I think that fanart central should limit how much pictures a user can have, like say 2 pages per person.

This will drastically improve server space, help load times, and also (indirectly) help cut down on wait times for the approval panel. People will have to be more strict on themselves on quality control, as they will have less space to play with. I mean 2 pages of space is still not bad and if you have some more pictures you want to put up, just simply delete the least popular/ or less appealing ones. Artists improve as they go along, and Im sure most artists out there want to show the best they can do not just fill the server up with a ton of 5-10 min doodles.

Well its just my 2 cents.

ps: (A belated Merry Christmas) and Happy New Year!

Edit: Just thought of something else that will help justify this idea. If you have say 5-10 pages of pictures; the person viewing your work weather it be on the first page, or in the picture gallery; they will most likely see your oldest work first. So if everyone had only 2 pages they will see only your best work. Sometimes the first impression is a lasting one.

Some artists, especially older or more productive ones, have far more than 40 good pieces. There's very little more annoying than having to sacrifice one piece for another.

I already have 2 pages, and i just got a new scanner so there will be a lot of pictures coming in from me, and i never have to wait long for my pictures to get approved i just upload them from my computer and they automatically appear in my section(i used to wait hours for them to be qued, not anymore!!) So i very much don't like the 2 pages per person idea, even though people always look at my bad pictures on my first page, but yeah that's why we can delete them.

I dont currently have any plans to limit artist gallaries however fac is taking up more and more space.

Someday I may limit galary size for free members, but I dont plan to set the limit that low.

Its not limiting gallery size what we need... it would be more useful to delete all the sketches and things like that, its common that someone sketches something, post it, ink it, post it, color it, post it... maybe it should be limited to only the final product... and maybe all the images should be hosted on another sites instead of being uploaded to FAC

That, and FAC wouldn't be popular for long. People don't like putting the extra effort into finding somewhere separate to upload their art on to, and if they're going to do that, they may as well make their own personal website. :<

I'm thinking though, when I hit 2000 pieces I'm going to completely delete everything off my gallery and start from scratch. Why? because I want to show people my detailed history of what I've been doing throughout those 2000 pieces. It shows that I've improved from the very first page to the last page.

What I think we need to have happen in really galleries and pictures from the very beginning of FAC need to be purged. Like if pictures are more than three years old, delete. And we really need to get rid of the stick figure pictures that people love to post on here.

I don't think limiting the sites pages for galleries is going to help much at all. Because then people will complain and whine like little...well you get the idea. And they'll leave. But more than that, we are planning on geting merch in by march right, denis? What will happen to all that money that went into the merch to get it? If we loose ok.. let's get a small number, four hundred people. That will be a blow to the merch selling or it could be. Now think of that on a large impact, one thousand and five hundred people leave, not buying one single thing because they are pissed at the site.

Can we say over charging on the merch? Can we say that people will by word of mouth tell how sucky that FAC is? Can we say complete failure?

Sure we'll have space for the site... but we won't have anyone who wants to be in the site anymore. And what is the point of having a site with out people on it.

Thats an interesting idea it would be a start or at least just put a time limit so the file will automatically delete. Sort of the same idea as if a member forgets to log out, they will be automatically removed after a curtain period of time (or is that monitored by someone?).

I Guess 2 pages is rather harsh, but on the flip side, one can cheat where you simply copy and paste 4 jpg images into one jpg file and shrink them down a bit to fit. It worked for me with one of my pictures, and Stratas Tutorial images (well barley but thats not the point).

As for the purging of files idea, it would also work, but sometimes an artist has a old one that happen to turn out extra nice; as not all pieces of art turn out better. Its just on an over all scale that artists improve.

I guess the best solution to the problem is to take one step at a time and not just do a big change all at once.

Any more ideas for saving space? I'm sure Strata already has a "Christmas list" size of ideas.

Oh no it didn't Razz I had to split up that tutorial into three pages, when it was originally composed on one.

I sorta agree with ya there. I don't understand why some people will upload two in-progress versions of it plus the final version at the same time.

I can understand uploading a WIP, doing work, uploading the new version, finishing it, and then uploading the final work, but when I see 3 stages of the same drawing right next to each other o nthe Recent Thumbnails list, I have to wonder. Why?

I agree that some of the older user accounts could stand to be purged. But which ones?

How about: All user accounts with zero pictures, who haven't logged on in the past 30 days, and all user accounts with fewer than a certain amount of pictures (five?), who haven't logged in since the past 60 days?

yes sounds nice, but they should get an email on the 15th, 30th, and 45th day to warn them about the deleting.... but... as denis already said, the problem isnt the storage capacity, its the amount of people looking at the stuff at the same time.... and its a little bit harder to fix that...

Let's learn from the Japanese... shall we?

Have white flashing, blinding gif pics that will give seizures/strokes to everybody who watches it and mark it under Inuyasha and Yugioh :3

title it "Kawaii Inuyasha sitting on a rock" or "YugixMary Sue" and watch 40% of the population die off. :3

I think the best way to do this is the way Strata (and some others) do where the include inprogress stuff as part of the final image.

I will be purging accounts that have 0 pictures & stories and are not validated or agreed.

And watch FAC die off a month later because 40% of the ad revenue disappeared with them.....

I only do that with my negatives (to compare the actual sketch with the final product) though.

You've got lots of good points there with the quality control and all, but they're right, there are lots of people who can submit up to 100s of good pictures.....
There should be some way to compensate this though, really, the points you've made are pretty strong.....

....they'll just never go over with people like Pienemien and such... 'cuz people doing their own mangas will never resolve to having only 2 pgs. ^^;

Still, there might be something to this idea......

I thought of something that might be a little better then my last idea, about limiting gallery space by how many pages one could have.

What about a megabyte limit instead? So say roughly 10-30 megabytes per person, and paying members would get more space, sort of like the same idea as our free email account inbox. All images are between 0-300kb anyway so it maybe not all bad. So in the end it would be really a choice between size of image and how many one person wants up.

I think you should also delete the accounts with pictures on them that haven't had any activity in a long while.
