Man, can't believe I'm the one to start this topic. XD If there's anything I missed, or it shouldn't be here, just kick me and I'll go away.
Anyway.
So, who saw the movie?? Did anyone like it?
Okay, since this is for those who have seen the movie...
SPOILERS are profound. Yuo've been warned.
Okay, I'm not going to put in an actual poll, because I'd prefer you guys score it by points. Out of 10 total, okay?
Well, might as well start off. 8/10.
I liked the graphics, just really catching and well-done, and for the first half of the movie, it was pretty funny, as well as interesting and whatnot, much better than most pulled-together sequels of hit movies, which tend to suck ass.
My pet peeve? It started with the 'Davy Jones' coming after you. The curse from the first movie was pretty interesting and special, but this one kinda tipped it a bit too far on the fantasy scale.
And the worst? The designs for the Flying Dutchman and the Davy Jones crew. It pissed the hell out of me. I mean, a squid on your head? Shell?? Hammerhead?!?
I managed to get used to the whole 'davy jones' curse and all, and it wouldn't have been so bad, if only they'd just looked like decent bad guys and not mutant starfish/squid exposed to radiation.
I mean, I guess there wasn't much left though, not wanting to do undead ghouls again, but still. Something, just about anything would've been better.
Otherwise, the movie was pretty good. Nice graphics and funny dialogue/happenings, and okay sword fights.
And with a cliffhanger like that? It definately makes this a trilogy to be finished.
What about your crits? |

Davey Jones was the only thing I liked. PotC has been fantasy from the very beginning. It's cheesy and childish and you had undead bad guys in the first one. Ghosts are no less fantasy than the (quite well designed for what they are) bad guys in this one.
Wasted graphics on a crap movie.
EDIT: And the whole thing was a slapstick routine anyway, so you really can't bitch about things not being based in reality
2nd EDIT: 2.5/10. Worst acting I've ever seen Depp do. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Meh, it was of second-movie-in-a-trilogy quality. Those movies are always the low point, because it's like if you took the middle 40 minutes of any given movie and gave it it's own feature. Nothing concludes itself, a lot of stuff just happens. I know a lot of people didn't like the way this movie ended, but imagine being back in the 80s before the third Star Wars movie came out and the second one had just left off with all the heroes in deep shit. Clone Wars and that second LotR movie were so unbelievably bad I couldn't even force myself to watch the whole things. It is the second-movie way.
As far as the craft of the film itself went, this movie was a bit lacking. Characters would be on one ship and then seemingly randomly be on another. Characters that it was implied had died in the first movie were back in full force. Why would they all be in bad favour for allowing Jack Sparrow to get away, when the entire crew of the Black Pearl seems to have escaped their capture unscathed and no one cares about that? Character development was severely lacking, but I attribute that to the second movie bug.
Kiera Knightly's character was the most useless piece of bitch in that whole thing, and I'm not saying that for OMG she killed Johnny WAAH fangirl fangirl fangirl reasons. Aside from the scene where she feeds Jack to the Kracken she may as well have not even been in the movie at all, I can't recall a single useful thing she did. The scene where the guys are swordfighting and she gets all pissy about it so she starts throwing rocks at them and pretending to pass out? What the hell was that? Even I was thinking "Just get your ass back to the kitchen and crank out some babies you lame female stereotype." They wavered back and forth from "I ARE TEH GREATEST PIRATE MAN!" to "Oh woe is me, the boys are fighting and I am but a poor girl" with her, and- well, as much as I hate to throw around the Mary Sue card that's pretty much what she was.
Jack Sparrow was overdone. He wasn't quirky and suave, he was just drunk. Davey Jones was pirate enough for the two of them, though. Effects-wise, he was amazingly well-crafted and acting-wise I think he moved the way Jack should have. I have to admit I spent the whole movie waiting for a flock of seagulls to descend upon him, though. All that fish meat just lying out there in the open...
I got a few good laughs out of the scene where they're running around in the bone balls, but all in all the action was too over-the-top and slapstick to do justice to the first movie. There were some unbeievable things that happened in the first one, but overall you could more or less accept them. This one was just full of cartoonishly impossible action.
I didn't think it was all that bad a movie, but it didn't do great justice to the first one. I'll still reserve final judgement until I see the third one. _________________

