I think "anime" is just a variation of what people want to draw like rude, sexy, violence, sexual, racsism and so on and forth but it doesn't need to be in total detailed oiled paintings like van gogh or Mattise (or whatever his name is).

SOOOO Anime is just a simple detailed drawn technique in a cartoon format. Confused
Could you please break that down into something that makes a little more sense? What I gathered from that was pretty much, "Anime is just an excuse to draw porn and not get in trouble".

'CAUSE SHOWS LIKE "DIGIMON" ARE JUST SO PORNOGRAPHIC AMIRITE

PS: Your sig is huge. Getridofitplz.

Well yes it pretty much is an excuse to draw porn but i didn't say that did I, but other shows like Digimon, pokemon, yugioh, are for kids so they wouldn't make it look like porn would they? Confused

The original series 1 was definitely more mature (the manga even more than the anime), but the Duel Monsters series was aimed at kids aged around 12-16.

Not necessarily "mature content" there, but yeah, it was dumbed down. xD Went from a teen audience to a 5-year-old audience.

And then there's GX, which is just... argh. That barely even NEEDED editing. All they did was scribble out some of the occult stuff. :/

And DG-sama was being sarcastic.

Just because there is quite a lot of pornographic anime, that doesn't mean it's all porn, or even perverted. No, really, even just watch the stuff on Adult Swim. While some may have a few dirty jokes, I wouldn't consider any of them to be pornographic (or even really "Adult", for that matter).

Because ALL anime is drawn in a generic "pointy" style, amirite?

A lot of American cartoons are pointy too. :/

As far as I am concerned it is anime if it was produced in Japan, end of story. There are, of course, more western looking animes and several anime inspired western cartoons, but I do not think that need change the lable. It is a bit tricker w/ manga, I think, because the black & white graphic novel type set-up is different from the newsprint super-hero color comic book, and the simple gag-a-strip newspaper comics. I pretty much go by the same rule, if it is produced in Japan it is manga, otherwise no, but there is definately stuff that is published in a manga-like format, or uses an art style that is manga-esk (or both). Still, I just call anything thick enough with a continueing story line a graphic novel, anything gag-a-strip a comic, anything published in thin newsprint books a comic book, and anything that used to be a comic but is now in book form a trade book. Weither or not it is manga matters little to me, because I like eastern and western stuff pretty much equally.

I dunno, if you go by how it looks and feels there is such a grey area. It is not like compairing Sailor Moon to Bugs Bunny. There are all kinds of superhero cartoons that can follow most of the basic 'rules' of anime and still not look like anime. Batman Beyond comes to mind. And then there are animes inspire by american comics or animation (I am pretty sure Yu-Gi-Oh was, but Yu-Gi-Oh is sorta in a field of its own, artisitically speaking).

While you guys are on the subject, am I the only one who does not think it is fair to call Teen Titans 'american anime'? I mean, Totally Spies/ Martin Mystery are totally trying to be anime, Avatar and some others are pretty anime-ish too, but Teen Titans freely mixes eastern and western techniques. I dunno, I do not think they are trying to be anime so much as they were anime-inspired and are doing whatever the hell they want.

Oh, and Stef? Your rule is pretty good, but I can think of several cartoons most would call anime that are more-or-less episode by episode, and several other cartoons that are not. Justice League can be pretty ep-by-ep, but the Cadmis stuff takes a season to build up as well as some of the other things they dedicate their season finales too. In anycase I would not want to watch the eps out of order. Gargoyles is another one I got completely lost one when I skipped a few episodes. Jackie Chan Adventures and Winx Club also come to mind, but I suppose some people could argue those as anime if they wanted. As far as the other way round goes, DiGi Charat, Super Milk-chan, Hamtaro, and Ranma all have as much or less carry-over as Teen Titans does. Still, the more involved miss-an-ep-and-you-will-regret-it plotline is definately a more eastern tendancy.

If you ask me, authentic manga and anime is way better than the stuff Americans are coming up with... Like Teen Titans, Ben Ten, Xaio Lin Show down. In my opinion. those are all wanna-be's, compared to what you get from Japan. I don't really think it has completely to do with whether you're Japanese or not, it's just that Japan is who started anime, so I think it's inevitable that authentic anime and manga will be more preferable. Doesn't mean all American anime creators aren't as good, but they will be different. We have what I call a western culture. It's different here than over there, from what I see. Like in Xiaou Lin, the characters are more diverse. You've got a cowboy and an African American teen, and some freaky miget with yellow skin and a cheap acsent.

So basically, Western anime's vs. Authentic ones, I think it all depends on your opinion. Nothing is really set in stone.
As far as I am concerned it is anime if it was produced in Japan, end of story.
Yeah, I agree with that too. But then, I don't think labels really matter, just as long as it's good, enjoyable anime. And not completely out there with lame story plots and cheap animation.

I still have trouble considering Teen Titans wannabe anime. It incorperates a lot of anime-ish stuff, but it also has some really weastern stuff going on. I dunno, I do not think it is trying to be anything, it just is. Unlike, say, Totally Spies.

But whatever, I already said that and you all are allowed your own opinion.

I can't believe no one has said this yet, but I'd say that what makes anime anime is when it is animated using the same or a similar style to that of the anchient Japanese artform of drawing known as manga. Because of this, the region or ethnicity from which it was published makes absolutely no difference. An example of this would be the fact that the French are now publishing anime shows. One such anime, known as "Code Lyoko" is defined as an anime due to the fact that the artistry used to create the show has a heavy emphasis on the facial features(espesially the eyes ,hair ,and distinctive manga-style mouth), reasonably proportioned bodies, and overly proportioned heads varying ofecourse by degrees of the indivigual character's own age (the younger the character, the more overly proportioned their head will be).
If you want to know more and get a striaght and reliable answer, you may want to consider looking it up on wikipedea.

Eugh, I hate topics like this. It's like every other "ANIME IS OMG" topic in the universe. In the end everyone is saying the same thing.

To sum it up, anime is a japanese term for cartoons. It can refer to things from Shaman King to Tom and Jerry. Foreigners tend to associate the word with japanese animation-- and only that. It's a word from that country, so why not? No big, language barrier and the like.

The only thing that differs japanese cartoons from american ones is that the nips tend to have "Otaku" AKA smelly guys in tight shirts with a certain green haired "nekomimi meido" princess on 'em.
In Japan, everything animated is "Anime"

in pretty much everywhere else, Anime is Japanese-made animation.

Manga is pretty much the same thing.
Are you trying to Say that you have to be Japanese to do Anime? Question

If so, that's not true. I get the impression that many people think that you have to be Japanese to do Anime but that's discrimnation. First of all, Anime is a certain style of animation and cartooning. Many people in my school who are Black, Latino, white, etc, want to major in Anime.
I'm just talking in general, I hope i didn't offend anyone Wink

discrimination, discrimination. Statement that only Japanese can make anime is well-founded. As half the people's definition of "anime" is Japanese-made cartoons, so no matter how well something mimics that of the mainstream anime, it's still not anime.

I think anime is a style and not a group of animation originating from one country, ie. experimental cartoons from Japan in avant-garde style is not anime, but Western cartoons that follow similar style, budget, and story sequence is anime.

Too bad all of the cartoons that try to mimic anime sucks cock.

Oh! I understand now. I just wanted to know what you meant, I'm sorry if I took it the wrong way. Smile
I just love the style of Japanese anime, and that's something I wanted to do(besides disney and all). I'm thinking about going to Japan after High school to learn the techniques and styles of anime.
Anways, if you know some things about Japanese Anime and how to become a pro, let me know Very Happy
