Does anyone know of some way to get Photoshop for a fairly appropriate price? Something that's not over $1000? I was looking at a bunch of Photoshop programs, and they were all extremely expensive. I want a good artist program, without the huge price... Any suggestions?

Of course there is a way!
I got my CS2 for approx. 400$ (something around 340 Euro)
You buy the OEM Version of Photoshop 5, 6 or 7 which sells around 45-100$ and the update for CS2 (100-200$) and you have a full legal version of CS2, it works the same way with vol. 7 or CS updates.
Update versions are a lot cheaper, the only thing is that you need to install both, and that you have to get the number from the Adobe network, but its a legal action and you own a full version after that you can even use in commercial ways Wink
(possible that it is cheaper at all in US, I bought it in germany)

Holy cow... You're serious... Can you be a little more specific with how you got it? I don't quite understand. Please pardon that.

PS. I have Gimp, but don't know how I use it.

You simply buy a older version of Photoshop, (It has to be 5.0 or 6.0 because I think the upgrade isn't for older versions than the 5.0 but just check that on the upgrade package, the info can also be found on the adobe site)
I think amazon still sells the 6.0, not sure though, or ebay, or another store. These old versions cost around 100$, you install it normally.
Than you get the Upgrade:
for example here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0008GM97...glance&n=229534

the upgrade can only be installed on systems which have a photoshop already installed! You run this upgrade and it will ask you for a code, which you get from the adobe network, after that it upgrades the old photoshop you installed up to a CS2. That's it. Just imagine if firms would always have to buy a full version and no upgrades.. that would be horrible expensive!
Just to add it again, the old photoshop version on your PC HAS TO BE A LEGAL bought one, because if you just buy the upgrade legal you won't get a code to upgrade your old Photoshop. But that is how it runs in europe/germany, for more info how this runs exactly in other states you should have a look at the adobe site.. since I don't know all the details and it MAY NOT work in every state that way!

I actually don't like GIMP. I have PS 7.0. I suggest GIMP to people who want digital but don't want to pay.

Photoshop Elements II runs at about $100 and has everything you could need.

Further versions just include more filters and print options that are only necessary for mass print work.

you could try paintshop pro or Painter, those programs are actually made for drawing on the computer so maybe.