The slapstick, oh god the slapstick...
I loathed the water wheel scene (that, I might add, went on FOR FUCKIN' EVER). And the fruit/running from the natives bits. Davy Jones was wasted on a live action cartoon.
Actually, it reminds me a bit of King Kong in that King Kong would have been a much better movie had they cut out 45 mintues of the CG wanking ("omg run from teh dinosaurs!!!!....OH NOES BUGZZZZ!!!!!..." on and on and on). And Pirates would have been better with 45 minutes of cheesy slapstick and rum jokes cut out.
And yeah, Jack Sparrow sucks. Drunken queen.
I do think it was a bad movie because, when you cut out all the cheap jokes and visual gags, very little actually happens. And of course, in true lame movie style, the Kraken destroys the first ship in 30 seconds, but it takes 45 minutes to take them down. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Yeah, I noticed that too... I forgave it simply for storytelling reasons. When the first ship sank it was a good gag, like watching a muskelunge eat a duck. If the second one went down like that everyone would have felt even more cheated.
The wheel scene got to me, though. Even when I saw it in the trailers I was like "Huh. That's going to be one of those scenes that lasts forever and cheapens the whole movie, isn't it?" And the continuity in it bothered me... like Jack gets thrown from the wheel, but then he's right back in it. What was the point of throwing him in the first place? A lot of uneccessary screen time wasted for a cheap laugh.
That whole sequence was over the top. When Jack bounced himself off the fire, that was clever and fitting to the tone of the first movie. When it turned into him flipping over cliffs and getting into food fights with the islanders, that was too much.
Also, as cheesy as it will be, I'll be dissappointed if they don't have someone ride up to an island strapped to the backs of two sea turtles in the third movie. _________________

I liked it.
Davy Jones looked a lot like Cthulhu.
I don't really know if that's good or bad.

I also enjoyed it. However it was played more for laughs than the first one was, and thus didn't have the same sort of feel that the first one had. They also didn't seem to have much to do with one another plot wise, which they ought to have been. It wasn't really a necessary sequel and in all honesty it kind of detracts from the original. Besides, at the beginning it appeared to have the tone of being more serious and somewhat dark what with the ruined wedding and whatnot but then it turned into swordfights on top of water wheels... I liked it for what it was, a slapstick comedy, but it could have been much better as a sequel. |

This is the same problem I worry they're going to have with the next Batman movie. They chose the least wonky villain for the first one and even stripped him of his one superpower to make him more normal. Now when they pull in all the strange villains like Two-Face or Joker they'll seem really out of place unless they take a lot of liberties with the characters.
The first movie in a series sets the mood. It builds the reality that you're supposed to accept and sets the physical limitations of the universe the movie takes place in. If the second movie doesn't fit that reality, fans feel cheated. _________________

I have to be honest, I saw it again in theaters on Friday and I never really thought about it but fallen is right. Those scenes do take forever and after the first time, they get boring. I just wanted to see the ending.
I'm probably gonna get verbally raped by you all for saying this but I acutally really loved the ending to this movie. I expected it to be like a second-movie-in-a-trilogy kind of ending so the way it ended with everyone being in deep trouble, that was really good. Plus, I loved how Barbosa is back. I totally didn't see it coming and Barbosa, in my opinion, was an even more appealing character in the last movie than Jack Sparrow. So its great to see him back and the third movie promises to be very interesting in terms of how Will and Elizabeth and the rest of the crew accept being under his command. It was just too cool.
Davy Jone's crew was some of the best CGI I've seen in a movie. Usually, thats like a major pet peeve of mine because characters who are solely CGI tend to be stiff and awkward when it comes to creating expressions and moving around but Davy Jones was very convincing. His eyes portrayed emotions very convincingly and it was believable, once you put yourself in the mindset that what you are in a fantasy world where monsters like that can exist. All in all, wonderful CGI to an already wonderful movie.
I give it a 9.5/10 only because it is a summer flick and I don't expect to do a lot of thinking and over-analyzing in the summer. |

I watched it with my friends. So fun!
I really liked it, but my butt got numb from sitting for so long!
I personally liked the slapstick (hey, I love cartoons, so it figures). It was really funny when Will came out of the wheel and was like "I'll save you" or whatnot and fell down. The old jokes were over-played in this sequel, though: the rum, the wall-candle, the prisoners, etc., etc.
The problem was that the story was confusing and the end MAKES you see the third one coming out next year.
The graphics were well-done, pretty realistic (ignoring the fantasty demeanor of some characters). I just didn't like how they made Jack flip a few times in the air with the stick on his back. That part was really bleh and plainly fake.
Still, it was a good watch and I definitely will see the third one! _________________ Left for FAC, Right for DA |

I loved the movie. I thought it was great, not quite as great as the first movie though. I think perhaps they used a little too much animation, with alot of things. It didn't quite strike as 'real' as the first movie did, even with its undead cursed pirates on the Black Pearl.
When I went to see Dead Man's chest, me my brother, his gf and our friend Robbly went dressed as Pirates. It was most fun, especially since we got to go 'ARRRRR!' at alot of people.
Plus, walking in public wearing a worn pirate outfit and other various pirate things (my brother carried our flag) is amusing. Some people went 'ARR!' us, other just stared oddly at us. |

