based off of an Anime/Cartoon/Show/Dorama/whatever doesn't matter. Cosplay should be left to cosplay communities in its own seperate home. It needs space to be properly organized and taken care of (also, reviewed for censorship), and should be critiqued only by those who make it themselves. On a fanart site, people wouldn't be able to understand what was going on, other than, "They're trying to look like ___" On cosplay sites, we actually care about things like craftsmanship, fabric choice, accuracy, etc. We also like to organize things for conventions...so please, just keep it away from here. Also, if you do decide to house it entirely, don't allow things like this: http://ctgameinfo.com/fanart/pictures.php?...e&picture=37358
Using other peoples fanmade characters: With permission, sure. It would be rude to take someone's character who they made with love and then have your way with them.
Should completely original artwork be allowed here: I say no. I personally use my own webspace to display my artwork, but for others who can't do that, use services such as Elfwood to show off your goods.
Is stuff like photographic collages/filtered picture of famous people fanart?: This one's kind of tough. Probably not because it doesn't take much talent to slap together some pictures and mess with filters. Shouldn't fansites that deal with those specific people be reserved for this kind of artwork?
Photographic backgrounds?: ...If it's your art and you want a photographic background, just credit the photographer if it wasn't youself.
sprite Comics?: --a REAL toughie. The sprites are usually taken directly from games, so it's considered using original artwork. However, if you *make* the sprites yourself, based on the original design, then there shouldn't be a problem.
I talk too much, perhaps, but I do strongly feel that a fanart site should be just that. Leave everything else to those who are taking care of such things. Besides, I've always felt that there's more love in a picture that some's actually made then in one that someone's altered. Also, original work should remain original, and that's why it's important for fanartists to be original themselves. You'll be respected for your talents as an artist by creating original works, and not compared to professionals for how well you copied their work. Be respectful to people and others will respect you in turn. |

Pictures containing other artwork such as most wallpapers- Um...I'd say don't post it, this is fan art place! Well, I think if the wall paper are pictures YOU drew, I guess it's okay.
Use of someone else's fanmade character/s- With thier permission ONLY.
And I'd like to state this. COSPLAY IS NOT FANART. Cosplay is short for costume play like Halloween stuff...
Okay, I think I'm done...I'm too young to think...

I'm bringing up something that, I think, hasn't been brought up, yet. How do you people feel about members that post obviously traced pics? My example: Nitz. He has another Nitz name, but I don't remember the numbers that are included with it. Anyway, I'm not sure if all of his pics are traced, but most of the ones I've come across were.
*edited* Oops. Yeah, it'd be interesting to accuse myself of tracing. ^_^;; |

Now, are these the standards/rules of the site now, or were those just your opinions there denis at hte end?
I stopped reading through all the opinions in detail long ago, it's get tiring reading through all of them when they basically all agree with slight difference. So, what's the verdict if i may ask? Or when can be be expecting one. |

Fine...I just have a observation:
when having complains of copied artwork...and the artists agreed to do a trade...what will happen if one of the artist is put ip in the wall of shame...because the other didn't do the artwork in time?? and if soo...what happens when the artist is found "not guilty" of any of the "charges" made into charge??
Just an observation, and a simple question from:
Alex....please reply soon, I'm going to make a trade but am afrai to do soo, beacause I need infomation |

This is actually about the sprite comics. they are okay as long as you don't over do it (everything you post is a sprite comic)
Copying offcial art as long as you draw it is okay, just not other peoples fanart

Trades: I'm not sure what you're asking. If you're doing an art trade, you each draw a picture and upload them. I don't know how either artist would be reported.
Photos: Depends on what the photo is of. If it's a picture of some kind of fanart, probably, but general photography...there's better places for it. It's art, of course, but there are sites that cater to it a lot better. Wait for a Denis answer. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Same concept as the wall of shame--public embarrassment. Once people are caught, they usually disappear so that doesn't really make any difference probably.
