Do you think it's necessarily a stereotype that most if not all manga has a Japanese setting? How many of you just don't enjoy manga as much if it's set in America? I'm curious of what you think of this, so here's my poll: Do you prefer Japanese settings, American settings, or you don't mind either way?

Japanese setting, like as in Fruits Basket and such. Makes it seem a bit more... traditional? But I like futuristic settings, too.

^Agreed. I couldn't get into FullMetal Alchemist for the longest time because it has a prominently European setting. After awhile I got over it though.

Well, considering that most manga artists are Japanese, it makes sense to set the story in a place where the artist is familiar with. I hate it when Japanese people try to make manga set in America or Americans try to do manga set in Japan and it's so obviously factually wrong.

Example: In Hanakimi it's apparently normal for the Japanese American girl living in Japan to not use a shower curtain because... Americans don't use shower curtains. What?!

I don't really have a preference as to where or when a manga takes place. As long as it's believable, it's fine with me.

Lol. Good point...

I'm making my own manga set it Japan. Embarassed I was a little uneasy about it, but I'm using a lot of references and research to make sure my facts are straight.

I don't really care where they take place. Just as long as it's interesting. If you base your interest solely on whether or not it's set in japan, you're just being ridiculous.

I'm really good at telling wonky bits in cultural references. I've laughed at so many Japanese anime poorly trying to be American-set, it's become a whole new line of entertainment for me. For instance, cars going in the left lane, every single American person being tall bloond white or brooding black man, etc. etc.

I like magical realism setting the best, the ones that is not set in one real place, but brings reference to a lot of places. I think settings in things like Naruto and Mushishi was well done. chockful of Japanese reference, but it doesn't actually say it's Japan.

^Agreed. Settings in Naruto are real nice. Real varied aswell.

I prefer seeing historic Japan settings with a bit of a 21st century edge like in Samurai Champloo. It's like Japanese steampunk. =D

I'm not really fussed, as long as the storyline and characters suit the setting.

It doesn't matter really. If I had to choose I would say in New York city in the USA. I'm only saying this because most anime characters look American anyway.
When I watched Sailor Moon, I thought she was white american, then later I learned about Japanese anime.

Well i would say if you really were american and wanted a japanese setting, i'd say do what the naruto creator did. make your own time setting with some american and some japanese.

What was distinctly "American" about Naruto?
