Burnout Or Fade Away?

Which do you think is better for musicians? Between burning out, such as getting too into your fame and money and just crashing and ending a career of music that way, or fading away, simply being forgotten.

Most might say burning out is better, because you leave a skid mark, so to speak, when you leave. But the burnouts eventually become the punchline in a media joke or pun. When fading away may be just as embarrasing when someone asks "remember him/them?" then everyone laughs.

But fade aways can be remembered for a good song or even an album, when burnouts are remembered for that embarrasing DWI ticket they got.

I choose fade aways. But that doesn't mean they're better, it's just my opinion.

I picked fading away too, if an artist dies in hilarious/tragic fashion, all songs from them will remind people of that incidient, I mean, who hasn't listened to one John Lennon song and thought about that assasination?

EDIT: come to think about it, The Beatles is an ecclectic mix of bot fading away and burnout at the same time.

The problem with fading away is it oftens goes along with disgracing any accomplishments that there were. For example, Kurt Cobain will forever be remembered as this revolutionary genius and all the great things Nirvana did (open to debate, but in general). Sure, everyone will always think of his death as one of the first things, but they also only remember the good parts of his musical career.

On the other hand you have these musicians who fall into a slow decline, release crappy albums, or simply refuse to admit they're past their prime and need to give it up. KISS are a perfect example. No one cares what KISS is doing anymore, concert attendance is way down, and they're a weak joke of what they used to be. But they keep falling further and further without just calling it quits. Eventually they'll completely fade out, but the fading out process destroys the image of what used to be cool.

So yeah, my vote goes to burn out. And considering Def Leppard included the line "it's better to burn out than fade away" in their music, they should really take their own advice.

Burn out.
It's much easier to deal with, you feel sad for the band that did burn out, then the next day you move on I guess.

Seeing a abnd that you loved fading away hurts, but see a dumb cocky band fade away is paradise.
But indeed, I vote burn out!

haha, I was going to mention Nirvana burning out. And that that was one of the few good ways to burn out. I still stick by what I first chose. I remember the good things about fade aways, I remember HOW burnouts burn out.

It depends on the fade away. If they faded gracefully, then you only remember the good things. If they faded painfully, kicking and screaming, it's a crappy way to go. More or less destroys everything they were. "That was really cool, but man, look at them now "

Hey, only partially on this one. 'Cause it depends on the circumstances. Suicide/homicide/accidental death/quick break up are better burn outs, but graceful transitions into obscurity are better fade aways. Like I'm much happier that Faster Pussycat have faded back into being a tiny bar act, and no one remembers them, rather than have a death or break up. But if they tried to be Aerosmith and refused to accept their situation, then just giving it a quick end would be better.

It's a hard choice when both options are equally good.

Oh you silly silly boy. The Beatles did not "fade away". Nor did they "burn out", in fact. They broke up when they were still way popular, and their populairity is still thriving. I mean, look at my username! They never made a crappy album. Their record is spotless. John and Paul may have put out some crap as solo artists, but The Beatles as a group are unrivaled.
The break-up was a huge, bitchy, messy affair, but that's not what people remember. They remember the songs. Well, a lot of people remember clean-cut moptops, which is kind of annoying because deep down, beneath all that cleaning up Brian gave them, they were just a bunch of greasy leather-jacketed rock and rollers who like to take drugs and bang women.

But I'm getting off-topic.... WAY of-topic.

Anyway, I say it's better to fade away, because whenever you remember that cool band that faded away, you think "Aw, what a shame, they were so great." But when you remember that band that burned out, you think "What losers! hahaha!"

I think people are using two different definitions of "burn out". Burn out is any sudden end, be it a break up or death or anything of the sort. It doesn't necessarily mean burn out like "the stress got too much, we sucked, so we broke up suddenly", it's a metaphor to a light. Like a candle. Suddenly burning out or fading away.

So the Beatles did burn out, just not in the "we couldn't do it anymore, we spent all our money, so we had to quit" way.
