The Skyranger circled above the arid landscape. From the view screens, Will could see the large alien craft below, the desert sun reflecting off its smooth surface.

"Captain?" question Red, "what the hell are they doing all the way out here?"

"No idea," replied Will, "but we're about to find out."

The craft touched down on the dry soil, the turbines kicking up clouds of sand and dust. As the gate swung open, Will ordered Mairi and Red out first, securing the immediate area before being followed by Brian and Avy.

"Over there!" called Brian, pointing in the direction of a number of gray creatures making a run back to the ship. All three were gunned down in their tracks, bodies rolling down the dune.

"I don't get it," said Avy, crouching down in front of the dead Sectiods, "what could these bug-eyed little creeps want with sand and rocks?"

"Probably testing the environment," answered Red, "reports have been coming in a lot recently. Aliens collecting samples from different areas on earth. My guess is they are seeing which areas are worth invasion, or even research to better adapt themselves to our conditions."

"Pretty scary stuff, if you think about it," said Brian, "its like..."

He trailed off, gun hanging limply by his side.

"Like what?" said Red, turning around, "Brian? Like what?... Brian?"

"Get away from him!" yelled Mairi, yanking Red to the ground as Brian raised his weapon and fired at where he had been not more than an instant earlier. Swinging his gun around, Brian fired into the Skyranger, plasma searing through several soldiers as they tumbled down the ramp.

"What the hell are you doing!?" exclaimed Avi.

Brian turned to Avi, staring at him with glazed eyes, his expression blank and emotionless. Drawing his knife, he dove for Avi, slashing the soldier across his cheek. Brian's body suddenly jerked backwards with a grunt as Will brought the butt of his gun crashing down over his head. He lay prone in the sand, unconscious but still breathing.

As Will helped Avi to his feet Red began shaking uncontrollably, dropping to his knees as with a wild look in his eyes.

"Its inside me," he said, his voice panicked, "I can feel it inside my head. Oh God, get it out! It's my head!"

He ripped at his hair, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried to will the presence out of him.

"I've got to get it out!" he screamed, pulling his sidearm and, to the horror of all around him, placing it to his temple, "I'VE GOT TO GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD!!!"

A sudden gunshot made everyone jump. The pistil slipped from Red's fingers as he fell forward into the sands, coughing violently as he wretched the contents of his stomach onto the ground. All turned to see Mairi lower her gun, a Sectiod lying dead about thirty yards away, a small orb still clutched in its fingers.

"Bastards are fucking with our minds," she said, helping Red into a sitting position, "I don't know how, but they made Brian kill his own mates and Red here almost kill himself. I've never seen them do this before."

"Everyone to the ship," said Will, "the sooner we flush these guys out the less chance they'll have of getting into our heads. I am [i]not [/i]backing down from this."

But even as he spoke more men began panicking as discord swept through the ranks. As several men dropped there weapons to run, one man yanked a grenade from his belt, pulling the pin and laughing maniacally as the fragmentation went off in his hand, blowing the hapless soldier to pieces and killing several others around him.

"Move it!" ordered Will, spurring the soldiers forward. Craig ran towards the alien craft, followed by Logan, Red, Mairi and Avi. But even as they neared the ship they were met with hails of gunfire as the creatures open fire. Mairi returned with a volley of plasma from her own weapon, catching one of the attackers in the head. His gun swung wildly as it fell, shots going off in all directions, one of which hit her squarely in the arm, severing it from her shoulder as a second pounded through her gut.

Mairi screamed in pain, falling to the ground as she clutched the burning stump of her arm. Logan ran to her side, dragging her out of harms way as the others pressed forward.

"Medic!" Logan yelled as Mairi's body shook violently, going into shock. Blood spurted from her mouth as she gagged and choked, and then her body went still. Cursing, Logan let Mairi slump lifelessly to the ground.

"Sir, we are in!" reported Craig, ducking inside the ship. He was followed by Avi and Red.

"Roger that," said Will as he met up with Logan, "Well be right behind you."

But no sooner had he and Logan got within ten feet of the ship than Logan began shacking uncontrollably, panic sweeping through his body. Will grabbed him and held him steady as the soldier spasmed violently. These damn aliens were going to destroy them all from the inside out.

Craig opened the door to the inner ship and quickly ducked back down again as plasma fire whizzed over his head.

"At least four of them," he said to Avi, "hand me a grenade."

Avi tossed a frag to Craig but Red caught it in mid air, his eyes blank and unreading as he reached for the pin.

"Oh s**t!" said Craig, pulling out his stun launcher. Both he and Avi were knocked to the ground as the blast wave flung Red's body across the deck. Startled, the aliens again opened fire, peppering the area with plasma scoring. Craig grabbed the grenade and tossed it across the deck, the explosion rocking the hull of the ship.

"How is he?" he asked as the surviving aliens retreated to the upper level of the ship.

"Fine," answered Avi, inspecting Red, "his necks pretty bruised, and he'll wake up with one hell of a hangover, but fine."

"How many are left?"

"Two, I think," said Avi as the door behind him slid open.

Both soldiers looked up to see Brian silhouetted in the open hatch, his eyes clouded white, the back of his head sticky with blood. Without a sound, he raised his weapon at the two of them, drawing a bead on Avi.

"Ghost him!" yelled Avi, ducking down as Craig fired a second stun bomb. The blast caught Brian full in the chest, knocking him back out of the hatch and into the desert sands.

"I love these things," said Craig, slapping a fresh clip into his rifle and heading up the gravity lift after the two fleeing aliens.

"Report," said Will, still trying to restrain a shaking Logan.

"We got the last of 'em," came Craig's reply. "Red was right when he said they were collecting samples for research. Got a whole laboratory up here. Whatever these guys are planning, it can't be pretty."

"Rodger that," said Will, "glean anything you can and then get yourselves back to the ship. The sooner we get the hell out of here the better."

Logan had become still in his arms, his breathing coming back under control. Around them, men lay dead and wounded, mostly from friendly fire. The damn things had turned everyone against each other, and themselves. How the hell were they supposed to fight an enemy they couldn't even see?

Standing, Will hailed as a second drop ship landed, engine turbines screaming, shielding his eyes from the sand it picked up. He helped Logan to his feet, picking up their weapons and hobbling back to the ship. The cleanup crews would have fun with this one, he was sure.

They're still there, however, I now have so many soldiers that I have split the command between the two main bases. Gray, Fallen, Denis, and myself are the four highest ranks (Dennis is a Commander, Fallen and I are Colonels, Gray is a Captain), through dumb luck more than anything. The game promotes soldiers according to how long they have lasted and how many troops are under them. I try to favor the FAC guys and kill off the namless grunts, hence those who have survived since almost the beginning are now higher ranked. You guys should also know that I don't record all my battles, just the more interseting ones. No one wants to read four stories in a row about a clean sweep of a crash site with three enemies neutralised and no casualties. I only bring in the higher ranks for major encounters or battles of note.

Oh, Red and Logan are still alive, by the way. As is Brian. The stun launcher does just that, [i]stun[/i].

(Also, I'm tempted to equip EVERYONE with stun launchers when fighting those damn Sectiods. They can leave your entire squad in complete chaos is a matter of no time. At least now I'll have a non-leathal way of dealing with those who get taken over, and I won't have to worry about them actually [i]killing [/i]anyone else.<_< )
