Shouldn't the pony be white, and have a blonde mane/tail?

Back to topic:

I classify Emo as any song that includes the words: cut, knives, heart, bleed, tears, etc, ad infinitum.
I'm glad I missed the whole Emo thing, being too old upon it's inception to 'get' it. It was a close call though. I was a goth in high school. *sigh* I think it's something you never outgrow...

Anyway, cheer up emokids ^_^

Emo is short for Emotional...
That doesn't mean that it stands for younger peole who die there hair and cry about life! Its more about talking about reality, and what happens in everyday in life. Sure, some emo artist cry about life, use hair dye, and wear tight clothing, but take a look at country! All the do is talk about farming or there favorite bar, and wear wranglers and cowboy boots, and hat! It gets old listening to people who have no idea about certain genres..

^ Except Country/Western singers are slightly more credible as human beings.

Ohsnapz.

The "Emo" genre is the bastard child of "Indie" and "Pop Rock". That's how you can explain the terrible vocals (From Indie's side) And sucky/Sub-par intsrumentals (From Pop Rocks' side). The lyrics, however, are the result of severe autism.

When did "Punk" become the in thing anyway? I thought "Punk" was an insult to whoever was being called it, it was usually used to point out a rebellious degenerate that would probably die of aids in a dumpster from my understanding.

Kindof like being Called a Psuedo Intellectual....^_^

Do you guys know anything about music? Punk is a genre a music. GC is Punk. Hawthorn Heights is screamo. MCR didn't start emo, i don't know where guys are getting your information, but most of the things you have said about defining emo are incorrect. Who in the world thought Linkin Park was emo? Yes, there lyrics seem so, but the genre is Alternative Rock.

Clearly you don't. Please turn around and come back the way you came.

The Ramones, New York Dolls, those are punk. Punk died in the 70s. Pop punk is a genre, but barely, and is an insult to the term punk to begin with.

Punk is also a style, I suppose, but not one that comes remotely close to GC or anything else referred to as "punk" these days. Pop all the way.

I give you credit for knowing that MCR didn't start emo (I always thought Death Cab for Cutie did myself).

Hawthorne Heights definetly isn't screamo, alot of screamo bands' vocalists actually have nice voices (When they aren't screaming, obviously), whereas Hawthorne Heights has proven it lacks so.

How is Linkin Park Alternative? They're just whiney, like Coldplay.

I know a hell of a lot about music. Not emo. Say it with me now: muuuuuuuusiiiic.

Like has been said, Punk was a damn good genre which originated in London in the seventies. It died shortly after, for the most part. Granted there are some good bands carrying on the torch, such as The Exploited, but Emo has very little to do with real Punk.

Sorry, but you can't turn around on a computer! By the way, music isn't just about catergorizing it into genres. I'm sure you listen to alot of music, but do you actually appreciate it? Have you had something happen in your life that you can relate to in a song? If you have, then you know music is much more than genres, and cool guitar riffs. I play and sing for my band, and we do our lyrics from past experiences. I don't know if your just a know it all, but you defenitly don't know your music straight!!!

Scathing.

You know, he's right, I've never appreciated any piece of music I've ever heard, or empathised with lyrics, or indeed had human feelings, being the soulless automaton that I am.

Indeed, music isn't about splitting things into genres, but we do that anyway subconsciously anyway for easy mental access.

Other than that I was a little confused as to what you point was, maybe I just misread.
I'm also in a band, making me an authority on everything. *Sarcasm meter explodes*

Most people do write songs about past experiences, and that's ok. Write what you know, etc. But what most people's problem with Emo bands is that they all seem to sing about the same thing. Which is tolerable, if you just ignore it, but the sheer crappiness of the lyrics makes it something you just can't ignore. They're stuffed with meaningless metaphors and imagery that appeal to 'the kids' because it sounds dark poetic. When to anyone with more experience with music listening can tell most of it is bland and just a rehash of all other emo that's gone before.

A sweeping generalisation, I know, but true of all the emo I've heard.
This is a fun topic for discussion ^_^
