The Grand Theft Auto series. It pioneered the "sandbox" based play mechanics. And how many other games do you know of that copied this? I can think of at least ten right off the top of my head. Not to meantion all the run-in's it's had with "the law", so to speak. Where would court cases be without GTA? ^_^

True, Harvest Moon is a series. But that's the one in my generation that I remember. And that's my favorite one so far. XD Though I'll probably like the new one they're coming out with too...And yes, Halo has indeed been influential. Not on me, but as you said, the gaming world.
Voice acting? I dunno, voice acting has been used since the PSX days. :x Not just small things like battle attacks or something like that, but full blown dialogue after dialogue after dialogue of it.
But I'm thinking more in the sense of who they got to do the voice acting. Not the how, or the fact that games have used voice acting ever since Spyro and Legend of Dragoon....

Who, huh? Tonnes of games have had famous voice actors...

Oh, sorry. I just remembered that no one else here plays Japanese only video games, and so wouldn't have the slightest clue as to what I'm talking about. :|

Maybe KH has something there, then. Maybe.

...

"...of all time" - that's slightly misleading. Didn't tell me that this thread was going to be ethnocentristic. :x

Alison, with all due respect, you're 13, you don't have a generation yet.

Kingdom Hearts was definately not the game that set the 'good voice acting' standards in english. I think the game that takes that crown is Metal Gear Solid for the PSX.

But I think MGS has it's fair amount of influence:

Spectacular Voice acting (actually better than the original JP)

Cinema quality presentation (Hideo Kojima's direction was just brilliant)

Even in the NES Metal Gear; the fact that you could actually sneak up on an enemy was unheard of at the time.

There's more, but it's 3:30am and I am not giving a good arguement for it due to lack of sleep.

Anyone agree with me on this one?

The name Inu-Chan is gay, and stupid, You'd want Koinu.

If you're around 13-16, you're more than likely apart of the 'Late PSX-Early Dreamcast Generation' or 'PS2 is still too much money and nintendo is gehi0SGf9-wd lolsosls' generation. So technically, everybody has their own time.

Little Dog...why would you want that name? Inu-chan. Inu by itself means dog. Chan is a reference you give to either a close friend, or a youngster.

Personally, I think the name Alison is fine. Ali. Alis. But you are a bit young, so it's natural to feel this way.

At least you don't have my name Wink

Tengoku... 天国... Laughing But it's "okay" 'cause:

1) It has nothing to do with Inuyasha, and
2) It doesn't have something dumb like -san, -sama, -dono, or -chan attached to it.

Oh yeah, let's not forget the series Angelique. That series spawned a whole genre single-handedly. xD

Why? I like lil puppies. XD And actually, my name doesn't have anything to do with InuYasha. I just got the idea because Inu means dog, and chan means small or little. So I'm a lil dog. And I'm a girl....So I'm a little bitch. >3

-chan doesn't literally mean "small" or "little". It doesn't really translate literally. It's like a nickname. IE, Lilian-chan is like saying Lily as a nickname in English. :x That's how I see it, anyway.

PS, "wanchan" is a better nickname for puppies than "inuchan". Razz

Anyway, back on topic...

Expanding a bit more on Angelique, I'd say it's an extremely huge influence on video games. (It spawned its own genre! How could it not be?) :o

Basically, way back in 1994 or 1996 or something, some Japanese company (Koei, ) saw that there were tonnes of male gamers, but female gamers seemed to be lacking. "So", they thought, "why don't we make a game made specifically for girls!?"

Of course, someone had to say, "But what would girls want to play?"

"What do girls like?"

"Well, they like makeup, and being pretty..."

"And boys?"

"Yeah!!"

And thus the dating sim genre was born.

Angelique started out fairly basic - there's nine male characters besides the main character (Angelique), who you can, depending on your choices and interactions with them, end up marrying. Of course, that's pretty limited, and if it always stayed like that, it wouldn't be popular for long... so its sequels were made to have much more storyline in them (eg, Angelique: Tenkuu no Requiem became a sort of RPG/dating sim).

Even now, the series is still going strong, with several games in the series (counting all the ports, probably about seven or eight games, maybe more), and it also has a huge platoon of cds (especially drama cds) as well as a whole lot of ovas, as well as [I think] a manga series. And when I say a whole lot, I mean a lot. I believe it also inspired the series, "Harukanaru Toki no Naka de", done by the same people (Koei, and I think Ruby Party), which has a following that's probably nearly as big as Angelique's. AND Haruka has its own anime series, too, in addition to its OVAs/[drama] cds/manga.

And it's created a huge female fanbase, as originally intended.

Not only that, but the genre is so huge now, most anime have dating sim games based on them. Especially in shoujo anime and anime like Love Hina.

Not only that, but the genre has also been split to incorporate BL (Boy's Love) games. Again, intended fanbase probably being the female population.

Is there any question why I love Koei? ;P

Nope.

I'd like to say Star Ocean had a huge influence on battle scenes and styles. I mean, it's pretty unique (only downfall, they still used the 64-bit sprites in Star Ocean 2 >< But I loved it nonetheless)
