Here's the deal: While I keep in shape taking four miles walks and walking around with 30lbs on my back, my dad is might afeared that I'm going to become overweight like my dearest brother. While this is impossible (because I have a fast metabolism and excerize self-control) I thought that I could come to y'all for a suggestion of sports. Here are the stats.

~I was in soccer for four years and quit because my coach was a prick with a capital "P" and I've never been a really good team person.

~I was in swimming for six years but quit because doing 1000 and 2000 after a while, day in and day out for an hr and a half gets reeaaally old.

~I was in fencing. Unforunetely, it was one of those things that I did not "click" with like others. I loved the spontantiety and civility of it, but it was not my bag.

I'm thinking of doing self defense, specifically escrima or karate. I love action, I love fighting people and though I have a feeling that I AM going to get my ass kicked (which is fair, I'll be a n00b after all) I believe it's something I can stick to for a while and learn a lot from.

Well help me. If I take martial arts, advise me as to which ones are more suitable than not and why. I want to see why I should be doing something or not.

What about track and feild? If you're not fast, you could throw the shot, discus, or javalin. Maybe you'd be good at hurtles or high jumping. *shrugs* That's a great sport. It's got something for almost everyone.
Or perhaps softball? I don't really care for that one. I'm a soccer person. But so many people love it, so obviously, it's a good game to play.

I don't know much about martial arts. My best friend did it for a while, but she ended up quitting after about a month or so because it was to hard. *shrugs again* And she's not a wussy either. Wink Soooooooo, yeah.

Hey, I taken martial arts for years now. I personally speciallize in Ti-Quan-Do, know some Hipekito, and am already pretty adept at wrestling.
I've also observed plenty of other forms from the new instructors. Anyway, if I were you, I'd avoid anything ending in -bo, cuz it's probably only good for exersize videos. Ju-Jitsu and Kung-Fu, at least I think, are usually alot showier than other fighting styles(relying as much on intimidation as with the actual strikes), but that stuff requires a-LOT of flexability and whatever gimnastics are.Oh, and stuff w/ jitsu usually has a lot of minipulating a fight(whatch an episode of Naruto for more info). Personally, I would recomend Ti-quan-do(which translated, literally means"the art of kicking and punching"). I know from experience that you won't begin fighting until you get some sparing gear, and they will only put you up agianst guys of similar weight, height,rank,etc(and will increase in dificulty w/ each new belt rank).

Believe it or not, I AM considering track. I used to have a helluva endurance, but that stopped when I quit swimming. Nevertheless, I do like to run...Unfortunetely, like swimming, the idea of running around a circular track day in and out just doesn't appeal to me.

But I do like the sound of hurtles. :)

Ju-jitsu I considered for a while, but it didn't really make me go wow. My dad's considering signing me up for tae-kwon-do, and while it seems interesting and definetely valuble, it too doesn't exactly wow me. I'm going to have to consider it, though, because tae-kwon-do is everywhere. Escrima, is not. There's two types of escrima, the one with sticks and the one with just yourself and I'm strongly considering the latter...

What about Kickboxing? I actually was really interested in persuing it myself, but never got into it. It'll certainly keep you moving and you get to punch [i]and[/i] kick people. :D

There's also Kendo which is like a Japanese version of fencing. I think it's a lot more interesting than fencing though. It's basically samurai swordsmanship.

Those are my lame suggestions. Very Happy

Martial arts, eh? I did Judo for a little while, and only quit it becuase my true passion for soccer happened to be on the same day.

Judo is good, teaches you flooring, and pins. You'll get alot from it, fighting to get the right position to floor someone before holding them there for 25 seconds. Also, I'd reccomend kudo, a mix of judo, karate and Ti-Quan-Do. *shrugs* Still, I'd always push for you to take up soccer again. Look for different coaches, since he was probably wrong. And if he was right, prove him wrong. I'm only saying this because I think soccer/football is a religion, and I live by its code.

Hope this has been vaguely useful.

I did tae kwon do for 4 years, its all base around defence and respect. When I was doing it there were three areas and some self- defence throws [but they were from ju-jitsu]

[b]1.[/b] Patterns: Just learning a pattern and its movements for a grading, it is supposed to help with technique and stance and s**t like that

[b]2.[/b] Sparring: Well its just basically lower contact fighting, but gets you used to fighting if yo are ever in that situation

[b]3.[/b] Destruction: This is where I excelled Cool , you are thought how to do different hand and foot attacks and then yo have to break 1 inch thick wood boards, I found it easy, when all the adults there struggled with it. I could break 3 boards, I think Wink

90% of it is kicks, there are more kicking attacks than hand. OWNED.

Again, Tae-Kwon Do has struck me as interesting...and it's also very common. I can find a dojo basically anywhere, which is great. Sparring is what I want to learn. I love to fight...even if it means getting my ass kicked, it's a great rush.

I took Karate for a year but it ended up being too repetitive and I quit. There's more about stance and learning a serie of movements than anything else (at least in Shotokan Karate)
Very little fighting and it's not even with contact when I wanted to be able to actually hit the opponent.

I think you should give a try at Tae-kwon-do


There are other activities such as dance (depends which kind) that can be an interesting option. I didn't think it was hard until I went to see/participate at one class with them. It's pretty good for you as well, even if people don't consider it as a sport.

Tae kwon do can be a lot to do with stances and Patterns in depends on which branch you go to, there is one group in Ireland who are almost total sparring which isn't the best as you develop no technigue and sparring is not important in grading until green belt [goin for the black belt i think you need to spar two opponents]. Tae Kwon do is not the roughest material art, as self control is very important in it. I would recommend joining a Tae Kwon Do group who have an I.T.F. [International Tae kwon do Federation] crest on their Dobok as this is the one which General Choi himself made and it is taught the way he developed it and before his death he improved it and made it more efficient.

All the aspects of Tae Kwon do are important [Patterns, Sparring and Destruction] for gradings but you will not do sparring and destruction until you have learn the basic movements.

I think that you would enjoy Tae Kwon Do, i did take karate for a little while( I know it's not exactly that same thing) and i enjoyed it. Now i am trying out for Bowling, how odd is that? You would probably be really good at it! Very Happy

i think skateboarding is a good sport. you develope strong calf muscles and good reflexes. you can also choose whether to just push around to places or do kickflips down steps or lazer flips on funboxes. it builds up your strength and reflexes while being fun at the same time.

I did karate for a few years but quit causeit got bnoring, later my friend took me to thai boxing classes which quite good kept me quite fit but I had to quit that too Sad . Right now I do snowboarding it keeps you in an extremely great shape, you exercise every part of your body. Only draw back is depending where you are you might not be able to go frequently. Otherwise skateboarding works also same techniques and can be done anywhere. Smile!

Mm. Well. Skiing, maybe? It can be a solo thing and doesn't get monotonous the way swimming does. Though.. I guess it might not be all that feasible depending on where you live.
