M.C. Esher is my favorite artist of all time. He has combined the complexities of geometry with the appeal of line and shading to create some of the most abstract tesselations and optical illusions know to man. Many of you may be familiar with a few pieces of his more popular work, but every single piece of art done my this man is, in my eyes, a master piece. What I wouldn't have given to meet him...
Hand with Reflecting Sphere 1935 Lithograph
This self portrait is an example of how he likes to take an odd perspective on the world through a seemingly ordinary object. Not the standard self portrait you'd expect from most other artists.

Puddle 1952 woodcut in black, green and brown, printed from 3 blocks
Yet another example of odd perspective can be seen in this woodcut. The focus seems to be on the trees, yet the viewer is not even peering toward the trees what so ever.

Sky and Water I 1938 woodcut
Ahh, look familiar? One of Escher's numerous tesselations. In this one, one object transforms into another, as is the case for so for many other of his tesselations.

Symmetry Drawing 42 1941
In this tesselation, there is no transformation, but rather a number of related objects interlocked with one another.

Relativity 1953 Lithograph
You didn't think you'd get away with viewing this thread and not seeing this picture, did you? It's all in the viewer's perspective.

Reptiles 1943 Lithograph
Okay, last one. I promise. There are so many more I'd like to list, but you can just view the gallery portion of the website posted above if you're interested. This particular piece is my absolute favorite. It combines both Esher's use of realism and his amazing tesselation work.

And thus concludes the M.C. Escher tour. The bathrooms are on your left, and the gift shop is to the right of the soda machine. Thank you. _________________ |

My mum is dutch and always loved Escher too.. She introduced me into his work when I was only ickle and I loved his work ever since.. My dad was the artsy one and my mum just introduced me into some other artists so that's how it kinda worked for me.. She would encourage me to do like schoolwork and stuff about his pieces and I would but we only had the local library as a source of info and they didn't have much on him But what I did find, I always loved.
I didn't think you'd be so into Escher, Amy.. really.. I don't know. I love your vector art and your pixel work has even won awards.. I know this is intelligent work and so is Escher's but.. I never linked you too.. now I know better :D
This, I found quite amusing.. Found it some time ago <3

Just like the hands one..
Can you guess it's name? ;)
Btw the Reptlies piece.. I always adored. My favourite too. The lines and the shapes so neat.. you can see playful character within the reptiles' faces. Such beautiful shading in the objects, too. |

I may be into drawing comercial-type digital art and such, but I'll always appreciate those masters of realism and charcoal (or in this case, lithograph and woodprinting). I have so many of his prints that I don't even have enough places to hang them. I have the hands, reptiles, and his self portrait in a sphere, along side 12 extra prints from an old 2004 wall callendar that I plan to one day tear out and frame. There's just something about his work that combines imagination and tallent in a way I could never imagine.
This isn't mine, but I found it on DA a long long time ago. I think it's what got me into pixel art in the first place.

I love Escher so much. His work never ceases to amaze me. That's half the reason I'm not doing so well in Math; my math teacher has a bunch of posters and prints of his tesselations up on the back wall, so I'm always looking at those and not the notes I'm supposed to be paying attention to. _________________

That guy was a friggen genius. I've always loved his work! ^_^ Got a few posters of them up in my room.
That one with the staris just blows my mind every time I see it... same with that waterfall. And the hand holding that ball mirror thing.. simply genius. There's no other way to say it. |

We got acquainted with E. very well at art class in school, our teacher is obsessed with him and just starts giggling when she talks about it. We had 2 art projects based on his works. Most people did butterflies and fishes. I think i did cups of tea along with fat people inbetween. It was neat!
I especially like the reptiles, because once, i helped my classmate construct them on a metal pencilcase. She is very thrilled about nature and maths, so she kinda pulls me along a bit. Sometimes, its rare to find people interested in such things. At least at the age between 15-18. Well, at least in Slovenia. |

Escher is one artist that I can say influenced my art...you can kind of see it in my more abstract art, like these...

I guess he inspired my love of surreal images that have a mathematical quality to them...I used to look at his art when I was little and just try to put myself in those strange worlds...it was really fun. |
