First make sure they're in jpg, gif, or png format. If they aren't, open them in some kind of image program (photoshop, paint, etc.) and go to file->save as. There should be some kind of drop down menu that lists formats. Pick jpg, gif, or png and click save.

If they are in one of those formats and are just too big (which if they're 600pixels, they should be resized anyway for easy viewing) find an option that says size/scale/something like that. In photoshop, it's "image->image size" Resize the image to be no bigger than about 600 pixels in width or height.

Yeah, my scanner is gay like that too, whenever I scan, it scans my s**t, really REALLY big. So I always have to make it smaller, if you go to Photoshop, there's a transform thing under like Edit or something, for me it's cntrl+t, which might be like apple+t for you, or something, and I can make it whatever size I want, you can also use the crop tool if you wanted, I suppose.

You know you can change that, right? It's all a matter of how many pixels per inch you have it set to scan at. If you don't want it to scan huge, scan it at a lower ppi setting. I scan at 300 or better for quality reasons, though.
