I've recognized alot of artwork from various artists, whose work looks the same...which in some cases, are a unique "Style" of art. What makes artists choose to do such a unique style? I know that I usually always drawing in pencil, or charcoal pencil, because I love just regular black and white look of the drawings...

How about you guys?

I think my style is unique in the sense that I can barely even tell what inspired it anymore.

Not anim at all, just a good ol' original toony North American style.

I used to do a lot of black and white stuff, but these days anything that's not coloured or crazy cross-hatched brings me shame.

I'm still young, so colors aren't something I'm exactly used to...but in the future, I plan to improve my creations with color.

Some stuff looks better in black and white. I just don't like it for my crisp lineart.

personally, i don't ever color my pencil art because i don't want to mess it up. if i color anything i make it cg... if i mess up i just hit Ctrl+Z... i'm trying to cg more often, but it's so time consuming! the last one i did: "Just a Kiss - Sora and Kairi" took at least 12 hrs.. it took me forever to get it just right with the lines and the coloring...

enough babbling Rolling Eyes

i think the style just has to come natural... you can force yourself to draw something like someone else does, but you end up adding your own twist...

I agree that it has to come natural where as with me i think my style changes all the time sometimes i do scribbly sketches then good clean art but then when i try and do the scribbly sketches again i cant so yes it has to come natural! Laughing Smile Very Happy

I'd like to think my style of art is at least a tiny bit unique, or at least recognizable to those who have seen it before.

A year ago I had a really uber generic animeish style, but for the past half year or so I've been working really hard on trying to make it not look quite so generic. I've been pulling some ispiraion from several American comic artists, I couldn't tell you names because I'm not good at remembering them. The person who draws the new Teen Titans comics for one, several of the artists who have done the art for issues of "Foot Soldiers" for another (really spiffy really really unknown title I think, you should check it out 'tis cool). But my style isn't a mimicry or duplicate of thiers either.

Actually the picture in my sig is a really good example of my current style @_@ Even though not many people seemed to like it. It's kinda like one of the few pictures I've drawn that I look at and say "This is MY style" lol I make no sense

I can honestly say no, I don't think my style is unique. The stuff I post here is all my fan art, so I usually try to make it look like the original, or not like my own. My original pictures all look a certian style, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's my style, because lot's of people draw like I do.

I think my art style is fairly unique - my pictures are definitely recognizeable as being mine, and I get quite a few comments from friends and observers that I have my own style. I'm not quite sure what sets it apart from others' drawings though. Maybe the fact that while it's heavily anime-influenced, it's not done in that 'generic anime style' that I have no interest in trying to emulate. And maybe it's the fact that I'm lazy and most of my pictures end up looking kind of simple. Blah;

Exactly....Sometimes, even, I find myself drawing a real person, but then ending up with a fictional character that I had decided to create, sometime during the process of drawing. Now, that's how I get my ideas...from everyday people....I just use my imagination....but mostly it's all in my head...someday I've got to put it all into a drawing.

Mine I'd consider pretty different. I haven't met many other people who originated their styles from, Yu-Gi-Oh and Demon Diary. Really I don't find it looking like either anymore. It's sort of evolved into a twist off an anime style yet it still contains that anime quality. I like it that way. Smile

I supposedly have a pretty unique style. I'd hardly consider it to be anime anymore, but i wouldn't call it "American", either (then again, if it's not anime, and I'm an American, I guess it's technically American. :B Just not the classic comic style).

You can still see the anime influence, but you can see a lot of realism in them, too. Realist-ic, but still cartoony. D: I dunno. Defined noses/lips/cheeks/eyes, but still somewhat simplified overall. And they still have the clumpy anime hair. x:

My style is partialy original.

I developed my own Animeish western style a while ago.
later a learnt how to properly draw anime. 3 different sourses.

so now it's more of a mix of what I learnt and what I knew.

so it's kinda my very own Anime style.

My style keeps changing depending on what i read/look at. I used to draw anime, and then realized it was kind of a waste to me, since I never really liked how my anime pictures looked.
Besides, I started drawing anthros, so now I don't bother with the anime stuff. Anthros are just so much more fun to draw Very Happy.

I think that my anthro style stands out...like, you could tell which ones I did. They all have the same basic structure to their faces.

so-so for mine. I draw things my own way and when I do a request that would be a fan art, I make it a lil different. It looks like the character but you can see I didn't make it the same way.
Some people maybe can recognize my style but I'm working on it.

I don't exactly know how original you might say my style is. I try to make it somewhat original, but I think it's a little inbetween American and Japanese, since that's all I started out doing. I would like to think it's original, but I'm not the judge.

IndagoFeather, actually, the first manga I read was demon diary, and I kinda took a little of the style with me, though you probably can't tell by now... [heh]
But like, the highlights on the eyes, and the hair. :x
Everyone likes to think they've got something original, at least if they draw original works. I guess I'd clump myself in too.
I always did like the rather sharp style of eyes that fold in corners at the end, but I noticed it a lot, so I rather forcefully kept myself away from using that style.
Hard to say if the style's really original, though.
Everyone tried to draw something original with anime, but we're all usually influenced by what anime we come across.
I think I've got some bits and pieces from Saiyuki, with the down-sloping eyes, and I've been 'studying' art styles as of late, though I'm kinda fond/fine with what style I have now. Smile

I would say its the "combination" which makes art unique or not, you can possibly draw something in a Disney-simlar style but color and shade it completely different and it will look unique, I don't really want to shout out loud that I have an unique style, since these days, with so many artists and styles it is almost impossible to be unique anymore, and I dare to say, for the artist him/herself it is hard to say if the personal style is unique or not, someone from "outside" will see it more clearly, I guess... back to the fact, as said the combination is the most unique thing, at least that's what's my main focus is at, concerning art Wink
