I can help you out, but painting takes years get used to.

I recommend acrylic for beginners, get Winsor and Newton Galleria acrylic starter set, some canvas paper, a pad of disposable palette paper, and 4-5 bristle brushes.

You can find tutorials almost everywhere, unlike a CG program, there are books in your library dating back decades.

Yeah, Acrylic's a good one to start out with. They have a wide range of colours, and the expensive stuff is really nice. Tempura's okay, too, but only if you're using it for something smallish, like on paper.

I'm painting a ceiling tile and tried a bit of it on that (my art teacher told me to switch from acrylic to tempura, the stupid whore); bad idea. Dried far too quickly, and the colours weren't as vibrant as the acrylics. The colours frustrated me a bit because they didn't blend quite like acrylics do, which is what I was used to using before. Plus, it doesn't have that plasticky shine when it dries and it has a very flat colour. That wouldn't matter if it were on paper, but it's not paper. xD It needs the sort of thing acrylic does. Plus, when it dries, you can't see little details like the brush strokes, which are one of the things I look for a lot of the time in paintings when I'm studying them. xD Not only that, but you almost have to use water. :/ Nooooo. D:

there's ALWAYS Galeria paints in American art stores, (those artists' ones, not Wal-mart art section) they're extremeley popular. 3-4 dollars per 60mL of paint.

get a pad of canvas paper before you want to try Canvas

----->
Canvas paper > Canvas board > Canvas

get a good set of bristle brushes (not the ones in dollar stores) and get a old plate for palette (watercolor palette with lil' holes and spaces won't do) and have fun.
