Should Main Characters Die?

Actually, I have heard of stories where when THE main character dies, they dub a new main character that may or may not have anything to do with the old character.

ib think main characters should die. Like in anime's...so they could stop the neverending anime. Like yugioh or sailormoon. Too many shows. And it seems like they are reusing the sameplot in every movie or show.

I think that some of the Main characters should die because emagine a huge explosion and the whole planet explodes and then the hero (main character) just turns up, i mean the main character should of died if the whole planet exploded in a 5000 mile radias and all of those peices of planet flying everywhere, then the hero going out into space. woo Anyways the main character has normally got a teleportation power whatever she/he is so everyway you could think of they would get out alive. (apart from when they are asleep but they never are asleep when everyone else is so all the main characters friends would be looking out for the enemy.

WOW i've been rambling lol! anyways i think sometimes the main characters should die (lol i could have just said that at the beginning) LMAO!

[size=12][/size]i believe it is good when some characters die, but sometimes, the creator of the show is just CORNY!! Like when Haku and Zabuza died, i mean i laughed because of the whole hilarity of it. Seriously!! Give them some dignity!! Then i laughed some more later because people told me they were actually crying. No offense to anyone who did cry, thats just my opinion, being a girl very much amused by carnage.

In wolf's Rain, i was annoyed. It was like watching final destination, you never knew who was gonna go next. Death in excess and a slaughtering of ALL of the characters isnt good either. (though the effects on darcia were great) Kiba was literally a foot away from the gate to paradise, and he just dies....IT WAS SICKENING!!! AND HEARTBREAKING!!! I was on the verge of tears and thats not a state i am usually in...

Basically, to conclude, i say death is needed for there to be new life in the case of many shows, and the killing of a main character can sprout a whole new revitalized series, but dont kill everything!!

I didn't like it when Zabuza died... he was a neat character, but Haku was annoying and pretty much a walking talking Zabuza drone.. so yeah.. they did it alright I geuss, Iit was kind of sad. I mostly felt bad for Zabuza...

Anyway, I think some main characters should die, and some shouldn't. And no, it's not just an "I like this character! Don't kill them!" thing, either. :< If it's a supporting character, it may be a necessary plot point. And if it's an anime/manga where the characters are getting involved in really dangerous things (insane fights, demons, monsters, etc.), it's pretty likely that someone would die. It would be weird if someone didn't, really.

I don't think main characters should die. I was reading some internet spoiler for Fruits Basket, and something happened where Tohru fell and the author of the site said Tohru dies! I was in shock! It would ruin everything!

She doesn't really die, though. She was just unconscious.

I don't favor having main characters die. It means they never come back. Side characters are ok. Like in, and sorry if this is off topic, The Lion King, when Mufasa dies, it's said and all "SAY IT ISN'T SO!" but it's kind of the basis for the theme of the story.

So I guess sometimes it's needed, but I don't like it.

akourse a main char should die! i know people have already said this a lot but Yusuke from YYH dies multiple times, each time driving the series on! and it's not just Yusuke's death in YYH that totally drive the series!

first, of course Yusuke dies in the first episode, without that there'd be no series! THEN Genkai is killed by Toguro Ototo, which makes Yusuke angry and gives him more reason to fight, THEN the same Toguro "kills" Kuwabara, which makes Yusuke even angrier and allows him to reach his "truuuuuuue pooooowers" (oooooo) and defeat Toguro in the Dark Tournament Finals. THEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN Yusuke does the same thing for Kuwabara, Hiei and Kurama in the 3rd season wif Sensui! (man he just keeps on dying, doesnt he? well.....i guess he wasnt really dead that time in the 3rd season, but whatever.)

i've never seen past the first........3-4 episodes of the 4th season so i dont really know what happens there ^^ i've heard Yusuke dies 3 times and i can only count two so.....mehh. they also just seem to make the series more interesting

Should main characters die? If it helps the plot/story line, then yes. But just killing them for the sake of something different/shock factor is absolutely ridiculous.

Main Characters- and characters in general should only die if they're interesting and loveable. The death of a character everyone hates/is annoyed by usually isn't satisfying or interesting at all. :S

Actually, I thought that the Wolf's Rain ending was one of the best. Probably because they got reincarnated [or something of the sort] and then they're just off to find Paradise again. It gives the story a beautiful end, yet a fresh new beginning.

And, uh, things like Yuusuke and Goku don't quite seem to count, at least not to me. I mean, if you DIE, and then there's an afterlife, there's still a story and plotline, and the char. is just somewhere else.
By dying, I'd prefer the definition to be completely done, deceased, etc.

I think it's a nice touch, when appropriate. For example, and this is from a game instead of anime, sorry, but when Zelos of Tales of Symphonia died, the last words and knowing his background really made me look at the entire thing and the character in a whole new light. And as my interest in him had been lagging, suddenly having an option where he died really suddenly bolstered my interest in him again.

As long as it's reasonable and explanatory, and the results are appropriate; yeah, they're good.

I think that its ok for the main character to die as long as its for a good reason. Like in gungrave when harry kills his best friend brandon in the middle of the series. Brandon died a martyr's death but later down the series harry finds out that brandon was revied and is tring to stop him. But its nothing like when goku or yusuke was revied in this case brandon only had a limited time to live and then die again.

I mean, sometimes more people will flock to the show if there are deaths.
I know that I make alot of my characters die.

If you kill a bishounen/bishoujo character that everyone likes of course fans will be sad, but then that gives a good basis for fanfiction.
Alot of people like it if the main character dies because then they can somehow make that a good thing, if they tell other people about the anime, and some of the storyline, others may get interested.

If they die for a stupid reason like "Oh no, I got thrown into a wall, I'm dead" or "Oh no, my mother passed out, I'm gonna go kill myself!"

Heres a good example, in the commentary for the FullMetal Alchemist DvD #7; either the character dies then a few episodes later they are like"I dided, but I'm back for some unexplained reason!" or something like that, or how they said when a character is finally gonna die it takes them 4 episodes to do so.

It's just like with books. If the genre matches, the main character should die. If it fits properly into the storyline, the character should die. If it's a happy-go-lucky anime and everything's all fine and cheerio, then of course not. But if it's a dark anime where things are not so good, then possibly. It all depends on the storyline and genre really. If it doesn't fit, I don't like it. Simple as that.
