Hellsing randomy thew in a few black extras, like the newscaster watching the snuff film that Alucard ate, and the first guy Seras saw turn into a ghoul.

There was that Brazilian guy in the manga that Alucard fought... I think he was called the "Dandy Man" or something like that.

Then there's always Under Grand Hotel, it's inspired by the TV show Oz and set in an American prison... But it's fairly obscure and a hardcore gay smut comic, so not many people have heard of it. Razz

Naw, he was Brazilian, but half the characters mentioned in this topic aren't black either.

Has anyone mentioned Chocolove from Shaman King yet?

i was going to, but i couldn't remember the little guy's name for the life of me.

on another note, Ryu/Ryo is blatantly spanish/mexican in the dub. it's pretty funny to me, because i'm spanish.

I love Ryo/u/whatever so much. Dub or not.

I never quite understood how the dubbers went about choosing ethnicities for their characters... It's a show about people coming in from all over the world and the only two who have accents are the thug and the Chinese kid.

Chinese kid talking like an Englishman I'll accept. Hong Kong was taken by the English empire back in the day so it all makes sense in a kind of convoluted way. I just don't get why the English kid can't talk like an English person. Ryu's voice is far too fitting to his character, so I have no complaints about that one. I just kinda wish that Faust had an accent... German voices <3

I guess if just dark skinned characters in general count there's that whole native tribe in Shaman King... Even though they're the whitest natives I've ever seen in my life. And I've met some pretty white natives.

Fun fact: The "B" blood type is so rare that it did not even exist in the people of North America until they started interbreeding with white settlers. In those random little infovomits people stick on the net about anime characters, Silva's blood type is listed as "B"

There's this one really crappy Amerimanga that I read a while back called Last Hope. Or something. One of the lead characters is Irish. :/

But that "manga" was so shitty and unmemorable, I don't think she counts. 8D

You know, at first I was all, like, 'there are lots black peoples in anime.' Than I realised I was thinking about comic books. Oops.

Lol, I like how Nick Fury is black now. I mean, he is black in Ultimate. It suits him real well, I think.

Hmm... do kinda anime-art style made-in-japan video games count? Because I was thinking Rude. He is totally the man. And Hugo and his mum (from Suikoden III which has a manga) are, like, native-y looking. More tanned skin then dark, I guess. And Uubu (I cannot remember his dub name) in DBZ is some kinda dark-ish islander.

Eh, there are not a whole lot of black guys in Japan, I guess. Instead of the token black character they have, maybe, the token caucasian (exactly the same but with red or blond hair) and the token islander (exactly the same but w/ tannish skin).

Video games tend to have a lot more characters of darker ethnicities than anime and manga do. MGS II has Fortune and Scott Dolph. Zelda has Ganondorf and the Gerudos, who are intended to have that Arab-nubian look, I believe. The Ritos were supposed to be reminiscent of Native American tribes, ignoring the fact that they're bird people...

Breath of Fire had Karn.... Brock from Pokemon had fairly dark skin, but I think he was still supposed to be of Asian origin (anyone remember how Brock was a white guy with red-pink hair in Pokemon Red and Blue? Razz ) All of the characters in Sphynx and the Cursed Mummy are Egyptian (or at theast the ones that aren't animal people), Prince of Persia has Farrah.

All those fighting games have a ton of characters from all over the world. Street Fighter's got Balrog, Dee Jay, T. Hawk, Dudley, Elena, Sean Matsuda, Mike, Urien, and Dhalsim. Fatal Fury/King of Fighters has Tizoc (he looks kinda white in the artwork, but he's supposed to be Mexican), Marco Rodriguez, Michael Max, Lucky Glauber, Heavy D, Seth, and I think Bob Wilson (There's some KoF guy named Bob who's a Jamaican).

Those are the only fighting games I'm really familliar with... I know Guilty Gear has Venom, but he's dark in a drowish way (dark skin/white hair)

And hey, you can't talk about black characters in Final Fantasy without mentioning Barret.

The only african american person in anime that I saw was in FullMetal Alchemist in one of the first shows. The character was in some library or something.

The only thing I could think of are random dark skinned guys from DBZ and Barret from FF7.
Boondocks, tho great, isn't anime.

Back on topic,

Pedro from Excel Saga
Nabeshin from Excel Saga and its spinoff Puni Puni Pomei
Matsushiro Ken from Yakitate Japan
I found that the Boondocks is consider Anime! It should be becuase Anime needs more diversity of nationalities. Check out my own Anime Character, her name is Jasline and she's Black(Multiracial)

There was the deputy of the Red Ribbon army. Something like Major Black. Don't remember really.
