A 2006 summer movie that's rumoured to be even more popular than its direct competition, Miyazaki's Earthsea.
It was released on DVD on the 23. 8D;
Based off a book that's won a Japanese literary award (forgot what it was called, orz) it's a movie about a 10-year-old boy named Wataru. He's bullied at school, has sucky marks, and his father divorced his mother. Shortly after the divorce, Wataru's mother becomes ill and collapses, on the verge of death.
One of the kids at Wataru's school, Mitsuru, shows him a giant door in an abandoned construction site (which is rumoured to be haunted) and tells him that to change his fate, he should travel to the world beyond that door and meet with the Goddess of Fate, a wish-granting goddess.
The world on the other side, Vision, is a fantasy world with talking animals, strange creatures, magic, etc. etc. There, he finds that Mitsuru is also trying to fulfill his own wish and change his fate, but the difference between Wataru and Mitsuru is that Mitsuru will do anything to realize his wish, even if it means killing innocents and destroying Vision.
The animation and soundtrack are really top-notch - the work was estimated to be something like a billion dollars or something. The character designs aren't overly detailed, but I think that's okay for the kind of story this movie's trying to tell.
And the R2 DVD that was released has English subtitles included. IMPORT GOGOGO |

Ahaha, the Earthsea movie sucked, so it wouldn't be hard to find something better. @_@ That being said, I've never heard of this movie before. Sounds interesting though.
Oh, and here's something I never really thought about before - can an R1 DVD player play R2 DVDs? |

Oh, I see. I haven't seen Earthsea (evidently XD) but I assumed it was good - maybe because of the "Miyazaki" tag attached to it? I dunno. XD; I guess he still has a way before he can get as good as his father. X3
I personally thought the plot progressed a bit quickly in Brave Story, but it's still a pretty good story altogether - I wanna read the novel now! XD; I think it was nice seeing how Wataru's relationships with the people he met in Vision (and Mitsuru!) developed. :3
Here's a torrent to a rip of the movie - though it's really high quality (2GB! @_@) so I don't know if you'd be able to get it downloaded anytime soon. @_@ |

Heh, I thought Earthsea was mediocre but still tolerable until I started checking out the Earthsea novel summaries and realized how horribly Ghibli butchered the storyline. D: Gotta admit though, that I love how the male leads in Ghibli films actually sound like guys and not adolescent girls.
Mm, I actually have space on my harddrive for once (who'da thunk?!), but torrents don't work so well here. Hopefully there'll still be seeders around after Christmas. ^^; |

Oh and here I was really looking foward to the Earthsea movie... I'll still see it anyway... when it comes to the states. ><
I'll consider checking out this Brave Story movie as well. It sounds interesting! _________________ I R GRAMMAR NAZI.

...I can't believe I missed this question. OTL
I don't think so, but R0 or All-Region DVD players are availiable in stores, though they're a little more expensive than regular ones. (Then again, regular ones have been going for really, really cheap, so... @_@) I'm not sure if it'll work on a PC dvd drive, but I'll be checking that out as soon as my copy gets here. 8D;

You should! I personally like it more than some of the more recent Miyazaki films that have been released in NA (thinking of Spirited Away moreso than Howl's Moving Castle, though), but people have said my tastes are kinda weird, so. lol. It's overall a really good movie, though - you should at least rent it once it gets to NA, if you're not interested in buying it. My summary hardly even scratches the surface, orz
Even though I bought the R2 dvd, I'm probably gonna end up buying the R1 as well, once it comes out. XD; |

I see. Well, I think my JPS2 ought to be able to handle any R2 DVDs that might cross my path, although I don't think it's very likely that I'll have have cause to watch one. And I can tell you from prior experience that a PC DVD drive can read R2 DVDs, but you have to switch the region to do so.... and you only get a limited number of times to switch before the region gets 'locked' into one setting. D: I totally used up two of my switches to watch Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro last summer. @_@ I wonder if there's a way to get around that somehow... |
