Shaman King is an OLD AS HELL OMG YOU'RE STUPID FOR BRINGING IT UP WITH THE NEW series.

Hey! I love Shaman King. (manga mostly or the japanese anime)

Back on track though, the only anime I still watch from the "good old days" is probably pokemon. Yes pokemon, I don't care if you think it's stupid and kiddy I still like the series. So to anyone about to make a wise crack, shut it. To every who isn't, thanks for being mature and sensible.

Really though, when pokemon and Gundam Wing and all the others were around I had no idea that was anime. I just thought it was a really good cartoon show. Of course I was like, 5 or something. Ahaha, I remember how much I used to love Sailor Moon. I go back now and the dubbed versions seem so...ick. Too bad we all have to grow up TT_TT

Anime's better than ever. If you watch what's currently in circulation on Toonami or whatever, you're getting pigslop-- OLD pigslop. (lol, eva.)

Better than ever?

Did you even notice how most of the anime titles that came from the late 90's to the present have been all flash and no substance?

There hasn't really been a "true" new concept/story for anime. A majority of the more popular titles now have more or less been a re-hash/re-telling/re-do/base off of an older series or movie. You look at DBZ, and newer fighting titles, and you're just watching DB/DBZ/DBGT all over again, it just looks and sounds different.

If you call CG a major improvement, sure. I'll give that to you, provided that it's used appropriately to enhance the quality of the anime you're watching. But if it's just used to cut corners to make something look "cool," then I'd rather go back to the old-school hand drawn and colored cels.

If you believe that Anime has gotten "better than ever" then you're obviously smoking some powerful sh!te because even Japanese writers and artists in the anime and manga field are calling recent mainstream anime titles (with the exception of some very very few titles), crap.

You don't watch many new series, do you?
Did you even notice how most of the anime titles that came from the late 90's to the present have been all flash and no substance?
Untrue. How many late ninties titles have you seen? Have you ever seen Master of Mosquiton? Now and Then, Here and There? I could name several others, but something tells me you've only grazed the hairs of then and now in terms of aniem. Especially now there are titles with style and substance.
There hasn't really been a "true" new concept/story for anime.
I never said there was. That tends to be the case with everything, though.
You look at DBZ, and newer fighting titles, and you're just watching DB/DBZ/DBGT all over again, it just looks and sounds different.
Untrue. Fist of the North Star came before Dragonball/DBZ. If anything, DBZ is just an extremely static version of Kenshirou's homosexual misadventures in emotional fighting. Though in terms of the "DBZ All over again" thing, I suggest you check out series like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure and Beserk if you haven't already. You'll be in for a pretty refreshing experience.

In defense of the DB franchise though, I loved Dragonball. It was hillarious.

Not an original opinion. Everyone believes that mainstream anime is shitty. I can't disagree- that is, if you're judging Mainstream/Recent anime by shitty magical girl spinoffs and clamp shit. Though I'd rather watch Eureka SeveN instead of Giant Gorg.

edit: Shaman King was Okay.

editx2: Oh, and if you're looking for a new fighting aniem that's really really good, I suggest you check out Hajime no Ippo (manga). Great stuff.

If we're gonna talk about old anime/anime in the late 90s, I always feel the compulsion to mention The Violinist of Hameln.

People have complained that the anime was pure shit in comparison to the manga. I greatly disagree, and I've seen all of the anime and read a bit of the manga.

They're both so vastly different that I wouldn't even bother comparing the two; they're like two separate entities.

But I digress.

The anime? Had a budget so low that they used stills for EVERYTHING and whatever they animated (aside from the first episode), they made sure to reuse. And more than just a few times. But even then, I liked it a great deal. In an effort to make up for the extreme use of stills and panning, they used a lot of interesting angles and the music they chose always fit the mood.

YES CLASSICAL

...I have the feeling I'm still off-topic. Blast.

THE VIOLINIST OF HAMELN HAS THE MOST AWESOMEST STORYLINE AND DIRECTING EVER :FAP:

orite, and there were a lot of other good stuff, too. Like Lost Universe, dammit. and Himiko-den. I also like Wild ARMs TV, too, but I think that one's geared more towards people who are already fans of the games, lol. Oh, oh, and Petite Princess Yucie, though that one's early 2000, not sure. mmm, princess maker x anime. thx gainax <3

People who indulge in "classics" are ironic because they are liking "niche" of the past. Just as in ten years later, the trendy anime will become the new classics. Liking something that might be considered bad in the future makes them feel insecure. they are much more akin to like and consider the old anime as greater than newer ones because less people in their age know about it, thus they feel superior.

You have no taste and have low self-esteem. You try to elevate this by pompously fellating with technically subpar old anime.

So you're weak.

that is all.

ETA: this is directed to whoever was comparing old, old, anime with everything and anything.

(Do most of you continually use words like suck and cuss and other words in real life, or just behind a computer screen? It seems to me that some people get a superiority complex when hiding behind a flashing computer.)

I guess I'm reviving the topic. *shrug* Isn't it that most people hate mainstream things on the outside just because it's mainstream, so most of you all are screaming about hating mainstream anime?

I cuss in real life. I probably do it more in the internet cuz it's easier to do over writing than it is verbally.

I'm slightly more profane in an actual conversation if that matters.

People claim to hate mainstream things simply because they're popular and they think that hating something everyone else likes makes them individualistic and interesting. It carries over to everything else really. Frankly I don't give a fuck. Mainstream anime can be quite good-using recent examples Mushishi, and it can also be very very very very bad- once again, a recent example Higurashi ni naku na kokoro ni or whatever. It's like everything else.

ps: nearly all titles mentioned in this thread are pure shit

Is Mushishi really mainstream?

oh yeah, since they're making a movie out of it.

Ep. 18-26 GET as of yesterday.

It's not as Mainstream as stuff like Gundam SEED and xxxHOLIC, but it's definetly acknowledged by the general anime community- casual watchers, fangirls or otherwise. I think on the most popular series of the year, Mushishi ranked in around eighty or something.

The last few eps of Mushishi were awesomely awesome. That series is never going off my harddrive. <3
