Anthro = A person who has cat items
Furrie = A character that is an animal that stands on two legs.
Yeah, afraid those definitions are up for debate. Remember that the prefix anthro- means "human", and therefore "anthropomorphic animal" is by definition means an animal with humanlike characteristics. A human with animal-like characteristics is quite the opposite, and technically called "zoomorphic".
Plus, the "Furry" fandom also includes some degree of non-anthropomorphic animal characters.
Myself? I'm neither pro- nor anti- furry, nor pro/anti anthro. However, I am anti-clich, which means that while I do appreciate an occasional furry animal or anthropomorph, I hate stereotypes, and quite frankly I don't consider most of what people call a "furry" as measuring up to the definition of "anthropomorphic". (Case in point: I still moderate the Fantasy > Clans > Werecats section)
So in other words, I may sit on the fence between for and against, but my legs are resting on the "anti" side.

Oh, furries. I've always considered furries/anthros (I use the two terms interchangeably) to be more human than animal. Catgirls and such are.... another breed altogether. They aren't anthros though. Too much human in 'em to be anthropomorphic.
My early art back in middle school was heavily influenced by the Rewall series, so I've kind of grown up drawing anthros. It wasn't until much later that I learned how diverse the anthro community is, and I was totally sketched out by the large number of furry porn artists out there, so I kind of withdrew from the whole thing.
At this point, I'm not particularly for or against anthros. Like any other area of art, there are good artists and bad artists, and I can appreciate good art when I see it. I still draw anthro characters once in a great while, although I refuse to get involved with any sort of furry community, mainly because I get tired of seeing so many feline/lupine anthro characters, when there are so many animals to choose from. Well, I have other reasons too, such as the fact that I've never been able to feel comfortable with the concept of 'headfur'. Oh, and people who believe they are furries and assert their 'fursonas' just creep me out. *shrugs* To each their own.
I've always loved weasel anthros. Of course, they're pretty rare even within the Redwall fandom, and as soon as you step outside of that, they pretty much disappear, which I think is a crying shame. I used to have various anthro characters, but the two that I treasure most are both weasels. |

Technically, anthros have been around since Egyptian times as the Gods. They weren't complete anthros, but an animal head counts. i.e. Anubis, Osiris. _________________ I'm a zombie. Yarg.

I'm for anthro's *the drawn characters... furs and furries are the PEOPLE with fursonas, and/or cosplay as them*.
I myself am thankfully not a fur, but I am considered an anthro artist. Non-fur human whom likes drawing anthro characters AS WELL as humans, and animals, still life, chibis, graphic design stuff, mystic creatures, etc.
Whether a person is into furs and anthro's or not is their own rightful decision, and yeah, expressing their thoughts and opinions on the whole subject is a-okay. But I do have to admit I'm sick of both sides bashing each other for one reason or another. And getting those of us whom really don't fit one hundred percent on either side stuck dead in the middle with no place or person to turn to since then neither the furs or non-furs want to bother with us since we're not really in with either side.
Oh well... can't please everyone.
I'm fed up with furries because people never come up with anything new. It's always cat furry, dog furry, fox furry or wolf furry. No one ever considered a giraffe or fish furry.
Honestly, I think it's all the same generic thing, no one ever comes up with anything new. There are a few other things I find distasteful about furries but I've said enough.
I drew a fish anthro. It's here on FAC, actually.

