Before I started taking Japanese classes, all the Japanese words that I knew came from anime. Couldn't read a single character of the language either. And now, two years later... Eh, well, I suck, but I can read children's books! And sometimes understand them! o~o If you're really interested in learning Japanese, you should take some classes or find a tutor.

...Or hang out on this thread because we are all Japanese language masters over here. XD

Classes! Were might i find classes? I attend a k-12 school and the only foriegn language class we can take( have to take) is Spanish. I wish I could take classes.

This is really sad. All the Japanese I've learned is from reading various "introductions to Japanese online" and a online 100 most important words for anime on a yale site. And of course reading the english-japanese dictionary always works too (bursts into tears at so little accomplished in one and half years of work)

Lol. Maybe we can impart some wisdom, then, although I think Raymei can do it best. ^_^; She doesn't post very often anymore, though.

But yes, it's best to find a tutor... Well, sisnce your school doesn't support it, you can always make a petition, I guess. Or you can look up any Japanese language schools in your area. Those schools are like night schools, and you only learn Japanese there...

I've got enough trouble spelling in English, learning Japanese won't help.

Where am I going to find a tutor? The closest "city" only has 300 people.

But I do have a question! How do you pernounce different "ie" "ai" "oi" and other two vowel combinations?

i can only understand when people say them,and that's like 4,5 words?Bluek.I can't read the characters,except for 'no' and 'watashi' and 'ku' and others.Wanted to take lessons but couldn't find any. <_<

kay, this has been bugging me for a while. "wa doko e yuku" depending on where it's put can refer to either "where am I going" or also "where are you going" right? I kept wondering about it after listening to the ending of .hack//sign.

Heh, I recognized that phrase immediately - guess I've listened to the .hack//SIGN OSTs too many times. Weird to start the sentence with 'wa', but it's probably finishing off the earlier part of a sentence.

Yeah, the Japanese aren't big on using personal pronouns, so it can be difficult to figure out who is being talked about. "Doko e yuku?" could mean any of "where am I/you/we/he/she/they going." You pretty much have to depend on context to figure out which one it is. I'm not sure by what you mean when you say 'depending on where it's put' though. Putting it in a different spot in a sentence won't change its meaning. Putting it in a sentence with a different subject will.

I never really considered Japanese to be a full-fledged written language

about half are kanjis (Chinese characters that the Japanese use without paying loyalties) and American words in katakana

You pronounce the characters seperately, as if they're not combinations, unless it's something like "iu", which would be pronounced like "yu".

It is. I don't think I've ever seen a sentence starting with a particle. o.o;

I think your name in kana would be "サマンサー" but I'm not sure. :/ *really bad at changing names to katakana* D:

Looks like you were trying to say, "My name is Samantha." Made enough sense to me. :)

As for spacing, it's generally not used. I'm sure there's a time where they [i]do[/i] use it, but I haven't encountered that. I guess spacing just makes it easier for 外人 to read.
