I just recently read the book and thought it was enchanting. It was so good that at a certain point I thought I was really a geisha! (Weird, because I'm a dude... ) Yes, it's going to be a movie but it was a book first! Ha!

I really liked it as well. Everyone in my family read it first, so I was kind of wondering what the heck it was (my family rarely agrees on the time of day, let alone on books) but all my worries were unfounded. I never got so drawn in that I thought I was a geisha, but I was certain that it was an autobiography. To find that it was written by a white American guy--yeah, that was kind of a shock. It's a REALLY good book, that's for sure.
(And I love your little Colette thing at the bottom...^.^ Actually, I love Colette, period...^.^) _________________ Disgaea's Overlords Dance in Worlds Beyond Infinity while Mifuyus Magical Multiplying Mole reads the epic Chronicles of Yord, and you learn that your Craving for Finding a Heart of Snow is Taboo in VG unless you dare undertake The Combine of Sin... |

The American guy raped the geisha's story. What happened was that he interviewed a real geisha and she gave him her story (on the terms that he didn't publish her name in the book, but he did so she sued for tonnes of money 8D). However, he twisted a lot of people and events a lot. Some of the cruel people in that book, she says, were actually really kind to her in real life, and became some of her best friends.
In fact, the American author's rendition of her story pissed her off so much, she decided to release an autobiography. _________________

Ooooh...not nice. That does explain it, though. I'm not sure now whether I'm more mad about the guy's writing, or happy that she's releasing an autobiography I can go read... _________________ Disgaea's Overlords Dance in Worlds Beyond Infinity while Mifuyus Magical Multiplying Mole reads the epic Chronicles of Yord, and you learn that your Craving for Finding a Heart of Snow is Taboo in VG unless you dare undertake The Combine of Sin... |

So did I. I'm not entirely sure what I thought about it, but it was definitely, unequivocally, a beautifully made movie. |

As much as I don't like to admit it, you're right.
...But wasn't that in the "Translator's Note" at the beginning of the book? I may be wrong, though. And the names "Sayuri" and "Chiyo" were made up, according to the American guy. I'm not doing much research and I'm not making sense at all, so go ahead and destroy my point. _________________ When we both rule the world, we will be entertained by the little things. |

Okay, so it was kinda twisted, but....IT WAS STILL GREAT! ^_^
It was absolutley enchanting, and after seeing the movie, I realized just how perfectly it was cast. These people were just how I imagined them, and Hatsumomo quickly became one of my favorite characters, being only beaten out by Mameha and of course Sayuri!
I don't usually cry when I read, but then ending was so sad, when you find out about the truth and I....I thought it was so wonderful! _________________

I think it's one of those books that you have to have an interest in the topic to like it, you know? _________________
