NIS being Nippon-Ichi Software. They're the people who have Disgaea, Phantom Kingdom, Phantom Brave, Puppet Princess of Marl Kingdom (Rhapsody in NA), Atelier Iris and whoever else, etc.
Also known as the people who do SRPG and try to include the original voice overs, <3
Anyway, I just had to make this topic because I was playing Disgaea earlier and GOD DO I ever love it.
Even though I find Zetta to be a little more entertaining, Laharl has his awesome moments, too.
Disgaea's a bit different from other NIS games I've played in that it sticks to the oft-used grid system while PK and PB are both free movement~ Still in the first chapter and I still have to beat up Mid-Boss (omg XD;), but I'm so terribly amused already. 8D; I can see why people thought the anime was shitty after playing a bit of this...
And yeah. Thoughts?
Actually, I wanted this to be an umbrella topic about NIS' games, so gogogo! 8D; |

Disgaea is also notable for having a sequel that is almost as good as the original. Although the story and dialogue of Disgaea 2 do pale slightly when compared to 1, they are still exceptional, and the battle system has only been improved--and it was pretty fantastic to begin with.
Disgaea 1, however, will always have a VERY special place in my heart, for having my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE CHARACTER CLASS EVER in it--the Scouts.

Okay. Sorry for the doublepost, but I actually have a question now.
So, Fayore. I was digging through my boxes when I happened across Phantom Brave, and recalling that you liked it although I didn't, I popped it back in.
I'm still not incredibly fond of it, but it's growing on me a little more as I venture farther in. Sadly, I never made it past the Island of Healing Waters during my first lukewarm sally, so now I am only at the part where I'm trying to get the Rainbow Bird for Sienna.
However, that is beside the point.
The question in point is simply this. In Phantom Brave, which are the character classes and weapons you lean towards? My party is beginning to cement, but I'm not sure I like all aspects of it--thus, I inquire.
My core team, I suppose, is Marona, Ash, three Fighters, a Saber Kitty, a Fusionist, and two Healers. Then there are two Archers, a Bottle Mail, and a Merchant who occasionally do time as well. Oh, and a Witch, but I'm not fond of the Witches, so I'm just waiting for another character class that can use Elemental Magic --.--
Marona, having had various staffs fused to her, is currently pwning with a phonograph, which is rather amusing. Ash and one of my Fighters have swords; another Fighter has a dagger; and the last Fighter has a crate. Those crates pack a surprising punch. My Saber Kitty uses weeds and cacti, while my Fusionist uses seeds and flowers. The Healers kick butt. One has a vase--no, her name is not Grune--and the other has a crystal. They usually do more damage than the Fighters ^.^
My Archers have Bombs, my Bottle Mail has a gold staff, and my Merchant has a treasure chest. I'm not particularly fond of the chest, despite how appropriate it is, so I'm searching for something else instead.
Anyways, Fayore, Phantom Brave mistress--please, any tips? Tricks? Suggestions? Criticisms? Habits? Preferences? Words of immensely sagacious wisdom to be imparted to my poor over-Phantomed brain? Anything at all? _________________ Disgaea's Overlords Dance in Worlds Beyond Infinity while Mifuyus Magical Multiplying Mole reads the epic Chronicles of Yord, and you learn that your Craving for Finding a Heart of Snow is Taboo in VG unless you dare undertake The Combine of Sin... |

Ah NIS, one of my favorite companies.
Or so it has become recently.
Disgaea was the first game I bought.
Then I noticed that Phantom Brave was from the same peeps.
So of course I bought it.
And I must say, they both pwn my life.
But then again, I'm a sucker for Tactical games like that, my first being FFT.
I would like to own all of the games that NIS has, but sadly, I am poor and must wait paitently for the cash to come my way.
Didn't NIS also do that game called, uh..
La Pucelle Tactics?
Is it any good? |

Unfortunately, I haven't played any of the La Pucelle games, D;
Re: Phantom Brave
Ahaha, I haven't played that in such a long time... Unfortunately, I can't remember at all. Most of what I remember involves thinking that the battles were really, really hard, though (mostly because of the time limit imposed on the units). XD; I think I usually went with about three main fighters (tanktanktank gogogo!) with a couple mages trailing behind.
Nothing really fancy, if I remember correctly. I don't remember employing any monster types, either - simply because I don't really find them as versatile as the human types. Maybe later I'll load my old game just to get a clear picture of what kind of characters I was using. X3;
Speaking of monsters, though... Just today I created a dragon in my Disgaea game. Didn't use it for very long, though - I'm rather adverse towards new units since that means I have to spare the time to train them up, when I could just use that time to make my tanks into even more powerful tanks. o3o; Which I guess could be a problem since my units don't have too much variety in them. Haven't even "discovered" the scout class yet, though I've seen a few battles where they would have been immensely helpful. :X
Mm, fighter class. <3 Transmigrated one loads of times, and now he's equally as good at using his sword as he is a staff~ I kinda wish I'd left him as the mages long enough to pick up their omega class magics, though, but I guess it can't be helped. D; His spells are pretty powerful as they are. >:3
I think my favourite part, though, is messing around with the senators. I've spent so much time just sitting around bribing the bajeezus outta them, 8D;
But then again, I'm a sucker for Tactical games like that, my first being FFT.
OT, but... FFT 2007 REMAKE YES <3 Raaaamza~ <3 Hopefully it'll only get better, though I think the original's already amazingly good. *__* |

