!art Storage!

I've searched for this topic and don't believe it's been brought up before. Even though, there are tons of FAC members, I'm almost willing to bet that there are two things that we all have in common...a love for art and....TONS OF EXTRA ARTS SUPPLIES!!!! The whole idea of a person having more art supplies than he or she could ever in a single lifetime is an extremely exciting and scary idea to me at the same time.

While having so much art supplies can really blow your mind...for ex. like a kid in a candy store..it also offers much opportunity to the art supplies owner b/c he has so much medium to work w/to create whatever he or she desires.

The very scary part of having too much art supplies really depends on what your preferences are for daily organization. If you are a person who can live in a mess and still find everything he or she needs for school or daily life w/out getting frustrated b/c your room is a mess...daily organization probably isn't a problem for you. But, if you're like me and get absolutely royaly pissed b/c your room gets messed up and you can't find what you are looking for...a lot of extra art supplies could just be another thorn in your side b/c you lack...ORGANIZATION!!!!

Now I'm not going to lecture anyone on having a messy room, but I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas about organizing art supplies in general?

*helpful tips that I've found*

-I have found that using my old makeup bag to hold my prismacolor markers has been quite effective in keeping them all together.
Found at local Walmart or Target etc. - don't buy a new item save yourself the cash and go for the clearance ailse.

-Also for the people that really don't have a desk of any sort to keep art supplies on should consider a roll-away storage unit for under your bed. If your bed is too short consider getting bed risers:

These roll-away storage units are probably the best investment I've made for my art supplies organization. They are even better if you can get them w/wheels.
These roll-away storage units are also at your local Walmart etc.

The only reason I keep suggesting Walmart is b/c in my town....Walmart is basically our village square...you see everyone there...that's what I get for living in southern IL. <_<

Please if anyone has other suggestions feel free to post...if you have pictures too please post!

I'm poor. I don't have the money to buy extra art supplies, much less anything to carry them with. Especially if you're a heavy painter like me. :9

I cleared out a few dresser drawers specifically for art and school supplies.

There needs to be a Martha Stewartish type magazine or website specifically for art people. Not crafty people, but serious art people, listing everything from product analysis to organization to tips and tricks. If there is, I'd like to know about it.

I do a lot of my pictures in color pencil so they always find their way around the house. If there is one thing I have learned to do is keep them anywhere away from small kids. I have a Thousand blue pencils but not a red one in sight. I then have to buy a whole new pack and they end up getting lost too.

Chest that holds all of my 9x12 inch paper pads, I use Strathmore Bristol and Canson watercolor block the most.

Some of you may have seen this before. I keep all my drawings in a wardrobe, using two drawers. this is the first drawer, and the drawings get piled on after being scanned and dated. I don't like doing work bigger than 9x12 paper because then it has be be put somewhere else. The first section is colored pencil works, the second is markers, the third is pastels.

The second drawer that you don't see here consists of gouache, watercolor, and oil/acrylic.

and I never bought any these containers, my house is just filled with useless crap. We have containers for everything.

I keep most of my art supplies in a fishing tackle box that I actually did purchase at Wal-Mart. It's just like buying the fancy schmancy art boxes except you're not spending an arm and a leg on it.

The box I bought is basically like this with a few minuscule differences. I like the different compartments for storing different types of art supplies. I have exacto knives in one slot, charcoal pencils in another, acrylic paint in another, etc.

Aside from that, I actually put most of the stuff that I use often in a Zip-Loc baggie. It sits on the bottom of my bookeshelf in my living room, next to where I draw. It's not a really good idea for organization, but it's easy accessibility for me.

I always thought you used pastel chalk
Never thought pastel pencils existed........ hmmm it sounds as a nice media, I may try it sometime...

I have my graphitte pencils and pens in a pencil case, the watercolour pencils in their original box and the erasers and sharpeners on top of my desk.
Pretty simple...

I keep my pencils/pens in a pencilcase and my drawing pad lies somewhere under my bed. Any half-decent drawings are either still in thier respective pad, or in a plastic folder, again under the bed.

This summer I'm going to organize all my stuff like you, Brianhjh. All your photos of neatly organized supplies makes me promise myself I will do that... one of these days. First I have to weed out all the stubby pencils and empty paint tubes.

I own two cats.. which means, I get a lot of empty cans from their food, that's what I use as storage, mainly for my ink-stuff, I own coloredpencils, various pastells, acryl colors.. etc. but they are all in a little wooden locker from Ikea... yeah for Ikea.. I only need my ink-, artistbrushpens and my pencils often, so I keep them on my lighttable in these cat-food tin cans, looks odd.. but well they work for me *LOL*

I'm quite possibly the exact opposite of Brian.

Given that all my classes add required materials pretty much every week....I've got a lot of useless junk. Or rather, supplies that I don't particularly enjoy using (lots of ink stuff, for example). I just pile it around. S'all about the piles.

I know where everything is. Except old art. I lose track of that real fast. Spent 20 minutes pulling my hair out trying to find a drawing from 6 months ago for my painting prof. Ugh.


Buuuuut organization fails me. Barely controlled madness rocks. Psh, storage.
