Didn't race today. My DS was on charge Wink and I couldn't be bothered to pick it up.

Didsy: Can't help but notice, you don't watch the time much do you? Dates, times. Strata posted at 5:05 AM (British time) you posted at 4:02 PM. Can't help but notice.

And I'm on Pacific time... GMT-7 (or -8?).

Anyway, my latest updates....

I performed a controlled experiment on the Figure-8 course. On Time Trials, if you do no drifting at all (holding a tight racing line, etc.), you'll average about 35 seconds per lap, depending on your kart.

Now, if you mimic the Staff Ghost Data and do a single, long power-slide + mini-turbo around each of the turns, this shaves about 0.5s off of each lap.

But, if you snake the entire course... you can generally shave 2-3 seconds per lap from your total time. Three laps = six seconds! That's nearly 1/4 of a lap right there.

Intriguingly, ROB's kart seems to be decent when it comes to snaking, probably due to the lower Handling of it.

In my observations, it seems as if the Drift stat is more like your general traction on the road... it doesn't effect how tightly you can power-slide by very much, but it's quite noticeable when you break out of the drift... high-Drift karts (like Daisy's) recover their traction very quickly (and are thus unsuitable for snaking), while low-Drift karts like Luigi's Streamliner continue to 'slip' for quite a bit afterwards.

I don't think snaking is an intentional part of the game's design, but... I gotta wonder that those missions requiring you to do "at least" so many power-slides on a given course don't encourage snaking right there....

You give mario kart a whole knew look. Before I found this thread, it was an enjoyable kart racer.

Now its a tactical war. Very Happy...

Speaking of tactics... I bowled another player over with a Star by hitting the brakes and letting them slam into me from behind. Works every time

There was one matchup against a player named (and I quote) "I_H8_GAYS", good clean racer. Too bad he forfeited the last race (after hitting a shell and Bob-Omb on Rainbow Road, both mine), or I would've swept the match.

Then again, I've seen the other side of this myself, and I can understand what it's like to keep losing to someone.

Another easy tactic: If you're neck and neck with another racer, release the gas and let them go ahead of you slightly. Then you can draft 'em and boost straight by ;)

(edit) It's now Sunday, and after several Mario Kart sessions yesterday and today, I've finally accumulated more wins than losses.

Too bad about 1/3 of those wins are from other people forfeiting Sad I don't actually win many races at all, I seem to be stuck always coming in at 2nd place.

Though I did win four straight races for a first time today. :woot:

Current record: 77W-62L.

No time. But you might be able to spot me on the weekends, approximately midday PST (-7 GMT).

Nick: Strata
Emblem: A blue dragon face
Stars: 1

Favorite Racer: Yoshi + Standard YS
Most Favorite Tracks: Delfino Plaza, Wario Stadium, Rainbow Road, etc.
Least Favorite Tracks: Figure 8, SNES Mario 1, DK Pass, etc.
Racing Style: Varies by opposition (normal, snaking, or taunting)

Another trick I've been practicing lately is that if you hit the Jump button right before a mini jump ramp (like the ones in the Sky Garden), sometimes you'll go launch really high in the air, like 2-3x the height you would have normally. I like to call it a "mega jump". The fun part about it is not just the airtime, but your kart slams down on the track with enough force that if you hit the Jump button again, you can literally bounce right off of the track and into the air again without.

For example, you know those three hills at the end of Choco Mountain? I did a mini-turbo + jump off of the first hill, jumping again when I landed... my Kart literally bounced off the tops of those hills almost like a stone skipping across water, and at mini-turbo velocity too. It was absolutely thrilling, seeing how long i could keep my Kart in the air.

It's still not much fun to race against snakes though... snaking is too damn competitive and it robs the game of its fun factor. Although... here's an idea... if you can somehow make an agreement with another player, then if you start a 3-player matchup and the leader is snaking, try this:

- Let the snake win. That is, you and the other person don't even bother to try racing against him, you just sit right at the starting line. Wait for the snake to complete his three laps around the track, THEN start racing to see who comes in second and who comes in last. You can't proceed on to the next race until everyone (save the person in last place) crosses the finish line, so the snake will have to wait, and wait, and wait for you guys to complete your three laps, and not be able to do anything about it!

