I meant, why use new words from a different language when we've already got words for them in our own?
I think the fangirl population is way to high to count. Most of them don't even know how to properly comment
Yeah, most of the comments I see by fangirls are commenting with things like "Kawaii!" or "Bishie! h0t!" and "chibi". When I first came here, I was like, "Whadda heck are you talking about?" I had to figure it out and now it's starting to get annoying. I think it's okay for Japanese peeps to say it, but non-Japs who obsessively use the word get kinda annoying. But I'm not saying they're stupid or mean or anything, it's just how they talk/comment. Not how I like it, but everyone has different preferences and likes. They like what they like, I like what I like. _________________ Left for FAC, Right for DA |

We don't, though. In most circles, shounen/shoujo ai and yaoi/yuri are used to specifically refer to anime and manga. Other terms for homosexual couplings, like "slash," are used to describe things that are NA or European in origin, like some movies and books (like HP).
And lyser's right. Why complain about this when you won't complain about other words? It's terribly hypocritical of you. Double standards. Fail.
And lastly, DG is also right. Why'd you guys randomly decide that this was a great place to complain about how much you dislike shounen ai (because I almost guarantee you've never seen actual yaoi). Homophobes. :|
I've already said my piece on fangirls (which is why I think this thread is almost utterly useless; all it's good for is for people to make one statement about the issue then leave and never post again, otherwise they'd be reiterating the same things over and over again). :|
EDIT: Pauline makes a better statement than you, Miriam. She refers specifically to the fangirls while you've been generalizing about FAC. And she hasn't been complaining about genre labels, which is FAC specific. Besides, most circles involved in anime already have experience/knowledge with the terms, so I still don't see what you have to complain about. I think you're complaining just for the sake of complaining. _________________

Well, I guess we complain about these words because they're not used in public conversations. Things like pizza, lasagna, etc are foods, and we don't have another word for them. Also, it's in the dictionary...
About the yaoi: at first, I had no clue what it was. I clicked, I found out. Now, when looking at thumnails or searching, it doesn't tell that it is. Just happens. *shrugs* I'm not saying it's (completely) bad, but it's becoming somewhat of a trend among artists.
Stereotyping is bad...I'm sorry if I have, but I know that there are fangirls out there not at all like the box their label has put them in. _________________ Left for FAC, Right for DA |

Your right. I have a friend who loves Naruto beyond belief. However If you don't bring up the subject you would never know that she has an obsession. They either lead totaly normal lives like the rest of us, or they're realy good at hiding things. _________________

I don't fangirl over characters, I just like them. In the same way that I like zombies, coelacanths, and bad horror movies.

I am a thick action line and architecture fangirl. Give me a well designed enviroment and some fighting and I'll write you a "Mary Sue" fanfic (And proceed to get flamed by construction workers!!!) _________________ |

Well, I had to comment on this, as I see it everywhere (the complaints)...
Yes, I am a fangirl to an extent. My thing is, I do look at drawings and some of certain anime males are 'hot', but I don't see how saying that is different from seeing a drawing of a pretty girl and calling her 'pretty'. Yes, I know these guys are not real, but don't remember ever saying that I think or act like they are, either. I have a fanmade character with an existing one, as it's strictly fantasy. It's how I'd want my lifestyle to be, only it's on paper, since the odds marring a rich guy with a sportscar and living a perfect life is not something likely to happen. It's the whole "girl with cute guy with nice car and perfect life" thing...something that's practically unheard of in real life. Doesn't mean that I don't have a life. It's fantasy...the scenario. A dream...something that won't happen. Nothing wrong with that. It's not like I have virtual fights with people
"OMG!! He's mine!! You can't have him!!!" I don't do that.
What I do isn't much different from a girl who has fantasies of Orlando Bloom or someone of that nature. My 'act' is just on paper, not in real life. It's the lifestyle that I'd love to have, not the actual 2D guy.
As for yaoi, I'm not into it, but I'm not going to bash it, either. People have different preferences. I'm sure I can find something that anyone here or anywhere else likes and dispise what they like, but I won't go calling them names or anything...real or fake. _________________ Fools aren't born; pretty girls make them in their spare time.
