Do you hate it or love it?

Personaly, I don't mind it. It's a change from other Final Fantasy's. So in other words, I like both- the old fighting style and 12's new fighting style.

What do you think?

Love it. The fact that you don't have the screen breaking into a million pieces every 20 steps just to load some monsters is in itself a relief, and if you have to flee a battle, you have to actually FLEE the battle.

But one of the things I came to love absolutely the most about it is Regen. You know how in previous FF's the Regen spell would always wear off after every battle? But FF12's battle system is "always on", so when you cast Regen it continues to restore the character's HP even when there are no monsters around to fight. And it lasts a good 2-3 minutes at a time. Saved me a fortune in Cure spells....

I like it, except that whenever my party leader gets hit, the action freezes and it makes me pick the leader or goes to the status screen. I don't know if it's my settings or what. That's the only thing I find annoying.

You mean if your party leader is KO'ed? If the monsters start teaming up on your party leader, I find the easiest thing to do is swap out to another character and continue the fight from there.

Not even KO'd, just when the character is hit.

The only things that interrupt the flow of battle are:

- Party leader KO'ed (forced to select a new leader)
- Entire active team KO'ed (forced to switch party members)
- Hitting up/down on the control pad (selects new leader)
- Pressing the X button (displays action menu)

Berserk/Confuse/Stop/Sleep status on your party leader doesn't interrupt the flow of battle, it just blocks you from issuing orders to them.

There is one slight flaw to the battle system, whenever a high-level spell (Flare, Holy, etc.) is used, all subsequent spells/Technicks/Items (you and monsters alike) must wait until the spell has completed, but characters (and monsters) performing physical attacks will still be able to get their turns in. The faster you set the battle speed, the more this occurs, since the visual effect of a spell isn't affected by the battle speed setting.

Sometimes you can use this to your advantage (say, a monster is preparing a magic, you are casting Holy so the monster must wait, but a Berserked character can still get extra turns in) but it's usually more of a hindrance -- particularly if you're trying to Cure party members low on HP.

Which reminds me of another good thing to the battle system: When you Berserk a character, not only does this increase their attack power by 50% but it also doubles the rate at which their turns come up (even without Haste), so they actually do 3x as much damage as they would normally. It's a good trade-off for not being able to control them for awhile, and the game tells you that you can remove Berserk status at any time by casting Dispel. (You can also remove Slow/Stop by casting Dispel)

I found myself casting Berserk on Basch and/or Ashe (my heavy hitters) quite frequently.

Heh, it's nice because I'm so used to the screen breaking into million's of pieces, but it never does.

The regen is nice. I love it in this game.

I really like it. It has both factors where you can either sit back and let the characters take over the battle, or you can choose every command. The ability for every character to develop how you want (which meant that I got the spells for every character) is nice too.

FF12, it's taken about 80 hours of my life so far, and I'm not even done yet. Rolling Eyes

I finished the game in about 100 hours. Now I'm hunting up sidequests. Rare monsters, marks, etc.

That optional battle with Gilgamesh was awesome. The only "mark" so far to have an actual boss HP meter, his own cutscenes, his own battle music (and a remix of his FF5 battle music, no less!), plus you'll recognize almost every one of the weapons he pulls out to use in battle. That was a fight for the ages, no doubt.

Played almost every game in the series, beating most of them (have yet to finish 2, 3, 4, 7 or 8).

I freaking love the battle system. I actually like the monster encounters in this game. In past FFs if you got in random battles you swore uncontrolabbly. Not I actually run around attacking things. I really wish there was a multiplayer option. You and two friends taking on the world of Ivalice. But I guess it wouldn't be Final Fantasy unless you played it alone.

Well actually I remember in FF9 that you could change it to 2 playsers, just couldent walk around as player 2. so FF was a 2 player game for a short time.

Two-player capability in old Final Fantasy games was hardly anything more than mapping certain party members to the second controller.

You go to the options and can assign characters to be controlled by the second controller. That's it really.

i like the new style of fighting.
I like how the game doesnt freeze mid screen smash up for monsters!
my copy of FFX2 does that all the time!
ANyway, I like how gambits can be set so no one hardly ever dies so long as someone jumps in with a cure spell.
Just wait till you get curaja!
I think the new style of fighting is much better ^^
