I was thinking that maybe we could have right-click protection on art so no one steals it.

Mm...not so much.

Right-click protection is annoying at best, though I suppose it'll deter people who don't care enough to get around or don't know how to use the printscreen button. It's also irritating to people who like to do things like open links in new windows/tabs.

considering you can press Print Screen and do the same thing, or "file>save as web page", right-click protection doesn't really work.

Also, I like being able to save art on my HD, especially for inspiration or reference, which is a large part of the reason why we look at other people's art. Sometimes I want to load it up on PSP, zoom on it and see the details and colors used.

In other words, right-click protection will not prevent theft, but will annoy the heck out of people who aren't thieves.

I've suggested something like this before and it was turned down for the same reason, it can't distinguish between art thievery and legitimate downloading. Bottom line is that if you want to protect your images, you are the one who needs to label or watermark them.

That doesn't work either, please don't butcher pictures with watermarks.
Confused Really irritating to look at.

Yeah, a truly determined thief (e.g. Stacey) will work around anything. Still, deterring casual theft is better than nothing.

The kind of watermark it takes to deter anyone, due to how easy it is to crop/clone a picture, is one right over the subject of the picture. And at that point you're just ruining your art.

I've seen those watermarks. A nonitrusive watermark may be easily removed, but even if it only catches the dumb thieves....

Non-intrusive watermarks/urls/sigs/etc may not prevent serious art thieves, but it will help with the people downloading for personal use, forgetting where it came from, and posting it to show off (not to claim ownership of).
