You'll hate me for this.
I don't think nu-metal sucks as a genre. I will say that you will find extremely talented drummers, technically proficient guitarists and bassists, and vocalists with good range and some good lyrics, if you delve deep enough.
For example, Deftones have excellent musicianship. Chi Cheng is a good bassist, the guitar hooks are catchy, and the drumming is powerful. "My Own Summer" displays this quite well, I think.
From the musician's standpoint, nu-metal has some interesting things going for it. The most amazing is the stuff that can keep perfect time/tempo and change everything PERFECTLY. This is why I think System of a Down suck ass, and why Tool and Mudvayne should own the market.
If RHCP is the Zeppelin of the time, then Tool is the Pink Floyd.
Linkin Park? Granted, nothing spectacular except Bennington's vocal range. Other stuff? Much better. Chevelle, Tool, Mudvayne, Number One Contender, Souls Harbor, Deftones, etc. They all have exceptional talent.
Red Hot Chili Peppers have the stuff I love. Funky basslines, great guitar, and steady pulsing drums. Kiedis's voice may not change that often, if ever, but he can give some exceptional lyrics. "Under the Bridge" is a lyrical masterpiece, as it is a guitarists dream to play. Nevermind the simplicity, it just sounds good.[/quote]
But simply having strong musicians here and there does not make good bands if the end product sucks. It means there are some talented musicians within the genre. La di da. Jim Gillette is an amazing singer, better range and more power than anyone singing today, but Nitro? Early Tuff? Psh. He himself is an amazing vocalist, the others all technically proficient, but the band as a whole just doesn't cut it. All the musicians within nu metal may not be hacks, but most of the bands overall are pure garbage.
I agree that Tool is the fanbase comparison of Pink Floyd. Faggy "deep" kids who are too smart for LP but arrive at Tool as their ultimate artistic discovery.
Frankly people are trying to argue two very different things, which is why I said it's stupid without clear points. Because "prove to me why RHCP isn't the best band ever" is very different than "Prove to me why RHCP shouldn't be my favorite band ever". If you LIKE them the best, fine, your favorite band can be the Kidz Bop kids for all I care. But every genre has different requirements. You can't put one against the other without defining what the criteria is in the first place. Which in and of itself is also impossible to do.
Like I said, this is old, and Will just wanted to wank over RHCP for awhile. Trying to definitively argue the point has no end, and it's a very tedious discussion. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |
