So yeah, I noticed that general discussion is becoming a little empty. Almost all topics in the General section are being directed to random. And that got me thinking: Where does one draw the line between a "general" discussion, and a "random" one. Are not most general discussions random, being that they do not fit into any other category? Is not General Discussion reserved for such topics that the moderators could not conceive of ahead of time. With that in mind, are not all threads started here random ones? Ha, and you thought this was just a shameless attempt at raising my post count. Or is it? Have I disguised this thread so well as an actual conversation that you, the mods, will be fooled? Was I cognizant of this thread going in, or did it just evolve as I started typing, aware that if I didnt make this thread about something, it would be immediately closed, thus hindering my post count progression? Is all of this in your head? Is it in mine?
Your opinions, please.

Will, darling, deep down do you just love annoying me? Making me take the two extra seconds to click "move/close thread"?
No, not everything in general is random, nor is everything in random general. The difference is not content, but intent. If a thread is so silly that a discussion purely related to that topic is impossible, it belongs in random. Most of what is in Random at the moment truly does belong there and not in General, how long would a thread consisting of a picture with the feet reversed or statements about Vin Diesel last? Some of it, like the imaginary friends thread, could be in General, but it's pretty obvious how long anyone can take them seriously.
We actually considered the need for General when we added all the new sections, leaving very few things that didn't fit. But some things do, and even more could if people would post them there and manage to stick to the subject. The avatar thread, the body hair thread, the food thread, the contacts thread, all of those are general material.
General stays because if someone wants to ask a question, about contacts for example, without two pages of you and Gray being assholes, they should have a place to do that.
If people want to post their topic in Random and condemn it to being reduced to pages of nonsense with very little relation to the original subject, that's fine. They now have a place to do that. But they will not be counted as "community participation"/post count because posting three pages of "o rly" is not the same as those who have written thoughtful conversations in all the other sections.
If you want to increase you post count, do it without being a fuckin' douchebag and start some topics that don't center on your douchebag-dom.
That being said, I'm very tempted to just close this, as it really does serve no purpose, and I'd encourage you to step away from your computer this late at night, but I'll leave it for the time being. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Nah, I actually started this thread for the very reason I stated in the heading: General Discussion itself seemed to be lagging, with one or two new topics every so often, while random received ten new threads every single day. This generally intrigued me, and I began wondering how one would separate the two, as (sadly) the threads in Random more closely resemble my real life conversations (that "Hulk's Ass" thread? straight out of Saturday evening, word for word), while General seems rather contrived.
But you know me, I have to add a humorous bent to almost everything I do. Otherwise this place would get boring. ^_^

I think all this general/random stuff belongs in philosophy... but who am I to judge I'm just a "weirdo," who believes in dragons.
note "weirdo" is in quotations because it's what people think of me, not what I think of myself, or of anyone who believes in dragons. _________________ http://www.skjeret.com/images/WindWaker/NintendoGallery/G4/Mothula.jpg |

Well then, drag your fantasy-believing butt on down to philosophy and stop wasting everyone elses time. Lets here it for posts that have next to nothing to do with the topic.
And "why" do you believe a topic that has nothing to do with philosophy *cougharedragonsreal* belongs in philosophy? _________________

And this thread has gone exactly the direction I expected it to.
You can thank the fact no one else saw your point and decided to post like morons, Will. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
