I don't see how it would be programmed.
and for people who already frequent other forums, they don't read our rules because they're similar. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |

People who get in trouble because they haven't read the rules... Well, sorry to say but they bring it on themselves. It's not as if the rules were hard to find, written in the arcane language of Legaleze or incomplete. |

Good idea, but impossible to implement. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

If I recall, doesn't Elfwood have this idea already? I don't think it's impossible _________________ |

Yes, but Elfwood has been on a pretty steep decline lately.
Plus, something like a quiz might scare away people who would actually follow the rules and be good posters. _________________ a jelly calypso castle in the sky |

Maybe somewhere in the rules it could say something like "To ensure you've get the rules please click on the period at the end of this sentence" And only then would you be allowed to register? I've seen several other places do such, so, eh. Just a thought. |

Problem is, no matter what, it's pretty easy to figure out how to move on without reading the rules. Soon as they don't see an "accept" button, they'll either skim the last paragraph to see why or send a hundred emails asking how to get past the rules.
And I loathe the quiz thing. Before I'd even heard much about Elfwood, I left the site as soon as I saw the quiz. Ghey. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Well um...*thinks for a second* Maybe there CAN be an accept button, but if you skip over the rules and just click on "accept," It'll say "Hey, you didn't read the rules. Go back and read them now." |

All the tricks in the world are not going to make people read the rules. It'll make people try to find the "trick" and get by as quickly as possible. Not read the rules, and even less try and understand them. |

Maybe if there was a way to put a time limit in the rules and if people pressed I ACCEPT fast then the time limit starts over. _________________ |

Come on now.
The problem is not ignorance of the rules, it's the inability to follow them. If the problem was that they simply didn't know what the rule was, every problem would be fixed with a single reminder. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. What fallen said. It's not that people don't agree to the rules (you have to click an "I agree" button upon registration, after all), it's that they don't follow through. They forget, willfully disobey, and/or just plain disregard the rules they clicked "I agree" to.
That's why we have to enforce it on a human level. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

How would that make people read and obey the rules? |

In theory, a time delay would indicate that they didn't just zip to the end and click the button.
In practice, though, you can get people click on an "I agree" button for anything, but whether they actually agree is a wholly independent matter.
Just because they click doesn't mean they intend to actually abide by them. All the tales of thieves here and abroad... those people clicked the same "I agree" button, but did they have any intention of actually abiding by the terms given?
No, they were basically juts lying through their teeth, taking shortcuts through their registration just so they could get some stuff online. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

You could always send them back to the sandbox and make them do 10 more posts or something. That would teach them the rules. But then again they might decide not to come back to the site at all. _________________

And if they do, then it's their loss much more so than ours. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Your right. Most of the ones who break the rules do so on purpose and don't care about everyone else on the site. It doesn't matter if they leave or not. _________________