I've played Pucelle Tactics, Disgaea 1 and 2, Makai Kingdom. I might get Atelier Iris tomorrow.

Not particularly. Being the first NIS game, it was obviously the most primitive.
The graphics on FFTactics on the PS1 is better. That alone should give you an idea of how craptacular it is. The 2D of the main characters is gorgeous (in fact, better than any other NIS games), but the maps and monsters... I feel I want to gouge my eyes out.
There is no weapons system. You can arm your character with four sets of swords... but his attack will still be a gun (but will have all the bonusus from all four swords).
The graphics is sloooooow. Everytime you attack, you get a zoom-in of the combat. It looks good, really, but its really time consuming (think attacking, then taking up to 12 seconds to finish per attack due to the amount of animation involved).
Rotten dungeon designs. Sometimes, the "goal" creature is completely inaccessible. Thankfully, they fixed this in later games.
Terrible voice-acting. |

In defense of La Pucelle...
Although the battle system is not spectacular, it is definitely unique and highly intriguing. Never anywhere else have I seen a battle system quite like La Pucelle's, and the oddity keeps the interest even throughout the long fighting animations--which I don't mind, because as a general rule, they are hysterical.
Thus the battle system is decent, and when combined with the hysterical dialogue, the passable if predictable storyline, and one of the best main characters I've ever seen, the game overall definitely passes muster. Granted, it mostly only does so because Prier is the most violent character I've ever seen and screams things such as, "YOU PIG!" and "YOU SUCK!!" at her enemies. Both in and out of battle ^.^
But regardless.
Are they actually remaking FFT?!?! OMG REALLY?!
<33333333333
That is like my all time favorite game!
Oh jeeze, I can't wait.
I have Atelier Iris and I thought it was pretty good at first.
I mean, it's a good game, but I just thought it was too easy.
I progressed through the story way too fast in my opinion.
Oh well.
And the second one just totaly did not apeal to me.
I think that if I can find La Pucelle for under $20, I'll probably buy it.
Just so I can have it.
I wanted Disgaea 2 for Christmas, but when I saw Twilight Princess for GC, I got it instead.
X]
I need to play some Disgaea again. |

I've never played Atelier Iris 1, but I own Atelier Iris 2, and I find it pretty addictive. The battle system is pretty damn unique (NIS is pretty well known for making things "unique", huh) and it's a lot more interesting than the average turn-based battle system. But, it's a really easy game. Most of the battles aren't too bad (except near the beginning when you encounter poisonous enemies, but even then it's not so bad).
also i think felt is adorable so what D8
The storyline so far is pretty standard fare (note that I have not finished this game, either, haha) but just seeing how Felt and Viese work together is really nice and awww-meriting. 8D; Also, the alchemy system is really well-developed. It's cool. <3
I wanna play La Pucelle Tactics, but it's been years since I'd seen that in any stores. :\
Oh, and NIS have a new game, to be released in Japan on the 25th (I wanna order it now~ D8 but maybe I'll just wait until it gets brought over here, which it eventually will, I'm sure). It's called "Soul Cradle: Sekai wo Kuraumono" (The Creatures who Swallow the World, as translated by someone on wikipedia...)
I love the animation they use for loading~ XD;
Anyway, it doesn't look like it's going to be SRPG, but I don't really mind that seeing as Atelier Iris 2 was fine for me... They're using a new artist, too, it seems - the style is definitely not like the ones they have for their SRPG. 8O 2D graphics looking better than ever~ Also, in regards to the plot, I hear that while NIS does generally make light-hearted stories (ah, Disgaea), this one is much more serious (so I guess that's a warning to anyone who didn't like Phantom Brave because it had a serious storyline as opposed to Disgaea's?) - the main character is supposedly merged with a "shadow" that desires to take over the world, hence the title. I think I definitely have to check this one out, too~
Re: FFT
Yes, they have their website up already: Final Fantasy Tactics: Shishi Sensou (The Lion War) and I hear the trailer's pretty nice (it's the one they had during the 2007 Jump Festa, I think) - it's animated some scenes from the original in that quirky I-have-no-nose kinda style, XD I haven't been able to see it, though, since my computer hates flash, or pretty much anything that requires use of its ancient processor. 8l
Yeah. Ever since I found out a couple days ago, I've been spreading the news like wildfire. 8D; That's my most favourite game, EVER.
Unfortunately, it'll be for PSP - which means I'm gonna have to put a hold on that PS3 and shell out some green for this handheld (which also means I'll have a chance to check out Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology! Apparently you can get characters from the other Tales game on your party; I saw a screenshot where the player had both Chester and Refill Raine in their party. 8D;) But yeah. I am definitely going to get this game, no matter what. DX
I think they're also making a sequel to FFT:A for the DS; it's a part of a project they're calling the "Ivalice Alliance" - while the games apparently have no relation to each other besides Ivalice, they're getting stuck together (including FFXII?). 8l |

