I know this is not going to make me popular with fallen and Sixx but honestly! There seems to be a huge '80s revival going on lately and I don't like it one bit! Aside from a very very few selections of bands, and some movies (especially the John Hughes teen films) I don't think the '80s were that great at all. They had the most horrible fashions ever! Acid washed jeans? Oversized sweaters? Leg warmers? And that HAIR!!! *shudders*
Anyone agree?

I actually agree with you Mairi. Even the music, while I like listening to it, hairmetal wasn't like that great in terms of talent. I mean, they were more talented than some bands that are out now but Ratt is certainly no AC/DC and Poison definetly doesn't hold a candle to Aerosmith. But thats just in terms of talent. :)
Fashion sucked back then too. The style back then was for women to look like mushrooms and honestly, I don't like looking like a mushroom. I would hate having hair like that everyday only because teasing it hurts. Crazy styles too. Like "lets see how unproportioned I can make my head look."
But just because they suck doesn't mean I can't still like them. Its no fun liking something if you can't make fun of it too. _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

The 70's rocked hard tasty cock. That's why they made a TV show about it. _________________

Ashton is overrated, Wilmer Valderrama is the eye candy on that show. _________________ |
And that HAIR!!!
That hair was hot. Of course, I partially say that 'cause I naturally have that hair, except for the height. But the volume/size most definitely. And if that hair comes back in fashion for men, thank the good lord, 'cause the closest I have now is shitty emo hairstyles with weird bangs and randomly dyed patches. Robert Plant hair would also be acceptable, though.
And hey, there were just as many talented 80s bands as there were talented 70s bands. The 70s weren't all Aerosmith and Black Sabbath (who aren't particularly technically brilliant, just style-wise). There are soooo many guitar gods and amazing singers that no one notices because they can only see the hair and makeup and spandex. George Lynch is an incredible guitarist. Jani Lane and Sebastian Bach have strength and range in their voice that most frontmen would kill for. Nikki Sixx can write lyrics with the best of them. And yeah, you don't get much more fun than Poison, musical inadequacy aside.
You just gotta look for 'em. 80s mainstream culture sucked as much as it has ever since the birth of the music industry. Tiffany and Debbie Gibson and Wham! and Culture Club...A-Ha and Duran Duran... Devo... But there's horrendous music from the 70s that everyone loved at the time. What do you think punk was rebelling against? Legwarmers and polo shirts and 20 Swatch watches are lame. Leather and ripped denim is cool.
The only way I'd want to live in the 80s, or 70s New York for that matter, would be to really be here in Los Angeles and a part of what made it so cool. Not sitting in Nebraska watching it on tv and reading Kerrang. Living in regular 80s America sucked hard, but the 90s weren't exactly disneyland. Normal life just sucks, no matter the time. But being there at the place that defines an era is wicked cool. If you were at the Rainbow or Gazzarris or the Whisky or drove to hollywood every week to help your favorite band hand out flyers and could walk down the strip and see all the musicians passing out promotional stuff, it's far different. The ones who really enjoyed and miss the 80s are the ones who did that. They're the minority, but punk and metal and Aerosmith are also minorities. I shouldn't need to tell anyone that the Run DMC remake gave Aerosmith a kick in the ass.
I hate the 80s revival 'cause it's always done in a parody. The Darkness. Legwarmers. $21 t-shirt reproductions. But the 80s did not suck. Don't make me post my list of 100+ bands from the era that are above and beyond anything in mainstream right now (aside from the revivals, like Velvet Revolver and whatnot). The pop culture of spandex and ratted hair and Bangles and legwarmers is crappy. But so was disco.
I'ma defend the 80s, stfu. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Speaking of all of this, VH1 is premiering I Love the 80s 3D.
This might be promising because they really don't have much else to talk about so maybe some hair metal bands and GnR will make it onto there. :D
I hope they make a third thing for I Love the 90s after this. Thats like the time period I can actually remember. _________________ Vaccum cleaners may look fun, but are deadly sex toys. as are certain vegetables like, terri schiavo -Powtaz |

I'm so tired of I Love The 80s, though. Two hours per year is plenty. That anyone can talk about. It's gotta be stuff they can get people to actually remember, and even in the second one, it's like "Hey, remember this doll too?" "Yeah" "It was cool" "sure was"
Enough already, VH1.
I think the Poison and Appetite For Destruction mentions in the first one is all they'll get.
God knows what they have left to talk about. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I actually liked when they talked about the doll. I used to have a Glowworm too. :P
I can't think of anything else they can talk about either. They should be making more for the 90s version. I can think of like a ton of things they left out with the 90s. I was totally ripped off with that one.
At least we get to see that Micheal Black guy..or whatever his name was. And Sebastian Bach! :o

I...rather like keeping my '92 image of Baz and ignoring the fried hair, laughin at his own jokes, I'm-such-a-bitch Baz of today. 100 Most Metal Moments....eesh. Baz. :(
I actually liked the When Metal Ruled The World better, in terms of people making comments. Who cares what X actor thinks? "omg I had a cabbage patch doll!" la-di-fuckin'-da. But When Metal Ruled The World had Bret and Bobby Blotzer and Dee Snider and George Lynch and Frankie Banali and Ricki Rachtman and bloated fried Baz again and Taime (lookin' super rock star-ish) and horribly aged Tawny Kitaen and choir boy haircut Vince...
Good stuff.
I end up hating half the people they get to comment on I Love The ___ and all the stupid little catch phrases they come up with. "The babes of '89. I'm Bret Michaels, and I outta know"
Anything else they come up with won't be "I love the 80s" it'll be "this existed in the 80s". No one ever really liked it, but they remember it.
MTV has their reality shows, VH1 has their nostalgia shows. They can't leave well enough alone. Even Bands Reunited was lame. Who wants Flock of Seagulls to perform again? Hopefully no one.
Things they need to do on the third I Love The 80s:
~ Pay Tracii Guns to give his brilliant insight on whatever topic he wants, since they fucked him over and cut him out entirely from BTM: Gn'R and made him waste a day off being interviewed.
~ Talk about me. 'Cause I was born.
~ Labyrinth. I don't remember if it was in one of the others, but if it isn't, it should be.
~ Fire half the people they get to comment.
~ Bring in people who are funny. Or who deserve an opinion.
~ Stop talking about "yuppies". Stop complaining about them, but also stop discussing anything related to them. The clothes were stupid.
Then I might watch. Maybe. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

One of my best friends absolutely adores the 80's and everything about it.
So to respect my friend and her obsession, I'll defend the 80's. |
