Many people have tried to narrow down who the best rapper was in the history of hip hop music. I have had heated discussions with people over this.
There's definately a lot of contenders. Source magazine called Notorious B.I.G the best MC ever, and yes he's one of the best. Tupac was a true street poet. Jay-Z said " If I ain't better than Big, I'm the closest one." Nas killed Jay-Z during their battle in 2001 with the song Ether. Current lame rappers like Eminem and 50 cent, don't even come close to picking up the title.
But in my opinion the best of all time so far is Big Punisher. He had the best stories, rhymes, beats, he had it all. Anyone agree. |

Run DMC had great beats and they were pretty innovative. I still listen to them all the time. But I don't think they were the best ever, personally, but they are definately legends.
Twista is a very fast rapper but I don't think he's made much of an impact yet in the rap game.
Yes, Snoop Dogg is a west coast gansta rap icon but in terms of rapping abilities I don't think he can be called the best ever. Definately to some people he might be the best. |

depends on how you judge. Tupac had the most street credibility, that matters alot in rap music. He was an impact artist, like Ice T could be. And a poet like you said. His rythm was always off in his later days tho.
I don't like JayZ, seems to me its all about image to him, that only works in punk, rock and pop, i think. Busta Rymes can be fun (not for me tho) but it's all the same with him. I would prefer DMX over any east coast rapper.
Ice Cube is one of the best when it comes to beats and rhythm and lyrics. Snoop dogg just feeds off of his 90's fame, he came out fighting. With the whole deal with Eazy E and Dr. Dre. Btw, Eazy E was always better than Dre and snoop. Those two are pussies, really, serious pussies. I liked Bone thugz for a time because they finally came out with a new style. Something different. Emenim is good with rhyme and word play and all that s**t. He wouldn't really say all those things to these peoples faces tho. But he did to Mark walburg on live tv.. that was brave, Marky Mark could pound the little s**t into the floor. But get him in the back of the building and he's crying like layz's baby.
Eazy E's Real Muthafuckin G'z was the best battle song evar, in my opinion. Because they also tried to make it a good song, instead of just random insults thrown everywhere. Plus the insults were hilarious.
East Coast rap seems to me like... fake rap. Like it's all manufactured to sound like real rap, lol, sorry, it just sounds like that to me. They center to much around knowledge and culture. Just too different from what rap has been turned into these days. I wont deny there are some good rhythms coming from the east coast tho. They just sometimes seem to be on uppers and feeling phylosophical too much West Coast rap is more of the gang violence and women, last i heard. Rap from the South (NO, Houston, etc.) sounds like everyone is high. It's more laid back and slow. Of course, I havent listened to rap music at all this century so i could be off on alot of things. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

Nah, Snow was a Canadian white guy one hit wonder. With his song "Informer". Which sounds mostly like nonsense except the line "a licky boom boom down".

Yeah, Eazy-E was the man. He was hilarious with songs like Automobile and he also basically invented Gangster Rap. Some people say he was a better businessman than a rapper, but I like to listen to him because his songs were really easy to follow. Almost as if he was talking instead of just rapping. His voice was unique and he has a lot of songs that can get people on the dance floor. He was definately one of a kind. |

well it's harder to choose since different rappers do different things better. I never liked Notorious BIG, but he was very good with rhythm patterns. There are still alot of underground artists who i think are better than most mainstream out now. I didn't know three six mafia was still making music and Sgt_Cooper_Hoorah (Tuskegee Ace), most the guys you just named were tailor-made for the business. I dont like image in rap, Chingy? come on, he was thrown out there at a short period of time when rap was lagging and noone new was coming out. Lil John is too damn annoying, lol, really he is I like Ludacris, atleast he keeps himself clean. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

Chingy's been otu a while in Stl. were I live so I've heard him for a while...
True...Chingy=Fail Nelly=Fail Lil John=Fail
The only reason why I named them is because those are like the top names in the rap buisness at the moment, since Jay-z has "Retired"
Ludacris though is different...Move Bitch, Throw dem bows, Act a Fool,
All his songs are catchy and easy to like... |

Personally, I disagree with what you say about eminem... I believe he actually has the record for most rap records sold... so I'd say he is number one... but I think his closest contender is actually Eve, or maybe Lil Kim... but definitely not Missy Elliott... I think she stinks like leftover crack... [the substance... not the band...] _________________ http://www.skjeret.com/images/WindWaker/NintendoGallery/G4/Mothula.jpg |

Number one in quality is not measured in record sales.
The public are sheep and typically buy the worst in quality because it is cheap and easy. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Aww, you don't like Lil John James? :(
I actually like most of his songs. You have to also keep in mind that he's a Producer. Not a rapper. I mean, he appears in music videos and even writes a few songs of his own but he's a rap producer first before a performer. Him and that guy who did the Drop it Like its Hot song are kind of like..um..whats the word I want to use..well they're supposed to pump people up. They get listeners excited for the song and the rappers. Really, have you ever actually heard Lil John rap? No. He's mostly there to shout the chorus or in the beginning. I guess its just whether or not you like his voice or not. I like it. It gets me excited and ready to tear up a dance floor even though I know I can't dance. ^_^
But yeah, I like Lil John. He had that song Lets Go with the Crazy Train samples which sounded really good with the song. Gets me pumped up and ready to dance. ;)
I've always been a fan of Kanye West for some reason. His songs have always seemed interesting to me. They're a bit overplayed on the radio but other than that, they're good songs. Lyricly unique, they have like messeges in them if you look into the lyrics, excellent beats that get the blood flowing..I mean, how could you not enjoy that? Plus, he gets some pretty good singers to feature in his songs. I love Jamie Foxx so thats like a big reason why I like Golddigger. And even though I don't care for Maroon 5, I did enjoy their frontman's voice in that new song Heard 'Em Say.
Heard 'Em Say, by the way, is very good. I love the piano samples Kanye used for this song. Its a new sound that really works for the mood of the song. :)
I also think Tupac is very talented. He was like a street poet and his songs were deep and personal to him. He kept it real which is no longer seen in this industry anymore.
I totally love that song California Love that he raps in. Good beat, great rhymes, good dancing times.
