The welcomed compliment turns sour. They state,"Wow, you're a really good artist!"

You start to feel good, when they tack on the disclaimer:

"...it's better than I can do. All I can draw are stick figures"

Suddenly, their compliment loses the bulk of it's granduer. I know that they probably mean differently, but it's always bugged me a bit.

Anyone get this too?

Yeah, it's comes off sounding very general, as if you have the skills to create more than just a doodle. Now if they were to point out certain parts of your work that truely made it a piece of art, that would be a real compliment.

I like hearing that "you're a good artist" line from good artists. Their opinion makes me feel special. Smile

I use to say simular. like "Man your great at CG colouring, I can never do that"

but as the commenter..commenter << any who, as the commenter, I feel like I'm trying to get attention saying that, so I stopped. Also feel as you said, like "Oh your good, but only compaired to me. whitch isn't much"

I get that in real life too, and then wonder how the heck to answer. 0_o

That and comments like "cute" really get to me. GOOD CRAP if you're going to use site space, use it well.

I like it best when along with saying that a picture is good, they say WHAT they think is good about it.

Oh god, now I feel horrible. I don't draw, and sometimes it is the compliment I dish out, though I don't mean it in a demeaning way at all.

Usually, it's like saying, "I'm not an artist so none of my comments would aid you in search of that one-in-a-million critique, but I have to say your work is exceptional."

That's what the "stick figure" comment usually means.

Usually.

I don't mind when people say stuff like "you're good", I could do with all the ego-boosters I can get. But the line that always gets me is "how long did it take you to get that good?" I mean, what the hell?

QUOTE (Hypothetical Comment)
"how long did it take you to get that good?"
The time I can get out of 10 bucks with your mom! :woot:

oh snap

Seriously, things like that don't bother me too much, just the appreatiation that they took few seconds to input something ^_^

but when they finish it with "please come to my gallery and check out" ... Grr!

I hate people who advertise their own work in a comment. Have they no shame!? >_<

If I wanted to see your art, I'd look for it myself! But I don't, and that's why I haven't seen it before. So PISS OFF. >_<

I read some of those comments. A good number of them seem to be treating it like the joke it is, but some of them... o_o;;;; I have to wonder if they're serious or trying to be sarcastic and failing. :<

That's... pretty sad. :/ Hasn't happened to me yet, though.

...

Once I got called a sinner in a comment on a vampire that I drew. That was interesting. 8D

That being said, I've never received a critique (or even pseudo-critique) on any of my art. :< Well, Strata said something on one of the dragons I drew, but that was it. D:

I hate when people say "fav!" and they don't really study your work. It's like, the comment thing is there so that I can get honest critism and get better.

So far, nobody has said, "Will you be my friend?" or, "Check out my work", because I think they know they might as well kiss my ass. I found out the best way to get people to see my work was make comments that had a little critism in it, that way they replied back...Sorta.

That dot is rather amusing, I must admit.

Hmm...Never thought of it that way, yet yes, it makes sense. I think that they believe that by somehow becoming your "friend" you'll immeadietly add them to your favorite artists section and rain praise upon them.

Heh. Like that'll ever happen. Only people that get on my favorite lists are ones that show real, genuine, bonafide artistic skill. I don't hand out "good-jobs"...They must be earned.

Dear god, my mom being a teacher is rubbing off on me... WTF?

Eeekk...

I hate short comments. I say my art is crappy and they say "NO ITS NOT! IT SO FREAKIN AWESEOM!!! FAVES!" Those comments get on my nerves. Time to erase.

Random person: Oh. That's good! Draw me -insert request here-! Thank you! -walks away-
Me: Banghead

Happend to me a few times in art class. And she kept on bothering me too, everyday for like 2 weeks, So the one day I caved in, and started drawing what she wanted me to, and she walked up to me and said "Ew I don't want that! It looks like a ragdoll!" -_x

That's horrible. <_< You should go flick her off. At least you tried and spent even a little time on her uninvited request. Grr!
Morons irritate me.

That happens to me alot in school too. I'm not even in art class and people somehow still get to me and ask for stuff. Like I don't have enough requsets coming out of here...

"Can you draw me?"

W00t!

No.

Well I could, but I won't. Why do people want drawings of themselves? I only ever had a couple classmates randomly ask for drawings of other people (a lot of which I did, actually, 'cause I'm a people pleaser), but most people were stuck on the "Could you draw me?" question. Wtf no.

But I don't mind. If I did, I don't think I'd ever draw or be in art school where your work is constantly on display for comment.

I have an inferiority complex anyway. The constant uninvited comments probably help.

Youve done so well, yet, you get those short comments. Erase them! Very Happy

I don't mind short comments as long as they are relevant. "OMG GREEN DAY RULZ!!111!eleven!" doesn't seem too relevant though. heh. :slaps bad commenters with a badger:

I think I often leave relatively short comments but I try to at least point out something that I think is particularly good about the picture. I might point out that I also enjoy the subject matter itself, but I always try to point something well done or something that might need some work in the piece.
