This is something that really annoys me... non artists assume that there's no work involved in art, that it's not challenging or difficult if you have some degree of talent. For instance, take a converstaion I had with my aunt last week...
My aunt: Mairi, do you think the art college is really that useful? I mean, sure it sounds like lots of fun. I'd love to sit around and do crafts all day! But what kid of REAl job can you get with it?
Me: Actually there are plenty of jobs around for artits?
Aunt: *laughs* Oh, really? like what? Tell me, what jobs are there?
Me: Well, for instance, there's fashion designing-that's art- people design costumes for movies. And there's lots of money for graphic design.
Aunt: they do graphic design at art college?
Me: Yes.
Aunt: oh, I didn't know that.
Now, how do you deal with people like this? _________________ |

Come on...she's family...that's makes her forgivable automatically...granted it doesn't make her any less annoying, but it only makes life harder if you don't
As for what to do about people like that...who knows
Maybe you should have an ironclad determination about your career choice in art and don't expect people to take you seriously when you say you're going to major in it.
Art really isn't known to be that dependable of career, but granted w/time perhaps the stereotype will pass <_<
Glad to hear someone is sticking w/their art major <_<
I've been taking a few classes to become an art teacher, but the more I learn about it...the less enthused I am about becoming an art teacher.
Teaching it just seems to take all the fun out it...just wasn't what I had expected. Guess, there are always other career avenues to check out.
Good luck w/your major, though |

I'm not actually in university yet, but that's where I'll be going, probably. I wouldn't want to be an art teacher, though. Couldn't handle it. _________________ |

There are enough jobs you can get with an artschool diploma!
You have the part where you can start your own business like in being a freelance illustrator or graphic designer, but you can also work at companies as graphic designer, at advertisementcompanies as illustrator, drawing storyboards and artwork for movies, commercials, animations etc. Or you just go into the more conceptual way where you make your money with thinking off concepts and stories.
Or you can work as Desktop Publisher for the time being while developing your talents more at home. ^_^ |