Yes, Atelier Iris does have a unique battle system. I think that was the main reason I liked it so much, and the story was pretty good too. I like the characters a lot.
--
NIS has a new game?! I WANT! Do you have link or anything to a trailer that I can watch? And do you happen to know when/if it will be brought to NA?
And do you also have the link to the FFT new tailer? I would like to check it out too.
That was/is totaly my most favorite game of all time. I can't wait for the new one!
BUT,
I too will have to purchase a PSP.
Dadgumit.
But I do have a DS, that way if there is a FFTA sequal, I can get that!
Woot!
*drool* new games..

Man Fayore, you sound almost pissed by the news of an FFTA sequel. :l FFTA came before FFA in the timeline, ect. Though the only connection to eachother in the current versions of the games are fleeting references and that's it.
+FFTA is more fun 8B _________________ |

Really? I thought it was a pretty neutral comment, myself. 8l Though one might say that while FFT had an excellent ending, there could have been a little more closure to it (thus the wanting of a sequel or novel or manga or SOMETHING and not getting one makes me a bitter old hag). Though whatever SE writes at this point will likely fail, miserably.
+no
anime_slacker:
FFT trailer can be found at http://www.square-enix.co.jp/fft/ - the site's in Japanese, but the menues are mostly in English, so you shouldn't have too hard of a time finding it.
As for Soul Cradle, their site's at http://soul-cradle.jp/index.html and most of the menu's is in English as well. I didn't really spend too much time there, though, since my computer hates flash. :\ Since the game's out in a few weeks, they'll probably have at least one trailer on there.
Also, I finished Disgaea yeasterday. Got the good ending. 8D; Though it was completely and utterly predictable, including the twist with Mid-Boss. I kinda wanna run through it again and try to get Marjoly (Rhapsody <333) or some of the special endings but the idea of needing to train up to the X000th level kinda turns me off. :\
Maybe I'll finish Atelier Iris 2 or start Disgaea 2.. o3o |

Yes it is.
FFT had story, albeit one hard to understand for younger people- but what FFTA lacked in the complex story department made up for it more than ten fold in gameplay. With all the races, skills, equipment, jobs and quests..It's a game that's hard to get tired of and is great several times over.
FFT HAD A STORY
FFTA DIDN'T
FFT HAD OKAY GAMEPLAY
FFTA HAD AWESOME GAMEPLAY
The end.
Okay, slightly back on topic: I absolutely fucking love Phantom Brave. The Time Limit for your units on the battles just adds another exciting element to your strategy.

That game looks freaking amazing.

When is it supose to come out?
Oh.
And I couldn't watch the FFT one.
Guess I'll just have to wait to see it when it comes out.

lol, Soul Cradle? In a couple weeks for sure. Exact date? Jan 25th (a week after Dragon Shadow Spell, omggggg). The NA release, well, I have absolutely no clue (though NIS usually do their own games so the likelyhood it'll be released in English around summer/fall is probably pretty high).
As for FFT, someone took the video off the site and put it on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB5q72vO3AY
No announced date, but it's looking quite good. <3 Here's hoping it gets released before the end of August, lol.
If you're interested in an NIS game that's getting released in English, go for Ar tonelico. Ar tonelico's getting released on Feb 8th, and it's a musical RPG (like Rhapsody, though the plot seems to be more involved). Really popular in Japan, it's even got its own OVA (though it, like most OVAs based off video games, sucked pretty hard, I hear). Comes with a hardcover artbook, too (like other NIS preordered games - though, if I remember correctly, Phantom Kingdom's was a softcover...)~ 8D; |
