lmao, anime anatomy. What an oxymoron.
Anime is stylized, so asking for help on "anime anatomy" is like asking for help on developing an art style. Before trying to do anime art, I suggest you try to learn realistic art and then apply what you've learned to a more stylized cartoony style. _________________ FAC |

I'll try, but I can't draw a decent body in either style. ^^; I practice, but that's just an area where I have lots of trouble. I'm not very good with proportions and poses. >.< |

I'm learning it the Chinese character way.
Find lots and lots of pictures of naked people and copy them lots and lots of times. (Unless you can find lots and lots of people who'll pose naked for you..) _________________ Go Yankees! |

Nobody is at first. Poses are hard. In fact, I still suck at poses. I can do decent anatomy, but that's just when people are just standing there. xD; Just go online and find some good images (anime or realistic, really) and draw them. A lot. Practice is the only way to learn anything, there is no "quick" way that a lot of people seem to think there is. _________________ FAC |

Made this a while ago for someone asking how to draw bodies.
Applicable, I suppose.

Yes, that final picture doesn't seem to match the musculature you gave it in the sketch. I find in most anime that I've seen, the characters are often drawn a lot more skinny and longer than they should be in realism. I used to make the mistake of drawing characters with long limbs or necks, which screwed the proportions over.
I find looking at reference pictures really helps just before drawing the image of the pose you want. |

That's because the last picture wasn't related to the first two in any way... it's a joke...
The only part of it that really matters is the first line. Block in your figures, learn human anatomy.
Remember folks, when you're drawing cartoons the proportions will get skewed and warped, but structure is structure and no amount of "style" excuses you from learning it. _________________

If you need help with anatomy just try simple sketches. Don't try and do poses at first, try just to do a standing figure and keep working until you find the type of anatomy that works for you.
Pretty much everyone who draws anime has a different style.
I would suggest starting out with a "How to Draw Manga" book. They do help alot if you're a beginner, after awhile you're own style will emerge from the style in the book.
I never found much help with mannequins. You should try posing in a mirror, thats what helped me.
By the way, my mannequin only costed 10 dollars _________________ Strive for your dreams...what else is there to live for?

As stupid as it sounds, I still occasionally have problems with characters that are simply just standing. That's because they tend to slant off to one side. I have a hell of a time just fixing it. Talk about crooked perspective. |

Block in the figure before you start filling things in, that way you'll spot any balance problems ahead of time and can fix them before you spend too much time rendering muscles and such. If you're having trouble making the character look grounded, try drawing a grid underneath them. _________________

For that much money I can just grab a decently muscled dude and pay him ten bucks and a pizza to pose for me. Much easier.
Blah blah blah learn real anatomy blah blah

Poser was originally designed to be an artist tool for posing. Today, Poser tries to pass itself off as a 3d character renderer.
DazStudio is a clone of poser (much in the same way GIMP is for photoshop). Sure, you can do some 3d work on it, but you can also use it to help you visualize poses, proportions, anatomy, and camera angles. Think of it as a free, computerized version of woody (the mannequin in kitzy's post).

Poser is ok for getting an idea for the basics of a pose, but it's got so many fatal flaws in the details that people who don't already have a strong grasp of anatomy just end up copying those problems. Especially when it comes to joints and hands/feet. _________________ "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture" - Dexter/Michael C. Hall |

Ok, no one has to pose nude necessarily... LOL It helps to study things in parts... Perhaps, first study your own hands, then see where they join up to your wrist and where the wrist joins up to the arm and the arm to the elbow and so on...
I have found that if I do what are called "gesture" drawings or action sketching exercises first, it makes it much easier to draw parts of a moving person and then you can take the parts you sketch and bring it all together as a whole.
I have drawn dancers, who tend to wear tight fitting clothing... You could also take a sketch pad to a swimming area in the summer when people are wearing swimsuits. You could also look at photographs or pics from websites as suggested above.
Some helpful books for me were (as well as those already mentioned):
Drawing and Painting Fantasy Figures by Finlay Cowan; How to Draw Comic Book Heroes and Villains by Christopher Hart -- also by Hart: Comic Book Bad Guys and Gals; How to Draw Great-Looking Comic Book Women... They are a little bit sexist, but still, great references as far as some basic anatomy and styles... _________________ I believe in the Force... I use a blaster... |

Learn how to draw the REAL human body, nude AND clothed (clothed is SO much harder, fyi) and you'll know how to draw any body. Anime is idealized anatomy, straight, simple lines. _________________ Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you're up to.
Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again...as well it should be. If you're not sure it's dead, put a bunch more holes in it, should fix the problem... |
