I hate to make a thread after only the pilot, I suppose it could take a nosedive and royally suck considering it's Showtime, but I doubt it. Michael C. Hall doesn't suck. Ever. And it's 99% HBO crew anyway.
For those who don't have Showtime, like myself, and may have missed the pilot (though thanks to some lovely people, you can find it on the interwebz), Dexter is a blood splatter analyst in Miami and a serial killer who murders bad guys on his own to cope with his urges to kill. Kewl, ya?
Michael C. Hall is that guy who played David on HBO's Six Feet Under (that they've been promoting the hell out of on bravo). The uptight gay little brother...who turns into an uptight slut.
Really interesting format, what with the narration.
Only one I don't like is Lauren Velez playing the Ltd. She'll always be Dr. Gloria Nathan to me, and it's not nice of her to cheat on O'Reily.

Interesting setup, to be sure. Now to attempt to give some comments without spoiling anything.. so..
I find the enthusiasm some of these people have to be incredibly funny. 'specially the part where he was telling the cop about all the blood patterns.. Dexter's sister is adorable in her insecurity but her reliance on him annoys me a bit. I hope we'll see her develop as the series progresses. _________________ Go Yankees! |

I just love Michael, in everything he does. He's got a certain...energy and conviction to all his roles. Intensity. I really hope they manage to make use of such a promising premise and don't screw it up like Showtime usually does.
And I loved how excited he got over the blood too. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Hm, perhaps. I rewatched the ice cream scene a couple times for the wording, and it does indeed sound like he never gave it a try.
Back to the sister, she better come up with some ideas of her own pretty soon, 'cause otherwise she has no business in homicide and it's a bit stupid to have her constantly taking Dexter's ideas.
Looooove the doll at the end. "Kinda like 'hey, wanna play?'...and yes, I wanna play. I really really do."
And on a completely superficial note, Michael C. Hall spent so much time scowling and pouting on Six Feet Under, I never noticed he has such a great smile. If Sho doesn't fuck it up, Dexter could join House and PB in my little group of love. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Aah~ If you're on google you could do something like "dexter showtime -laboratory" so that it's filters out pages with that word on it. _________________ Go Yankees! |

Nah, didn't have to (though I know I could) 'cause it's only had the pilot, so really all there is is the official Showtime page, which does come up in the top five. It's just that it also brings up a million other dexter's lab things. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

His sister really annoys me. She got to me in the first episode but I figured I would get used to her. She sucks. I think it's mainly the actress playing her... _________________ |

It's partially the actress and partially how she's written to be so needy and helpless. Oh yay, you're on Homicide, all you did was take Dexter's ideas and say you came up with it, YAY 4 U!
I always hate main characters, though, so I can live with Deb. She'll just join Sara on PB, Foreman and Cameron on House, Nate/Ruth/Claire/Rico on Six Feet Under (lolz the only characters I liked were Michael C. Hall's David and Billy), and so on.
I like Angel, though. Reminds me of Morales from Oz. Same guy, similar personality.
Lauren Velez isn't wowing me as the Lt. either. Her acting was a lot better on Oz, she doesn't play strong woman in charge very well.
Teenage Dexter annoys me 'cause his eyes are the wrong color.

I haven't been able to see the show yet, but I absolutely adored the books. Lindsay did a fantastic job of creating a truly lovable psychopath. Dexter has charm, humor, smarts (hell, a lot of that)...but he's also a cold-blooded killer. And yet, I don't mind one bit. Granted, he IS a serial killer. But he's a very "noble" one, in the sense that he kills other of the like. It's a win-win situation.

That's too bad. I was looking forward to having some cool chick play Deb...but I guess that if she sucks we can always go back to Dexter and be happy.
Have they gotten much into his relationship with Rita, or her kid? Because that's an interesting one in its own right... _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

Yeah, they do a lot with Rita and her kids. Plot-wise they're quite faithful to the book, but the timeline as far as what's talked about when is a bit altered and the episodes are padded with additional crime type stuff to make each episode not just about the main plot.
You'll like Michael C. Hall. He's the perfect Dex. Even Devon Graye (teenage Dex) is pretty good, but in more of a big eyed uncertain "uh, I kinda wanna kill things, is that cool?" way.
Jennifer Carpenter (Deb) has her moments, but the script edits together a little weird for her character. Three whole episodes and she does very little besides complain about wanting to be in Homicide and milking Dex for his ideas so she can use them as her own. Ep 3 was a little better, she took some initiative to figure things out on her own. The dynamic between them is good, but she doesn't have near the appeal of Michael as Dexter.

