Because everybody who likes guns and owns a gun is obviously a crazed murderer, right? Please. I'm sorry something traumatic like this happened to you, but making stupid generalizations like that that have no factual basis really take away whatever emotion I may have felt for you in your situation. In that case if I beat some one over the head with a guitar are guitars evil?
If I beat some one over the head with a remote are remotes evil?
If I beat some one over the head with a hard cover book are books evil?
If I beat some one over the head with a skillet are skillets evil?
If I beat some one over the head with a trashcan are trash cans evil?
You are an idiot hippie tree hugger who can't except the fact its not about the guns its about the PEOPLE.

...so much generalization happening in this place.
Yeah, hammers, remotes, and kitchen knives will never be controlled, because for one, they have a practical value for activities other than say, hurting people, animals, or recreation that reanacts the first two point. There are two major differences between common household items and guns, whether it is for hunting, collection, or for military, it is that they are usually collected because of the image associated with them. People like to feel empowered against animals, humans, the law enforcement. It is usually considered a personal choice, a freedom, a right, to own and actively use these guns. However, many developed countries disallow personal ownership of contemporary high-effeciency handguns or rifles, because the pros counter the con.
Guns, no matter how many people will claim that it is the person that makes the choice to use them, not the gun, but to the victim of gun violence, the difference is nil. It is much less likely for a person to use other potential weapons such as kitchen knives or a mallet because long-range weapons are much less impersonal, and going back to the previous point, because of the cool-man image associated with the guns. Don't get me wrong. I know that using guns do not spur violence, for instance, countries like Israel and South Korea, the only two industrialized country with mandatory conscription, have very low gun death and murder rates. Almost all citizen of the respective countries learn how to use guns and other arsenals, but the difference is that the people are more educated, and there are no guns circulating in the society other than strictly for security, by highly trained people.
There's a two valid school of thoughts on this subject. Pragmatists and Libertarians. Both have valid points, and most people sit on the fence in these issues. The Pragmatists believe that it is useful to keep guns out of the general society because for one thing, it is not an essential human right such as freedom of expression or right to humane treatment. They also believe that statistics are more important than the fundamental facts about the gun itself. Meaning, statistics of have and have-not countries of gun death are much more valid than any conjectures about "Guns don't kill people, people kill people". On the other hand, Libertarians believe that Guns should be legal and free to sell and trade because it does not infringe on anyone's right, nor is it the part of the gun's design that makes people break the law.
On this issue of guns, I do side with the pragmatists, I'm all over the board in terms of politics, (generally left-leaning overall but,) and I believe that the pragmatists make better point about gun control than the Libertarians. Now, I do side with the Libertarians in terms of drugs and pornographic materials of any kind, but that's a debate for another time. _________________ "Sarah's future makes me sad." - Benk |
