It's a very good series. And if you want more creepy goodness from Darren Shan, read Lord Loss.Cirque Du Freak is actually rated 13+,but Lord Loss is rated is rated 15+.But both are very good.

I'm not flaming with this post, simply stating an opinion. If you don't want to read a negative oppinion, don't read this post.

I've read up to book 4. They're nothing special. The writer has an annoying writing style, and Darren isn't all that likeable. The way in which the story is portrayed, as a true story, that is unappealing and pathetic from my point of view.
From what I read, I found that depth was rare, and reading it required little thought. There were no big revelations and they were pretty predictable in themselves.
Also, Darren...what age is he in Cirque du Freak? I forget, but he acts eight or around that. The same with everyone else. A kid hurts his knee, and Darren sucks at the wound. Then he pretends be a stereotypical vampire, and everyone begins laughing. Sorry, but they would still be creeped out, rumors would spread and he'd become a black sheep. I found that, in areas like this, the story completely lost its direction. From the looks of things, it was to be a horror or dark thing. It fell flat on its face.
Some of my dislike for this story might also be due to my dislike for 1st Person books, or just the fact that the Vampires are uninteresting. I mean, what's said is WHAT they are, but not WHY. I always pictured them as, due to them being higher in the food chain, being a higher being, as well. The least they could do is better document themselves.

Mmmkay, so...first off..
Personally, I found Darren to be pretty likable. He was a kid who made a bad decision, suffered the consequences, and made a hard choice. I don't know about you, but I sure as hell couldn't have the personality of that kid if I was taken away from the world I was growing up in. He has his flaws, but come on....he's a kid.
Yes, it is not in depth, and can be quite predictable, but for me it's still exciting to see how it will unfold TO that predictable plot point. To a child, this probably would be scary. It made me keep reading the entire series, so it cant be all bad.

You just got to Vampire Mountain. You wanna learn more about vampires portrayed in this series, keep reading! To my friend and I, the books got progressively better as the series went on. You are only in the beginning of the story, so of course the main character will appear and technically still be...dun dun dunnnnn...a child! Laughing

And there's my opinion of your opinion. Wink

Surprised I don't suck! Sad
(Yes, I know that was your sig)

Well, it's not really something I want to get into. I found it to be too pretentious for my liking. I will read children's books to an extent, but some seem so simplistic that I just can't get into them. The Darren Shan books are too short, really, and not enough seems to happen.
There's also nothing to keep me interested. Like what happens next, or what this is. After reading vampire mountain, I admit I wanted to see exactly what these trials were, but I didn't care whether or not Darren would live or die...although I was actually hoping for him to die.
Anyway, I wasn't compelled to go out and get the book just for that. I like a compelling story, and likeable and believable characters. I found very little of that in the Darren Shan books, really. Like I said, the way in which the school children worked was completely unrealistic.
This was also the first book I've read where I found I disliked the writer himself. Who tells people that a story is true when it so blatantly isn't?...well, I will, I guess. But I'll be taking the piss anyway:

The following is based on true happenings and carefully researched information and insight into our world in five hundred years. Although it has not happened, I can guarrantee you that it will. This is a true story...

...and if you believe that, you'll believe anything.

Well, after reading Stephen King's forward in the extended edition of The Stand, I felt compelled to do the same with mine. It's always nice to have a little message from the author :D

Anyway, I'm going off topic.
Another reason I'm not really planning on continuing the story is because when I start reading 1st person stuff, I feel compelled to do the same in my own writing, and it tends to completely mess it up, as I much prefer 3rd.
As for the age thing, I remember he's about 12 or something. At least into his teen years. My problem was that he didn't act it. Again to the bit where he sucks the kid's knee and makes everyone laugh. That wouldn't work, even if he was in a school full of wiccans, goths and satanists.

Since when does a fantasy book have to be realistic? IMAGINATION! Rolling eyes

Again, they were kids. It's not like they didn't think "woah wtf is that kid doing!" There was a long awkward pause, and he did play it off like he was just retarded anyway. I know people that have done some weird things before and nothing bad came to them.

You must live in a pretty boring world.

Cirque du Freak....

I finished book... 9 a few months ago... but my school's library hasn't gotten any more so I'm just like... "whatever"
I skipped the thrid book b/c it was checked out when I went to the library... I was... just a little confused.

The books... so simplistic and easy to read. I don't like the way the timeline was set up... how he ages so much faster than a regular person. I want to see how his family is doing. And to know how old he would be if he stayed a human or how old he is currently. The books are easy to read and the plot is half-way decent... I mean, when they books first popped up at my school everyone was screaming Cirque du Freak and I was like "..." because I had already read them.
The characters aren't that... stable. It seems to me like the author bends them to fit the situation instead of the characters bending the situation themselves... Yes... and they characters are immature and fairly underdeveloped... like... when that one guy died (will not type name due to memory and spolier issues)... I didn't really miss him or care, even though he was one of the main characters.

And whenever the characters speak... whats with the "!"'s? too much drama, it would be better with a more serious note when the characters are like "Two of you will die!!" it would be better if it were like, "Two of you will die..." with a mourning tone intsead of sinister (especially if the character is "good")

The books... could be better.

Much better

But they were enjoyable.
Since when does a fantasy book have to be realistic? IMAGINATION! Rolling eyes
I remember seeing this argument somewhere on the IMDb. It's used over and over for crappy fatasy films (That's just a statement. Nothing implied there).

Yes, fantasy does have to be realistic, but not to the extent that normal life is. Hmm...maybe realistic isn't the right word. Believable, yeah, that'll do.
I found that the way the kids reacted was not exactly believable. Yes, it's fantasy, but so is Lord of the Rings (I'd have picked Harry Potter, but there're problems where girls are concerned with the first few books). In that, the characters act the way they would do in a situation.

Oooh..whatever, I don't even know what I'm saying any more.

Yeah...I live in a boring part of the world. But I don't see what that has to do anything.

I DEFINITELY agree with that. These books would make excellent movies. The books are short enough that they could probably crop it to 2-3 books per movie. That and you wouldn't have to worry about the Harry Potter syndrome(cutting out all important parts and adding in some random dragon fight that never happened) since there's plenty of the story that doesnt really matter too much. I would hope they would just fit it all in, anyway... Uneasy

the movie rights have allready been bought... so it's now up to the movie company to see if they will actually go through with it... it has been said that if there are going to be movies.. they are going to do 3 books per film...
i just hope they fucking do it

darren himself said he'd like to see johnny depp portray larten... and i so fucking agree with that <3