8D Can't wait. The first was great, the second just as good...except I thought that it was even just a little more macabre. The Dex I'm used to cuts up people when they're basically dead. I was grossed out by the fact he was dealing with another serial killer who forced people via mirror to watch themselves get cut apart/open alive. Yuck. _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

Welcome. I love when good books are turned into [high quality] tv instead of movies. A Dexter movie would be way too short and superficial. Silence of the Lambs/Red Dragon/Hannibal are good movies but lack so much depth of the books. TV gives 'em 12+ hours to translate the story instead of 2. Not sure if they're planning on doing a season per book or spacing it out differently. Shall be interesting.
Oh, and here's the summary for Dexter in the Dark.
Is evil alive...? Dr Jerry Halpern is trying to find out, studying for his PhD on the subject. Dexter Morgan, meanwhile, has a few wicked things of his own to contend with - not least, planning his wedding to Rita to complete his nice-guy disguise. But when a student of Halpern's is found burnt, molested and headless - seemingly sacrificed to an ancient god - and Dex is brought in as forensic analyst to help investigate, he realises he could be dealing with someone a whole lot more sinister than he is. Soon it seems the dark passenger in Dexter's head has gone into hiding. And when something creeps out your friendly neighbourhood serial killer, you know it's serious... As Halpern and Dexter are stalked by death, it looks like it's getting personal - especially as Dex now has a family to protect. Gradually, Dexter realises his stepchildren might share his extra-curricular interest in death. Could he help them target their bloodlust, just as he steers his own? But to do that, Dex must cope with a certain mutilated sergeant from his past, and more importantly...stay alive...
_________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hellz yah...I always did love the fact that at the end of the book, Dex starts to look to Rita's youngest boy--damn, forgot his name--as a future protege. Exceeelent...
But I am slightly worried...Do you think they'll make Dexter human? _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

I hope not. I think...I hope...it'll be a nice little glimmer of humanity that contrasts all the cold, calculating bits. Like, um, trying not to make a Prison Break comparison, but like cold-ruthless-charming Bagwell gets upset over the murder of his cousin and cousin's son, but deals with it by trying to kill the person who arranged it. It's just another level that enhances what was already there.
Hopefully.
It'd be a shame to mess with such a good characterization. Summaries always simplify things so poorly, and I do like the idea of something being so twisted it even gives Dex the creeps, so long as he gets over it and is still the delightful little serial killer we know and love. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. ...That's a very fair and resonable point; it would be nice to see Dexter retain something resembling a little bit of humanity. He did so in the second book (Dearly Devoted) with helping Deb find her boyfriend, so I guess that does say something.
As long as he continues to stay on the path of a serial-killer who kills serial killers, I'm cool.
Oh: Watched the first episode. You're right. Hall does a great job as Dexter. I have to say I had been thinking of Dexter as a little different as first--not as dark a voice,--but it works all the same. He'll do well with that part.
And Deb? Eh. She doesn't bother me as much as I would have thought. Yes, the acting of the woman does need a little work, but the character I feel more sympathy for than anything else. She feels slightly cowed by the fact her brother is so much smarter than her, and in a sense that's why Deb tails Dexter whenever he has "a hunch."
Rita's family is great.
...I have to admit that the teenage version of Dexter was just a little off, which was mildly irking. Nothing big.
My only real gripe (and this is it, I swear), is Dexter's methods. Of course, it's a show, and (of course) it will not follow the book religiously. I understand that. Nevertheless, I'm more annoyed with the Dark Passenger's methods than anything else. In the book, Dexter is meticulously clean and neat, and when he's confronting his prey, he wears clothes that he can easily chuck afterwards and not leave any evidence of his being there. First killing: he's wearing a long sleeved t-shirt, and although there are gloves, that's it. In novel-time, he's dressed in all white, and no one can see a face. Here, everyone can see a face. Obviously that's done to introduce the character to the audience earlier, but it still bugs me...
Otherwise? I dig it. _________________ What does it all MEAN? |

I am really getting into this one. I love how he manages to keep girlfriend Rita's mind off of sex by getting foreful with her whenever she decides she is in the mood.
The only real gripe I have about this one is that I don't speak Spanish. I don't know anybody who speaks Spanish. But there are no subtitles when the characters on the show are speaking Spanish. |