I, personally, love anthro pictures. Brett Booth, especially. He draws the best anthro pictures, then his wife colors them. Those two, working together, is a great combo! |

Anthros are fine by me, though I'm not sharply enough on either side to say love or hate.
But I do get real pissed off at... nekos, is it? When all they stack on are ears and the occasional tail, it gets kinda repetitive and pointless. :/
But anthros that are more animal than human; they're pretty cool, though I do like a more original style pinned on top. |

It defiles the definition of "anthropomorphic animal", it's also clich, and I am anti-clich. So yeah, I agree with you there. I really despise clich anthropomorphism. |

Hmm.. concerning Anthro, I mainly use that word, cause I can't really use the word "furry" for my interpretation a furry is a "furry", per say a character with fur. For me anthro is the overall word for animals with human attributes (or the inverse way, humans with animal attributes) but with attribute I mean real parts, not only ears or a tail... I had a discussion concerning that theme in combination with "Taures" once... I tell you... it offers even more ways to discuss and flame.. *LOL*
I consider myself as more pro anthro/furry, but I don't consider myself as being an anthro or furry, I do play characters of that kind, writing PLAY in capslock letters... I do know a lot people who are real furs, these are all from the really nice kind, but I also think its all a bit driven by prejudices... as it is everywhere in life with people who don't see therself as "normal" *g* |

I suppose I would be 'Pro-Anthro', since a majority of my work contains anthropomorphic animals. But, there are several things I dislike about being called or associated with anthro or furry artists. First, everyone assumes I draw smut because I draw anthros. I HATE it when people label me as a hentai artist when I've never drawn anything explictly naked..even my character models don't have detail. I don't do nudity, let alone two or more characters in questionable acts. Second, my beliefs and opinions were once immediantly dismissed by someone who thought I was a 'fur'. I replied saying I drew them, NOT am one, nor do I think I am one, nor do I dress like one. But of course, he insisted that my life meant nothing and I wasn't a person because I draw anthros. Excuse me, am an anthro. T_T I can't stand people like that.
If you need originality, poke around DeviantART more. I've seen a Jellyfish anthro. It's not a matter of lack of originality. There's plenty out there. Many characters have great stories to tell. But the unoriginality outweighs..or simply gets seen more..than original stuff. You have to dig for it. I have Piper, my persona, but she's taken on a life of her own. People see her and think me, but she's a whole other beast. :O It's scary sometimes.
There's good, bad, and ugly in every art genre. Anthropomorphic is no exception. (But I wouldn't mind seeing some anthropomorphized food more.) |

That would be cool. Where the orginality of my character is that he's a silver fox anthro. I've seen tons of anthros you'd never guess on dA. Like some of those less popular pokemon. An online friend of mine made Red XIII from Final Fantasy VII an anthro. _________________ I'm a zombie. Yarg.

This thread is too cuddly.
I voted anti. First or second anti vote. Not because the art is technically bad, there's some great work in any genre. Gorgeous porn and technically well done sonic garbage. But, aside from the fact I just don't like animal people, the anthro genre is the biggest source of people with an obscene number of characters, or even just one or two, scrambling to be unique.
In fantasy...realism...sci-fi...you find people drawing green haired elf boys named Oracle that are really just an excuse for a pretty picture and that's it. But every anthro character I see has some stupid backstory trying desperately to validate it. "This is Slade and he's a fox who has to rescue so-and-so from his evil cousin but he's tortured by his past and he got that scar when he was 10 and he doesn't know he's really the heir to the throne and blahblahblahblahblah" Gimme a break. 99% of these "characters" are just boring and generic.
All the power to the people who keep it all in their heads. But when it turns into every other sentence starting with "my character..."...ugh.
I think I hate the fandom more than anime. Maybe. More people can sorta draw a person than can sorta draw an animal. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

hmm... I just can't really agree to this, because it is not really theme-related every kind of art can have a backstory or not, if you draw a pic of a guy and name it "guy" I myself wouldn't be really interested in it, the same if you would draw a badger-anthro guy and name it "badgerguy" what should make me have a detailed look at it? It is boring... even the title, no matter what theme it is. I do like pictures who tell you a story, even if it just shows one character and nothing more, you don't have to read it... but it makes a picture more interesting, at least for me. I guess this is simply, you like the theme or you don't like it, I do have themes, I hate, specially concerning anthro stuff, but I don't hate the whole genre, there is so much you can mis- or interprete there at all... just what came to my mind though.. |
