We all have SOME form of artistic talents but we all have special fields we are best at but always bested at, no matter who you are.
So, I want to you what is YOUR specialty. As in how, what, and what you enjoy to draw the most.
As for me, I use pure pencils and suck at Realism, so I have to stick with the Reploidish and One Piece way, as I enjoy to watch the 2 and comes freely and natural to me ^^ |

I have no patience for "life drawing", i.e. drawing from real life. It reminds me of highschool art classes, and those assignments were the uber boredom.
My forte is therefore along the lines of what doesn't exist in real life. Fantasy, anthropomorphics, some fanart, and so on. All kinds of things. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

Though Im good with anime, I really dont enjoy drawing it. I like to draw on a more realistic side. A little cartoony but still not anime. _________________

I had a crappy art teacher as well, so I was discouraged from taking art classes in high school. Fortunately, that wasn't the only teacher who knew about art, so I got some advice from the other teacher. She just doesn't teach art.
However, I get more practice out of drawing people, and have less patience with more mechanical or inanimate things, although I suppose those aren't necessarily difficult; I just lack practice there. I wouldn't really consider my stuff anime, but it's not really real life drawings either. I guess it is kind of realism, but I still have lots to learn. |

Holly crap... I wrote a novel... So I deleted it. Then I left this... (I went off on a tangent about my experience with art teachers and teaching styles, and then realized you would've fallen asleep before you got to the end of it. LOL)
I can appreciate all styles... But I do prefer sci-fi and fantasy. My favourite subjects since I was a child: nature, or things that look like they COULD be nature... I like winged things: giant birds, gryphons, winged lions, pegasi and things that aren't quite so easily identified. I have a special affection for dragons - all aspects and personalities... I like things that hop and things that look rodent-like, and things that are canine and feline... And some with characteristics of all... I think that is why I really liked Star Wars: my character seemed to run into all manner of other creatures, both sentient and non-sentient. I also like to draw magical creatures, and elves, unicorns and the like...
When I was around 10 years old, I drew a 300 page comic book about mice crash landing on Earth, and our primitive earth-mice had to look after them. They organized a protest against humans for hunting and forestry and animal husbandry. _________________ I believe in the Force... I use a blaster... |

I specialize in original characters, fantasy-styled stuff, and I'm getting into drawing J-rock fanart a little more. As for art style, I think I lost my ability to draw mainstream anime and I'm sorta getting the hang of realism. You could say I'm teetering on the rope that's streched over both those styles.
I'd like to get into more realism but I can't seem to apply it to my anime-styled characters all too well. :/
As for mediums, I think I do best with colored pencils and Photoshop CS with a tablet. Other than that everything is just bleh when applied to my drawings. _________________ I R GRAMMAR NAZI.

I'm probably best at realism. Anime is an okay field for me; I'm not that great, and my anime usually takes a realistic swerve. Cartoons are fun.
Art class........ teacher hated kids who drew anime for projects. He always "corrected" me on facial features, and yelled alot.
My art teacher is nice and fun (we watch movies almost every day or every Friday). She doesn't like anime in the art class, but she justifies it by saying that certain styles have their own spheres. Just like we can't draw cartoons for projects. Art class is there for us to learn realism first (or experiment with media) and then we may branch out into our own styles. _________________ Left for FAC, Right for DA |

That right there is one of my primary complaints about standardized art classes. It has a tendancy to create confidence issues. it's not untill you get to the specialized art schools that this not a problem.
Back when I was taking art class I failed every year simply because I could not do the realisim assignments to satifaction. That took it's toll, I had a deicent teacher who aknowledged that I was able to produse an image, but what I could do was not part of the cryteria and the cryteria was somthing I can't do. Standardized classes should be broadened to include the basics of as many art forms as possible ranging from Anime and cartoon to realisim and whatever else.
students should not have to fail art classes because they have no grasp of one type of imagery unless they are attending classes spefically for it (of they really can't grasp art peroid...) art class should not only teach basics but help find strong points, not suppress that witch is different. If you shoot them in the foot they're not going to run. _________________ RPG-n. I draw in the serious-anime style (please note the smaller eyes if you can't tell), I use original characters, and I'm heading towards a more realistic anime. I sometimes draw semi-cartoony realism, I do both anime and cartoony animals, semi-realistic creatures like giffons, beasts, dragons anything that is a humanoid-creature-fantasy animal of any variation I can do as long as it's not fully realistic. I specialize in erotica/sexual art *gasp!* as my main focus, and I'm just getting into the scifi realm. I love it, I'm just trying to get it in my head.
I'm working on scenery right now just to perfect my overall ability. You can't complete a picture scene without a background, right? The only thing is I'm having trouble with indoor scifi. For some reason my imagination likes to stop with modern homes. I'm trying for scifi, you know with those really long towers and archways and planets in the sky, and...stuff - I just get stuck with the mundane, like a chair or a table.
I won't do still life or grids, real or cartoon animals, or god forbid I ever start copying and tracing. I used to trace my own work, but I stopped doing that a few months ago once I got the swing of drawing and learning every day (which if you do, you'll find your overall talent will improve 10 fold). That usually only happens when I don't feel I can re-draw the same thing again if I screw up. I'm way passed that now. Now I can erase it if it's bad, and just whip it out in a second flat.
I just hate when people ask me to draw them a picture of them and their dog, or do a painting of a snowman on somebody's window. Ooh, so annoying. That right there is an artistic failure on my part. I would crash and burn and mess up DEVOTEDLY so - because I'm just not interested if it's not in my niche. Just because I'm an artist doesn't mean I'm a legendary art goddess who can do the impossible (you know the people that gasp when they see you drawing, and then they go on about how they can't draw a stick figure and we're just the greatest art masters ever to walk the earth?). I can't draw a dog if it was sitting right in front of me. I have no interest in it.
It's like what battou said. |

A lot of people seem to be having trouble in here admitting that they like to draw anime-styled characters, and that that's what they're good at. Always trying to back it up with some comment about liking or wanting to do realism, as if it's some saving point for their art. I drew bad anime art. Wanted to do realism. Lacked the attention span to do realism, but i learned some stuff. Now I only draw mediocre anime art.

Nobody has trouble admitting they like anime. Realism just means the anime characters are more physically believable while retaining the style. Speaking for myself, when I say I'm headed towards a more realistic anime, I'm talking about more natural features in the anime characters like more naturalistic eyes, features, and emotion -- I will never betray the anime style, there's not a chance on earth I'll ever do that. Anime's perfect for me. I love it too much to let it go (I'm assuming that's what you mean when people don't admit how much they like it ) There's always going to be an edge in the style that I'm going to keep that lets people know it's still anime-styled. Realism is probably a favorite among many people who like anime, and it's likely people want to combine it with anime to enhance their characters. |

My art teacher's pretty cool. We really don't have that many structured asignments though, mostly she tells us to draw whatever we want. I'll draw in her class and she'll rant and rave about how good my drawings are, then I'll post them on Deviant Art and hear about how badly they suck (that's DA for ya.) As for my specialty, I used to like anime, but now I'm into realism or cartoon realism. Anime is just too cute for me. |

I draw cartoons.
Don't care for realism, don't care for anime, just draw big ol' North American cartoons. _________________
