I've noticed that a lot of people make up OCs but give them no background plot or personality traits,
Though that could also be from someone who dislikes typing :/

I've made probably over a hundred OCs at least in my life and they all have incredibly complex backstories that are often interwoven with each other, (and pretty much all of them come from three specific 'worlds'). But when the time comes to type it out.. I just look at the keyboard and think... 'It'll take me forever to type that out," and end up just typing out a sone to three lines like "This is XXX he's a happy lil' kid." Sometimes though I'll go crazy and type out a whole mini-story that ends up several paragraphs lon, like in my jester brothers picture afrom a few weeks ago. But that is a very very rare occurance.

But yeah DG doesn't like to type. Talk to me in real life I can go on for hours about my boys. But there is a difference. I love to talk (maybe I should look into one of those programs that type while you talk to it.. but I have a bad boston/new england accent so it might not work out all that great XD )

Yes, I don't like to type also. Sooo...when peole see my OC, all they see is a name because I don't feel like typing so much. XP

Ah, Lindsay, if only I were as determined as you to write it all out and keep my OCs going.
And gosh DG, hundreds of OCs you say? O_o
I avoid making too many new OCs nowadays because I want to be able to focus on the main five I have (yes, it's not just Raos, Adrian and Eclipse anymore).
I may create a new one soon for comic relief. A comedy series of some kind wouldn't be hard with my characters at all. Just throw them all in the same room and watch the fireworks fly >:3
Well just look at my DA gallery XD, including my scraps I've got a grand total of 740 pictures Surprised and out of a 100 sketchbook I maybe only post 15-20 finished works from it at most, which means, if I count all the other pictures from the last three years or so I probably have another 300 half colored ones, around 450 that are only inked (or half inked) and maybe around a thousand that never made it past the sketch stage (I'm not kidding either I go through a hundred page sketchbook in couple weeks most of the time, except for like the past two months I've been busy so I don't draw quite as much as I used to). Many of my characters never make it to the net XD cause unless I really REALLY like it, I never scan my doodles, sketches, and line arts.

Every few months or so I tend to make a new character set of maybe a dozen characters or so that interact with each other, usually only finishing the design for 3-5 of them, usually the 'main' characters. I do usually however write down character files for them all and occasional mini stories to set up and define personality. I however rarely type any of these out and I have a bad habit of losing my notebooks ._.

And you should make a comedy relief character! Surprised Those are my favorites XD I love wierdos :3

I sometimes wish people would draw my characters (though the fangirling may be a bit too much... Oo; ), just simply so I could see what they look like in other people's styles. :x I'd make a request in the requests forums, but then I'd feel like a dirty attention whore. 8D

I think all of my characters are comedic in some way or another. Aside from the fact that they're intentionally cliche (elementals? "last of their kind"? lolz), I tried not to make anyone too serious. And if they are a serious/angsty character (such as Gatha), I pick on them and make embarassing stuff happen to them.
OCs are ignored and that's not fair!
Ooh I already know how Fallen would respond to this

If you're mad because the general OC section is sorted in such an undervalued heading as "Miscellaneous", well, that's a matter of organization, aka quality/quantity issue. Many of the pictures in the general OC section simply cannot be easily sorted under the other headings we have in the system. They're not series-based fanchars, they're not anime style, they don't qualify as Fantasy and they're sure as hell not Furries. So where else can they go?

On the other hand, if you're mad that quality OC's don't get the comments, consider that we have thousands upon THOUSANDS of OC artwork here on FAC (possibly 10% of all FAC content), and good OC's get lost in the mess of crap that is poorly-drawn and Mary-Sue OC's. A lot of artists simply don't take time to think their characters through, and even some of the ones that do, don't take time to bless everyone else with the same info. A lot of artists effectively post a picture of their OC and walk off, and as a semingly universal truth, artists (in general) can churn out more crap than gold given a certain amount of time and effort.

So if you want quality thought-out OC's to get more exposure and comments, by all means go create a "Featured OC's" club. :)

QUOTE (Animemaster)
I wonder what would happen if I were to suddenly draw one of my characters with his arms around Kagome or some other anime character and call him an Inu OC. I wonder just how many comments I'd get then....
For laughs, you mean? That would be a sight to see. Laughing

Strata made a really good point. There are so many of the not-so-good OCs (Sonic, anyone?Razz) that it's really hard to find ones that the artist has put a lot of time and thought and work into creating. They just get lost in the crowd...

A "Featured OCs" club is a better name, because we're already "aware" that there are OCs out there. We just need to have a way to feature the good ones.

Plus it's better and shorter than "The Really Cool OCs With Personalities And Backstories Club". Laughing

Making the club is easy.
The hard part is that if you want just good quality OCs, then who will say what is good or bad? how will you get all of FAC's community to learn about the club? there are many things to think about!

Well, as much of a prick as I am, I really don't think quality would be judged by art skill as much as it is effort. You know, characters with names and stories and personalities, as opposed to "here's a random girl i drew in math class lol".

Alright, so I read everyones arguments and comments, I just want to say that you all put out interesting points. Please do not flame me for the things I say seeing that they are my opinion.
___________________________________________________________

First, I'd like to say that Lindsay, you need to chill. You get plenty of comments, Raos and Eclipse are like legends on FAC. Everyone draws them, I've seen it. I bet I could find about 5-10 different fanarts for them. (Just type their names into the search bar on the main page) I get three times less comments than you, but you don't see me complaining about it. You should be happy that you even get comments.