I liked POTC 2. The special effects were really nice (Davey Jones!!!) I also liked the reference to the Ride at Disneyland when they were in Tortuga. Maybe it wasn't the greatest movie, but it was still very entertaining. ^^ _________________ I have magical female powers

Considering they redid the ride, they had to. Or else build an entirely new one. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

I believe part of that might be because I don't think he's solely CG. :\ This is just a guess, but considering a lot of films first shoot a real actor first then CG them afterwards (unlike other films like Final Fantasy, which is just pure cg)... I think that's what they did here, so the movements would definitely be more realistic. |

Yeah... I'd kind of assumed he was an actor with heavy makeup, CG tetacles, and a lot of comuter retouching.
This is just guessing, but I'd say at the very least he was done with motion capture. _________________

Yeah, it's Bill Nighy in costume then edited afterwards. Otherwise imdb would say (voice) as well. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

What can I say, I enjoyed it. Maybe it's a guilty pleasure as everyone's so "omfgitsukedlykettly!" It was a decent adventure story. Maybe a little over-the-top, but so what? It got the job done. _________________ "I've got a sticky Darodo!"

I wanted to like this movie so bad.
The first one, for me, is like a holy text of sorts. A revered tome of the ancients from which knowledge can be gleaned. To watch it is to stare into every boys deepest desire; for who doesnt wish to sail the high seas, claiming gold doubloon and partaking in many a swashbuckling adventure?
Yes, its slightly askew. Yes the entire movie is presented with its tongue tucked firmly into its cheek; but it is these qualities which make it so irresistible. To watch it makes me a young and starry-eyed lad once more.
It is sacred in its purity and I am wholly devout to its teachings.
Now, let us move onto its sequel
First of all (and this was THE major flaw, in my opinion) I saw nothing new being brought to the table. Yes, running gags can be funny, but when you find your film constantly dependent on references to jokes from the previous installment, it becomes stale fast. The plot (if we can call it that) was dodgy and unclear at times, moving (or perhaps limping, we could say) at a broken and uneven pace. I am assuming that all the questions posed in the second move (the origins of the Black Pearl, why did Jack trade in his soul to Davy Jones for 13 years as Captain, just what the hell is up with Mr. Jones anyways?) will be answered in the third intallment, but I felt myself questioning these thing at inopportune times during the movie, which sincerely hindered my efforts to simply enjoy it.
Secondly, character development was all but nonexistent. Davy Jones, though an impressive specimen of special effects, was nothing more than Captain Barbosa with a squid slapped on his head. In contrast to the undead denizens of the first film, Jones crew was one dimensional and entirely lacking in any memorable qualities other than appearance. Will Turner was as nobly boring and infuriatingly predictable as ever, and Jacks antics, though always amusing, seemed less crafty and clever and more bumbling and inept. In fact, the only time I saw a bit of the ol Jack Sparrow Flavor was when the poor sod got eaten by the kraken.
Also, and I say this purely out of principle: Jack and Elizabeth need to fuck so hard.
Why? Because Jack + Elizabeth = Fireworks, while Will + Elizabeth = Brain Aneurism, if brain aneurisms truly can be brought on by crappy scenes literally sopping with romantic clich. There was an usher on hand with mop and bucket and the people in the first three rows were futilely wringing their clothes out in disgust even as more ill-conceived sap was doused upon them. I saw this with my own eyes; do not even attempt to call me a liar.
Finally, the special effects were over the top to the point of being ludicrous. This is a pirate movie. At no point do we need highly choreographed acrobatic displays set 10,000 feet above the ground with the help of state-of-the-art computer generated graphics and a team of expertly trained Tibetan warrior monks. Give me the naught-to-be-seen naval battle I so longed for in this movie and leave the intricate rope ballet to Cirque Du Soleil.
I will say this, though: The cliffhanger ending did much to sate the gaping wounds left by that movie; and with a certain characters sudden and highly unexpected return (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), hope for the future is bright indeed.
I really wanted to enjoy this movie, but all the glossy special effects in the world couldnt hide the fact that this film lacked any real substance. _________________

Not much to say about this one. Same as the other movie. The characters don't develop and the acting is as bad, if not worse than that of Dicaprio or Winslet in Titanic. I laughed at whoever mentioned that the plot of the 2nd was too far on the fantasy side... and the first wasn't? I thought Johnny Depp was pretty good in the first one, not so much in this one. _________________ |
