Yeah, I'll get to that group in a little bit. Sketching for my diptych paintings, figuring out how to turn Brian Hamman [maytag] into an acceptable Hades.

I like to complain, so yay for most of that list being utter shit.

Franz Ferdinand

Ugh. So so terrible. You know, when they first had that video that looked like every other psedu-collage animation, I equated them immediately with Jet for suckitude. And as it so happened, it was right around the time everyone was sucking them off too for that "are you gonna be my girl" disaster.

I wanna know the precise moment that "they don't sound like everyone else" became the same thing as "they r teh roxxorz!". Because that's all there is to Franz Ferdinand, the fact they don't sound like Britney or Korn or Good Charlotte. Good for them, but when it comes to rock or any mainstream music for that matter, know what they remind me of? Those 80s pop bands that had maybe one hit 'cause it was a little different than all the other songs, so even though they weren't a very good band, people loved them 'cause it was different.

Their music is....yeeeeeeah. Congrats, you passed 8th grade guitar. W00t! Find a guy with a nervous twitch and you've got the drummer covered. Peter Murphy with a head cold, there's your frontman. And they try too hard. That "look, aren't we weird?" thing really doesn't work when you go out of your way to dress different, make "unusual" videos, and are basically marketed as "that other white meat".

And they look like 'tards from a special ed prep school, they need to work on that. No one likes loser guys in loser bands.

does not approve

Clay Aiken

He's the female Kelly Clarkson. ^_^ Seriously, though, I almost have to like Clay for the single fact he more than adequately PROVED, beyond the shadow of a doubt, how ridiculous American Idol is. First, fatass wins out of pity, in true reality show style, but all those people going "Aww, you're fat Sad" don't buy records, preteen girls who haven't developed gaydar do.

Add to that the fact all the "good" songs go to pretty boys, so Clay gets the marketable garbage while tubby gets leftovers that no one else wanted to sing. And Clay succeeds from the delusional marriage dreams of little girls while lard ass fades away. American idol my ass.

Clay himself is a tolerable karaoke singer, but, well, you know how I loathe anything that promotes raising singers to anything beyond that. And he looks like a fuckin' elf. Slap some bells on him and put him back with the mall santa where he belongs.

does not approve

System of a Down

Every time I bash on them, I get 80% of the male population swinging from their balls like a fuckin' jungle gym, so I'll keep it short.

Their musical ability is tolerable, save for a few particulars. The vocals tend to be the generic sound that 90% of bands have these days, very...unrefined whiny. Like pull a random jackass off the street and teach him to carry a tune. No developed tone or range, comes off feeling very flat. Could be ok, but it takes a lot of work to be able to tell any of them apart, and the point of a band is to be different and have a signature sound, not be mediocre with everyone else.

I called them Slipknot Lite for awhile. All that "we're so brooding, ooh, come to me angst ridden 20-something boys" without the incredibly lame masks and evil shit. But musically I guess they're a step above.

Nothing that will stand the test of time, though.

is indifferent

Country music

Gonna have to be more specific, too many variations. In general I'd say it sucks, but I'll need to know exactly what country you're talking about in order to tell you how badly.

does not approve

techno

Again, extremely vague. Techno that has drifted into the mainstream or purely the crap little glow stick waving pill poppers listen to while they try not to pass out? Techno is a bit different than most of the other ones 'cause it's all about composition and arrangement, given that a lot of it is done digitally to begin with.

It's the collage of music. Whole bunch of sounds layered together, all depends on the skill of the person doing it.

I don't like it, as I don't like much visual art collage either, but some of it's ok talent wise.

is indifferent

Steve Miller Band

Ya know, it's a good song, but if I ever here The Joker again when I'm not buzzed and singing along in a sports car, it'll be too soon. Enough already.

However, it's no comparison to Abracadabra. Come on, a decade of great music, and we hit the 80s and we get "abra-abra-cadabra, I wanna reach out and grab ya". Eeeeeesh.

But, other than that little bump that most legends seemed to hit at least once in the 80s and 90s, great band. Classic. Fly Like An Eagle. I don't think I need to break down their musical skill.

And, back on the subject of SoaD, compared to things like this and some of the other groups that have been on this list...it's startling. Why do all the bands sound like this right now? No one sings anymore. At all. It's all the same flat average dude from the neighborhood sound, measured purely in how well they can scream as far as who's "good". It's like Duff McKagan trying to sing back in the early 90s. Sure he can carry a tune and is mildly pleasant to listen to, but he just sounds like some guy from the office singing in the lunch room.

Let's get some singers back, dammit. It's probably just another side effect of Kurt Cobain DIY syndrome. Just because you can carry a tune does not make you a frontman. OWNED.

approves

Toad The Wet Sprocket

I can't be bothered to check them out. They're from the 90s, 98% chance I'll think they suck.

Beck

Heh, I hate talking about Beck almost as much as I hate talking about Radiohead, because it always comes with this faux emo, "I'm so deep" fanbase that refuses to listen to reason.

Technical skills are what they are, overall musically....I wouldn't lose any sleep if all the albums mysteriously vanished from the earth.

is indifferent

Collective Soul

Another 90s band where I really just...don't care. The 90s were very blah. Aside from the 80s fading out until 93, there was Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, Placebo, NIN, Smashing Pumpkins, rhcp (I'd debate this one, but...well, a couple people here just wouldn't listen) a handful of comebacks, and that was about it. Everything else was either second best variations of those or just crappy.

I don't know much about Collective Soul's influences, but I'd be surprised if they weren't born out of hair bands, as many of the 90s groups were. There's some great pictures of all the trendy "we're so serious" groups in poodle bands in '89. But anyway, there's a lot of LA Guns sound to them, only with less difficulty in the playing. They're one of those background bands, where you think "yeah, ok, but why should I listen to you when I could just listen to [insert artists they were influenced by]".

They lack that difference that makes them worth listening to, they've just taken little bits of various classics and glued it all together. It makes a decent end product, but nothing revolutionary or overly unique. Just a regurgitation of what we already have.

does not approve

Ted Nugent

You can't knock the motor city madman. Pretty much all my gripes with him aren't even musical, they're with things he's done or said. Although the little verbal catfight he had going with Rikki Rockett a few years ago was good fun to follow, and if nothing else, he's always entertaining. Damn Yankees ain't the best in the world, but it's good enough.

'Sides, if you bash him, he'll hunt you down and put your head on his wall.

approves

The Offspring

. . . the Southern California punk band. = automatic FAIL. Especially since there's nothing punk about them besides the typical pop-punk qualities. Lack of vocal ability, boring guitar riffs, same bass lines every modern "punk" band uses, all of which makes these catchy little fast songs that are rough compared to britney but nowhere near punk.

I don't even know how people like this, or anyone, can listen to the offspring, sum41, blink182, etc. and say with a straight face that they're anything like the Ramones or New York Dolls in any way, shape, or form. It's ridiculous.

So. They call themselves punk, so even if they aren't as bad as good charlotte, I still don't approve.

does not approve

Adult Swim

I don't watch adult swim because I 1. don't have cable and 2. don't particularly like cartoons.

Tool/A Perfect Circle

Sevendust