If the snake endures through four races of that, both of you opt to race him again. If he disconnects, forfeits, opts out, then congrats, you've just scared off a snake.

Snake torture OWNED.

No time. You can't just up and ask someone if they want to race "right now", you have to plan ahead.

Especially when it takes me like 30 minutes to get to the nearest Wi-fi hotspot.

I *might* be online tomorrow at about this same time (noon - 2pm PST / 8-10pm GMT) though... or Sunday....

Problem with the adaptor? You can still play Wi-fi at any available hotspot.

My latest info from last weekend's racing (Sunday, afternoon PST):

- 4-way matchup, leader was a snake, two people quickly forfeited, leaving just me and him. Guess what, I got to taunt him for nearly three straight races. Second race was SNES Choco Island 2, on the last lap I hit a Pirahna plant while drifting, suddenly I had an idea. I backed my kart up a little bit, and hit it again. And again. And again. And again

Then, on the next course (GCN Luigi Circuit) I deliberately plowed into the Chain Chomp repeatedly. And the other guy took notice too, after hitting the Chomp like 5 times, I glanced at the map and his kart was just sitting there on the track watching what I was up to!

On the final race (Figure 8), I waited at the starting line for a few seconds, then spun my kart around and went down the track backwards for nearly 1/2 a lap. The guy actually followed behind me for that distance, probably just to see what crazy thing I'd do next. I mean, seriously, when you have 80+ wins to 60+ losses, why would you want to drive like a madman?

One Answer: Two people had forfeited already, so by playing through I get to collect two wins on their behalf, even though I lose to the remaining player.

In another race (a 3-way matchup), the guy in the lead had a Spiny Shell, so you know not to get too far ahead of him. No one wanted to get hit with that thing, so we remained real close to each other, until the final turn. I dashed around the corner, he lobs the Spiny Shell at me, I get blown up while he hits the brakes to stay clear (and the third player spins out from the explosion). He zips ahead as the explosion is clearing, then the guy behind me launches a red shell at him, and while he's tumbling over, I wind up at the finish line. I ended up sweeping the whole match somehow -- four straight wins.

Similarly, in another race, I got hit with a Spiny shell, but we were pretty closely packed, so the explosion ended up taking everyone out (including the one who used it) and not just me. Priceless

I also ran into a guy named "Fear No 1" (as in "no one", not "#1") with like 900+wins to 40 or so losses and a DBZ av. Man, this guy was like ...a kart raper.

(Now THERE's two words you hope to never hear in the same sentence again WTF? )

What I mean was, he was a pretty skilled at racing, but he wasn't competing online just to come in first, he was out to beat other players and rub their noses in it. We're talking BRUTALLY tactical about his use of items. In the first race, he hit two of us with a star, then he stops, backs up, hits us AGAIN, and then AGAIN (3 times total) while he's invincible. One player forfeited right there because of it.

He did something similar on the final race in the set against me -- must've hit me like 4 times with that Star. I mean, seriously, in a racing game, why take the time to hit players again when you could be zipping forwards at full speed? That guy was just plain abusive. No wonder he has so many wins on his record, not many people actually want to play against him. <_<

Apparently this goes by a number of terms on the Nintendo forums, such as "starstriking" or "starnage". It's the racing equivalent of FPS corpse humping.

Choose "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection" > "Friend Code" > "Confirm Friend Code".

However, you will not actually receive your Friend Code until you have first logged on to the Nintendo WFC.

You can access Nintendo's WFC in three ways:

- A high-speed Internet connection on your computer, and the Nintendo Wi-Fi/USB adaptor

or:

- A Wi-Fi home network ("hotspot") and high-speed Internet connection

OR:

- Go to any place that has its own free Wi-Fi hotspot and use theirs.
