Tetsuya Nomura (野村哲也; Nomura Tetsuya) is a game and character designer at Square Enix. Before working for Square Enix, formerly Squaresoft, Nomura was at a vocational school creating art for advertisements. In 1992, Square hired him to work on the battle graphics of Final Fantasy V and then as graphic director in 1994 for Final Fantasy VI. In 1996, a game project called Silent Chaos (which was originally the sequel of Dark Earth, a PC adventure game) was stopped after several months of development, and became a PlayStation game, developed in collaboration with Square Enix. The characters, designed by Franois Rimasson at the beginning, were totally designed again by Tetsuya Nomura; but the project never ended and Silent Chaos was definitively stopped in November 1999, after 2 years and a half of development.
Tetsuya Nomura did not gain recognition until 1997, when Squaresoft asked him to be the character designer for their new opus, Final Fantasy VII. The game was a commercial success. In 1998, he worked on both Parasite Eve & Brave Fencer Musashi. The following year, Nomura worked on another game that achieved commercial success--Final Fantasy VIII--where he acted as the lead character designer and the battle visual director.
Afterwards, Nomura worked on several other miscellaneous projects such as Ehrgeiz and Parasite Eve II for the PlayStation. He continued on to design characters for Squaresoft's first PlayStation 2 venture, (The Bouncer), before returning to character designing for the Final Fantasy series with Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, and Final Fantasy XI. More recently, he has acted as the director, concept artist, and character designer for Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II.
words stolen right out of my one dimensional god, Wikipedia.
unsurprisingly, because he is a pure character designer, he almost never has to draw backgrounds. lucky bas#@%!
In 1997, Cloud Strife was born, Men with huge fre#king sword has never been same again...
After first getting his role of designing characters for FFVII, he was reassigned his role for Final Fantasy VIII.
There were no involvement of tetsuya Nomura for FFIX, which could explain why that series don't have a hoards of fangirls following its every step.
Finial Fantasy X, As the artist matures, so does his art.

He is currently working on Kingdom Hearts 2, but no information is given if he will participate in Final Fantasy XII or XIII.
(not his work) Animaters need excellent character designs to make serious scenes believable and realistic. Mr. Nomura has certainly accomplished that.

PS. The shortest profile ever . There's not much to talk about him if the only thing he did was game after game after game...
PSII, KAWAII! (his sketch from parasite Eve)

When I first heard about FFVII not having Yoshitaka Amano on board, I was pretty upset, especially after the masterpiece that was FFVI.
But he did prove himself, and continues to do so. At first, I dismissed him as generic. But he has definately molded his own unique style. Great thread. |

I actually like Amano's art more, but Nomura's art is pretty good, too. Strangely enough, I think I like his "cartoony" pictures more. _________________

I'll admit it. I hated his FFVII work. All of the caracters were pretty much in the same position, and leaning way off to the side.
He definately got better though. I actually didn't know he did those Kingdom Hearts designs until just now. ^^;; They're so much of an improvement from his earlier work. _________________ a jelly calypso castle in the sky |

I love his work! I wonder how much younger I'd be if I'd never heard of final fantasy I wonder.... if I could take back all those hours from playing on the games in the series!
I actually didn't know he did those Kingdom Hearts designs until just now. ^^;;
Oh me too! Funny, I never really like the character designs for ff9, and I couldn't figure it out. And now I know why!
(off topic).... why does the main character have a tail?!! Please tell me!! It's the most random thing. I never understood that one at all .... I stopped playing it before I found it out.
Back on topic, sadly I think the final fantasy 12 characters look too much like the other ones in previous games to be honest. Oh and the re-design of Tidus in Kingdom Hearts was just an insult!!
Oh, and has anyone else noticed in Kingdom Hearts that the eyes of the final fantasy characters. That their pupils are all swirly (Like the al bhed on final fantasy 10.... ) But the disney characters's eyes are normal ..... (except Peter Pan's which are cross eyed! *lol*)
But overall I love his work! |