I do feel that OC's go unrecognized around here, but the name of the site says it all. People don't come here looking for OC's that isn't why it's the first site on google when they search "Fanart". I think someone should actually make a website just fr OC's. I know it would take a long time, but if you all have energy to complain about something that probably won't change, then you have plenty of energy to make a realistic solution.

I have an OC, hard to believe, but I do. His name is Chad and he doesn't get enough recogniton, but you know what...who cares. I don't draw him just to get comments, I draw him because that is what I love to do. He is my escape, my passion, he is what gets me through the day. If I had nothing else in the world but a pencil and a sheet of paper, I'd be alright because I could draw him to my hearts content. That is what an OC is for. They aren't made for show and tell, they're made for the pure satisfation of knowing that you can create. Seeing your OC on paper should be all that you need, not comments.

Obviously quality includes both art skill and background/personality creativity.
Is there anyway to make a category at the main site as the "advanced RP" section of the forum?

When a member has enough skill and creativity for creating his/her original characters, they make a post at the forum, asking for the password to the "advanced area"/"featured OC section" and if the members of the featured OC section think that they have enough skill, they are given the password to be able to submit their art to that section.

posible?
Seeing your OC on paper should be all that you need, not comments.
Maybe for you, but for most, good feedback and critique of something you did, is great.
And if you just need seeing the OC on paper, then why did you join a site like FAC in first place, knowing that you don't need to show your drawings and you don't want feedback?

I love seeing my characters in other people's style. But I too dislike asking for requests. But that got me too thinking of a different sort of club. A character trade club. Basically every month or every two weeks or something like that you be given the name of an artist and you would have to draw one of thier characters. But know one would know who got who until the end of the month (or whatever period of time is decided on). Kinda like a secret santa but all year round. And every month the person who draws names out of a hat would be different to make it more fair.

I never really started something like that though 'cause I didn't know if anyone would really be interested. I wouldn't mind setting something like that up though if there are enough people willing to participate. After all Secret Santa's are fun why limit them to one month a year?
So you never scan doodles? >:
I'm constantly scanning line art doodles from school. Some are just cute or random, others have a good joke behind them. People actually like to see them sometimes XD
Actually This thread got me in the mood to do a sketch dump XD I'm scaning all my favorite sketches from like three or four of my recent sketchbooks XD

lmao. I've thought about doing a quick 30min oekaki of Inuyasha just to see how many comments it gets in a day or something, then delete it. 'cause I totally do not need eight billion comments saying "inu is hot" or "pic is cool" in my inbox. 8D

But anyway. OCs. They're all I ever draw, although a good 96% of them never make it to the internet because I almost never finish planned artwork. If it didn't start out as a sketch in ink (and therefore does not need to be inked into lineart), it's got little chance of showing up here. :B

And I'dd have to agree with DG; I'm sure a lot of people have developed complex storylines for their characters but never bothered typing it all out. :/

Since I usually don't finish my pencil crayon art, I'm thinking of breaking out my paint again. 8D

A club would be nice, although I'm sure a good bit of you only need to go to Elfwood or something if you're just looking for OC art. :X

You might say I draw OC's all the time -- I'm always trying to think up a new characte revery drawing. The consequence is that I'm so busy thinking up new things to try that I almost never retread over existing material, in other words no one character in specific has any more sentimental value to me than any other.

Except maybe Atelier, he's like an avatar of me.

Lindsay, I see your point. Showing your work because you are proud of it, is great. I too am proud of my artwork, don't get me wrong, I am always proud of what I create. And yes, I love for others to see what I do, but I am not out for world wide recognition. If but only a few people see my art and say, "Hey that person is okay." Then I'm ok. I don't need for someone to tell me I'm good, (I'm sure most of you feel the same) all I need to know is that when my pencil is pressed to that paper, something original will be made by me.

OC's are us, well peices of us at least. They are the feelings that hide deep inside and the lives that we wish we led. They are like the imaginary friends that never go away. In a cliche sort of way, they complete us. At least, that is how I feel. And I'm sure that everyone who has posted here feels the same, even if it isn't to that extent. I honestly, don't think that you guys need a club, but since you insist, may I join?
Well, the main source of my determination for my work is the desire to develope my characters more and more. I like to make them as life-like as they can be and I plan on getting them animated someday if it's possible for me to get into character design and such...
Surprised Surprised Surprised I have that dream too... Surprised

Ah, that's so nice. I feel like that too. Almost 90% of the time I am talking about my characters to my friends, about the dreams I had of them, ideas, etc.

^_^

I'm interested in joining your club. I have OCs that I wish that would get a little more attention. Eight of them for sure. Maybe it's because my art is colored in pencil crayons...However, at my school, I found Photoshop Elements and am now coloring there. In fact, I just finished a chibi Arrow picture there. It's so cute.

This definately has a potential to pan out nicely. Everyone seems very driven from their comments. May I please join? I don't have many pics up, but all but two of mine are OCs (okay, there's only 3 and the headshot of one).

This seems like a neat idea. But will human-esque OCs be the only ones allowed? A great deal of creatures in the fantasy section qualify too.

It'd be great to have a club newsletter, sent out to all the members. It could contain an 'OC of teh Month' or something, I dunno. And maybe fun little things once in awhile like a contest. Or an OC interview- that'd be fun!

Ah, but don't get me started... Laughing

Haha, Brad, your OC is funny. Laughing Guess what? I like rice too!

A newsletter would be fun. But how would we keep track of all the members and how would the newsletter be sent out? Email? And also we'd need someone to be in charge of it. :)

Sounds like fun, though!
