I've been going to another art site (manga/sketch oreinted) and I've been noticing that people commented more and I felt sudden urge to comment too. I first thought that it was because there were only 500 members, so it was a tight community. But I think it has to do more with the fact that the artists' description is shown underneath the thumbnails. People feel the urges to reply to those desriptions, sometimes, there are questions you can answer, sometimes they're artists' own criticism the viewer agrees with. Sure, people can read those descriptions when they click on to the thumbnail, but showing the description outside beside the thumbnail helps eliminate the barrier between the viewer and the picture. Also, I think that those comments underneath would make the galleries look better, it's not just an ugly juxtaposation of thumbnails anymore. Example Instead of having 25 thumbnails on one page, and everyother page after that, we can have something like 20 thumbnails with its decription next to it. (If it's too long, it will be cut off, with ...) This goes out to artists' galleries too. Example
Also if this system was instated, people would take more time to write the descriptions, which is always a good thing. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

My opinion:
Picture description should be a required field anyway when submitting a pic. Did I ever mention that I generally HATE seeing a great picture without a description alongside it?
However, for the sake of easier viewing, description 'previews' should be limited to about 100 characters.
You know me, my usual descriptions border on novel-length _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

100 characters? I was thinking 200. That makes a nice paragraph. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

I dont see the description working well in thumbnails. Maybe I'll add it as a mouseover tooltip later. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

It sounds really cool, maybe having a small description appear underneath the thumbnails and a bigger one when you click it. Strata I also think that descriptions should be requiered but the problem is most people would just write a couple of words.... _________________

Or we could make it a view option.
View:
- Text Links Only
- Standard Thumbnails
- Descriptive Thumbnails
"Standard" thumbnails is the current five-column view (typically 25 per page), "Descriptive" thumbnails could be a single-column view with the thumbnails listed vertically, and excerpts from the descriptions shown adjacent to them (comparable to current layout of story title/description links, or like in brianhjh's link). _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

i like the mouse over description a whole lot better than I like the little describtion beside it or under it. Why? Because I rarely read the describtions of the pictures, maybe if someone scrolled out the page with a ghey comment or something, but rarely if ever.
Mouse over is the lazy man's detailing. and I think it might work a little better. : D _________________
