I stopped reading after awhile 'cause I got bored. But I get the gist.

You wanna come in here like a snot nosed brat, bitching about the true emotions of music and how it's not about genres? Then why are you here discussing what genre bands do and don't fall into? No, it isn't about genres, but guess what, bands from a single genre DO have stylistic similarities. OMG WTF NO WAY!


Am I a know it all? No. About certain things perhaps, wanna know about Faster Pussycat or TUFF, I can fill you in on everything from where each member learned their instrument to what they like to have for breakfast. But ask me about pop punk and I could really care less because unlike some people, I'm not enough of a masochist to sit around reading about what Benji finds attractive in a girl. Don't care.

I AM, however, familiar with their music and careers because it interests me. Music [b]is[/b] a business, whether you want it to be one or not, and you can't ignore that just because you don't want to think artists might do something just for money and not their supreme artistic vision.

You came prancing in defending emo, and then you say genres don't matter? It's not about the genre, dumbass, it's the music those bands create. Three little letters are a hell of a lot easier to refer to than "that collection of musicians who create songs about emotions and real life events". Emo. Fuckin' emo. It's all about convenience, because fuckin' hell, there has to be a way to organize the record stores or tell someone "I like _____" without a long drawn out explanation.

No one is trying to piss all over artistic expression or individuality by calling something rock or punk or jazz or blues. Jazz is jazz. Rock is rock. And there will ALWAYS be overlap between the genres because they've evolved and been influenced by each other. Punk, however, has the distinction of being a very definite scene in NYC and London with a core purpose (no matter how juvenile that purpose may have been). For being so high and mighty about meaning and value, how can you call MTV garbage punk? Punk stood for something, whether you feel it's important or not, and calling GC punk is just making it an empty label of catchy hooks and good promotion.


I come on strong about such issues because I [i]do[/i] care about music, as anyone who's been here more than a month can easily tell you. Most important thing in my life. Maybe if you spent more time learning the things you think you know and putting some thought into what you say instead of lashing out with nothing but whining and no actual response to the evidence presented, people would be more inclined to listen to you.



Until then, I'm closing this because emo has been defined, and the grumpy kid is just going to come back with a tortured soul response tinted with arrogance, and no one needs that. We're not gonna lay down and lick your balls just because you say you know a lot and care about music. Take that somewhere else. Or take the attitude down a notch and learn to respond in a mildly pleasant manner with something other than "you have no idea what you're talking about. I do. I'm right."
